The Evolution Of Concorde's Designs Over The Times (Photo) by Racoon(op): 1:16pm On Jun 25, 2025
A stunning look at the evolution of Concorde liveries from its 1969 maiden flight to iconic operators like British Airways, Singapore Airlines, and even a bold Pepsi campaign!

This legendary supersonic jet not only broke speed records but also turned heads with its ever-changing style. A true symbol of innovation and elegance in aviation history.
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BAX2eyH7H/

The Concorde was a British-French supersonic passenger airliner that operated from 1976 to 2003. It was known for its speed, flying at twice the speed of sound, and its luxurious transatlantic service. However, high operating costs, a tragic accident, and environmental concerns led to its retirement.

Key Features and History:
-1). Supersonic Speed:

Concorde could fly at Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound), significantly reducing transatlantic travel time.
-2). Joint Development:
It was jointly developed and manufactured by British Aircraft Corporation and Aérospatiale, with Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 engines.

-3). Unique Design:
The aircraft had a distinctive delta wing and a droop nose to aid visibility during takeoff and landing.
-4). Luxury Travel:
Concorde offered a premium travel experience with high-end amenities and a faster journey.

-5). Retirement:
Both British Airways and Air France retired their Concorde fleets in 2003 due to various factors.

Reasons for Retirement:
-1). High Operating Costs:
Concorde consumed a large amount of fuel, making flights expensive.
-2). 2000 Accident: The 2000 Paris crash, though not a design flaw, negatively impacted public perception and demand.
-3). Environmental Concerns: Noise and sonic boom concerns limited its routes and operations.
-4). Low Passenger Numbers: Demand for supersonic travel was not sufficient to offset the high operating costs.

Legacy:
Engineering Marvel:
Concorde remains an iconic symbol of engineering and design.
Supersonic Dreams: It represents a time when supersonic passenger travel was a reality, though ultimately not sustainable.

The British Airways Landor livery seems to be the best, then followed by the Air France own. So sad, Concorde time in the technology advancement of aviation was cut short to early.

Otherwise, the world would have been regaled with many fascinating liveries if all the major airlines across the world were able to operate it.

You people should build systems to stop plane crashes and the pain of losing to air disasters. If humanity had channelled all energy used in destructive attainments into positive growth, life would be far more easier on earth. If plane brainbox is not affected by disaster, why wont we build a whole plane of brainbox immune to mishaps?

I hear that the next supersonic airplane will be an electric one.

I will like to fly in one and experience how it feels to fly back in time cheesy

No, probably not.

Concorde cost a lot of money to run. Far more expensive than the average Airbus or Boeing flight.

I so much fear flying... almost had a heart attack the last time. In my head, any small turbulence seemed it would crash..

Flew this 1998 British airways. Was too naive to know the difference
Re: The Evolution Of Concorde's Designs Over The Times (Photo) by Kobicove(m): 3:31pm On Jun 25, 2025
It was pressure from the press that made them discontinue operations of the Concorde after just 1 crash.

The crash was not even due to a technical problem with the plane but due to a metal strip on the runway which ruptured its fuel tank angry

Yes it did cost a lot of money to run but it was among the best maintained class of commercial aircraft

There are different ongoing projects to build a replacement but developing a new supersonic aircraft from scratch is highly capital intensive and carries a very high burden of financial risks

The next generation of supersonic commercials flights is called the "BOOM OVERTURE" currently being developed in USA,they are not electric but will run on sustainable fuel.

A Concorde flight from Lagos to New York would likely take around 4 to 5 hours, though the exact time would depend on wind conditions and other factors.

With the sonic boom and safety records (many near misses as well as the incident shared by the OP), it wouldn't survive.

Major Accident
1. Air France Flight 4590 – The Only Fatal Crash
Date: July 25, 2000

Location: Gonesse, France (shortly after takeoff from Charles de Gaulle Airport)

Operator: Air France

Fatalities: 113 (100 passengers, 9 crew, 4 people on the ground)

What Happened:

A metal strip from a Continental Airlines DC-10 that took off before the Concorde fell onto the runway.

The strip punctured a Concorde tire, sending debris into the fuel tank.

A fire started in the wing; the plane lost thrust in one engine and failed to gain altitude.

It crashed into a hotel.

✅ This crash grounded the fleet for over a year and led to major safety overhauls.

⚠️ Notable Incidents and Near Misses

2. 1979: Engine Failure During Takeoff – Dulles Airport, Washington D.C.
What Happened: One engine failed on takeoff. The flight crew aborted the takeoff safely.

Outcome: No injuries, but the incident led to questions about Concorde's safety margins with engine failure.

3. 1982: In-Flight Engine Shutdown
Location: En route to Washington D.C.

What Happened: An engine was shut down mid-flight due to a mechanical issue.

Outcome: Concorde could fly safely on 3 engines, so the flight landed without incident.

4. 1989: Tyre Blowout During Takeoff – JFK Airport
What Happened: A tire burst on takeoff roll, damaging a hydraulic line.

Outcome: Safe takeoff and landing. Similar to the type of event that later caused the 2000 crash.

5. 2003: Near Mid-Air Collision
Location: Over the Irish Sea

What Happened: A Concorde on a farewell flight came dangerously close to another aircraft due to air traffic control miscommunication.

Outcome: Resolved quickly, but noted as a serious airspace coordination error.

Yes and no. The original Concorde, that is, the one that was designed by Britain and France, will not be coming back, sadly. But guess what? There is some good news! Supersonic jet lovers can look forward to flying in the American imitation very soon. Yes, the Americans effectively killed Concorde as a business model only to turn around and copy the exact same jet, no innovations whatsoever.

You know, if someone didn't read your post closely enough they might easily overlook the fact that the concord had only 9 incidents in more than 30 years, only one of them ending in fatality. If you performed the same analysis on even the best performing aircraft in the market will you get even less than 10 incidents in 30 years? Just asking for the sake of fairness.
