Even though depends on specific use cases, as each Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution has distinct strengths.

Here's a brief of their core characteristics, bear in mind, my focus was toward the one that aligns best with general scalability, developer adoption, and long-term potential:


Arbitrum:
Optimistic Rollup:

Strengths: Leads in total value locked (TVL) with $5.24 billion and 55% market share as of August 2023, boasting 700 TPS and a robust ecosystem with over 500 DeFi protocols. Its multi-round fraud-proof system enhances security, and full EVM compatibility makes it developer-friendly, supporting languages like Rust and C++ alongside Solidity.

Weaknesses: Longer withdrawal times (up to 7 days) due to the challenge period, and centralized sequencers pose a minor trust risk.

Best for: Developers and projects prioritizing a mature ecosystem, high TVL, and broad dApp support.

Optimism:
Type: Optimistic Rollup

Strengths: Offers 200 TPS, simpler single-round fraud proofs for faster finality, and a strong community focus on public goods. Its OP Stack powers networks like Base, enhancing interoperability. Optimism’s EVM equivalence ensures seamless dApp migration, and its open-source MIT-licensed code fosters developer adoption. TVL stands at $2.41 billion with a 25% market share.

Weaknesses: Lower throughput than Arbitrum and zkSync, and its fraud-proof system is less cost-efficient than Arbitrum’s multi-round approach.

Best for: Projects valuing simplicity, Ethereum alignment, and community-driven governance.

zkSync:
Type: Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Rollup

Strengths: Excels in transaction speed (up to 2,000 TPS, with claims of 100,000 TPS potential) and instant finality due to ZK proofs. Features like gasless meta-transactions and atomic swaps enhance user experience. Its EVM compatibility (not full equivalence) supports most Ethereum dApps, and it leads in gas consumption (32% market share). Launched in March 2023, it’s rapidly growing with $1 billion in TVL.

Weaknesses: ZK tech is more complex, requiring specialized developer tools, and it’s less EVM-equivalent, which may slow dApp migration. Currently, transactions are transparent, though privacy features are planned.

Best for: High-throughput, privacy-focused applications like gaming or payments.


Why I chose zkSync: for its long-term potential. According to researches, among the trio: ARB, OP, and ZK, ZK Rollups offer superior scalability and faster finality, critical for mass adoption, and zkSync’s user-centric features like gasless transactions make it appealing for mainstream use. While Arbitrum currently dominates in TVL and ecosystem maturity, zkSync’s rapid growth and technological edge (e.g., recursive ZK-SNARKs) position it as a future leader, especially as ZK tech matures and developer tools improve.
