What does the law in Nigeria say about name change of a woman that just lost her husband.
Will she continue to bear his name or change to another name and at what point should she change her name.

I have not thought about that. I think, the name should be changed since death and divorce are the official ending to marriage.
But marriage still transcends death because of love that is involved. Whoever wills, could do that if the society will take it lightly with such act.

I think the OP is looking away from the law or possibly amend the law

Even while he is alive, she can choose not to bear his name. Core Northern women bear their fathers' names even after marriage.

If she had children with her late husband, she can decide not to change her name.
If she decides to remarry...
In any case, it is up to her to decide whether to drop or keep the name.

Ok that means that it is not compulsory so why do ladies now change their names immediately they get married.

They continue to use their Father's name or after their husband's. Like Fareeda Yusuf(husband's surname) bin Mohammed (father's name/surname) the bin there means daughter of.
