The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has expressed relief over the possible defection of its former presidential candidate and ex-Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing his exit as a betrayal and a welcome development. In a strongly worded statement made on Sunday in Lagos, the party’s National Secretary, Mr. Oginni Olaposi, accused Kwankwaso of hijacking party structures, causing internal crises, and dragging the party through years of avoidable legal battles.

Kwankwaso “Tried to Hijack NNPP”

“Kwankwaso did not only try to hijack the NNPP but also made the party go through avoidable litigations,” Olaposi said.
“He even went ahead to replace the party’s official logo with his personal Kwankwasiya Movement symbol.”

Olaposi confirmed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has now restored the party’s original logo, which had been a source of controversy and division since 2022.

Ganduje Resignation Sparks Defection Speculations

The NNPP’s comments come amid rumours of Kwankwaso negotiating a return to the APC, shortly after Abdullahi Ganduje resigned as APC National Chairman. While Ganduje cited health concerns, political watchers believe the move may be connected to a broader strategy to pave the way for Kwankwaso’s return.

“We have reasons to doubt the ongoing propaganda that Ganduje left APC to enable an alleged negotiated arrangement with Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 presidential election,” Olaposi noted.

“Let APC Have Him” – NNPP Fires Final Shot

According to Olaposi, many in the NNPP see Kwankwaso’s exit as a necessary purge, given his alleged betrayal of the party’s founding principles and its original founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam.

“Kwankwaso betrayed our trust. He tried to hijack the party that offered him a free presidential ticket. Let APC have him. NNPP will be better off.”

He added that Kwankwaso’s continued insistence on being a party member, despite being expelled for anti-party activities, is part of the lingering crisis the NNPP has worked hard to resolve.

2027 Political Realignments Begin

With Kwankwaso rumored to be eyeing a strategic return to the ruling APC, and Ganduje’s resignation adding fuel to the fire, Nigeria’s 2027 political chessboard is already taking shape. The NNPP appears focused on reclaiming its independence, while the APC may be welcoming new players to solidify its base.
