Five Nigerian Nationals Arrested For Illegal Stay In Tirupur India by iamfraud(op): 8:30pm On Jun 28, 2025
The Mangalam police on Saturday arrested five Nigerian nationals for illegal stay in India. The arrested foreign nationals were staying in rental houses in Tirupur city.

Police said the five would be lodged in the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai on Sunday.

A police officer identified the arrested five as Vincent, 35, Chikezie Innocent, 43, Chinweubalinus, 52, Andrew Ugochukwu, 25, and Anthony, 41.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that they had been staying in Tirupur city since 2021, buying banian clothes and exporting them to their home country.

The officer said the five were nabbed based on a specific tip that they were staying at Sulthanpet Neelipirivu on Mangalam Road without any valid documents.
"They did not have passports and valid visas to stay in the country."

While Bangladeshi nationals illegally staying in Tirupur and working in garment units is common, Nigerian nationals often visit Tirupur to buy apparel and export the same to their hometowns, the officer said. He said some Nigerian nationals were staying at Rayapuram in Tirupur city with proper documents.

"We arrested the five after they confessed that they were staying in the country without any valid documents.

They were later produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded them in judicial custody. They will now be taken to the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai," the officer said.

Government should stop these people from traveling to India for legitimate and illegal until somethings are addressed. Some of these that started as legal always end up as illegal. Just stop them totally! Enough of dragging Nigeria name in the mud

Some Indians are busy in the streets of Indian job hunting at the newspaper stands and targeting opportunities in Nigeria. While their wages in India are very poor, they look out for Nigeria where they can earn better salaries and remit to their country. A lot of the same Indians and Chinese reside in Nigeria illegitimately and unmolested by authorities. Many of them too to known to embezzle company funds and yet are not arrested.

Most Nigerians in India are not involved in any crime. It is only a minority who get involved. Indian government unfortunately makes renewal of visas very difficult in their country, otherwise nationals of other countries will not run into visa problems of overstay with the immigration. Knowing how expensive tickets and visa processes are, some choose to wait to do the shipments over periods of time, leading to overstay.

The problem must be addressed by the Indian government or parliament. It is absolute selfishness. While Indians are citizens of several other nationals, they hardly permit people of other nations be ine their citizens.

The last lines of your reply, you said two things: faster renewal of visas; easier to get Indian citizenship. Which one do you want? Citizenship or visa renewals? Thanks in advance.

Look, visa renewal, citizenship, whatever, they all should be opportunities granted to people of other nations to stay legitimately in their country. While others provide such opportunities for Indians, they cannot continue to make themselves a hamit nation. They have had an American Vice President and a British Prime minister. Such opportunities should be permitted to people of other nations.

If they can reside in other countries, renewing their visas easily and getting citizenships, while should they shut out others from their country?

No idea what you are talking about. Nobody stopped you from applying for an Indian citizenship. 21,000 foreigners got Indian citizenship through naturalization in the previous decade.

The wife of a former Indian PM and the current leader of the most storied and largest Indian political party is an Italian- born, 100% Italian blooded woman by the name of Sonia Gandhi. Google her. She is THE biggest leader in Indian left wing and held power almost equal to the prime minister for 10 years before Modi. Not even people who live under a proverbial rock can claim not to know about her. Her husband, mother in law, grandfather in law were ALL PRIME MINISTERS OF INDIA. She is listed as one of the most powerful women in the world.

Most of your grievances seem imagined. Try not to form opinions before doing something as basic as a Google search.

So you do not know that on this forum, some of the people who you meet, have first hand experience about the issues talked about? You are looking at google and I am talking with experience as one who has visited and spent time in that country. You can continue with google if you choose, or you can learn from people who tell you what’s going on with the Indian immigration rules.

If 21,000 people have become citizens in one decade, does that not show you how poor rigid the process is? We are talking of millions of citizens from the rest of the world and not just Nigerians. India has a population of over 1.3 billion people and yet such poor amount of people have become citizens. Nigeria has 260 million people and with our rules, foreigners are well protected.

Do you want to talk of USA and Europe, where Indians scramble to get citizenships? You may contact the Nigerian high commission in India for verification and not google. That’s even more straight forward.

Foreigners may become Indian citizens by naturalisation after residing in the country for at least 12 years and renouncing any previous nationalities. This is the rule, yet it is extremely hard. With that rule, should people who intend to become citizens not have some documents to protect them, while they wait for the process to conclude?

Members of certain religious minority communities from neighbouring countries qualify for a reduced residence requirement of six years, yet even their Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan neighbors find it near impossible to achieve.

I am not aggrieved and there is no imagination here. I do not require and I never needed Indian nationality.
I am telling you the reality, as experienced first hand. You may seek for someone else who either has visited or spent time in India to tell you. Again, I have interacted with Indians right from when I was a little boy, right in Nigeria, India and other countries where I have visited. I know them as I have done business with them.

Okay, so now that I called out your lie that Indians don't let foreigners get Indian citizenship or the lie that foreigners can't become powerful politicians in India, now you want to shift goalposts and claim that India's citizenship laws are too tough, huh? Alright. Let's get something straight here:

India does not need to comply with your arbitrary standards on citizenship and how hard or easy, in your subjective opinion, the process of naturalization needs to be. This is India's sovereign decision. We Indians have been ruled by foreigners for one entire millennium. We have been fighting a war to preserve our civilization. We will not allow another pseudo colonization of our lands. No more cultural subversion will be tolerated. The Republic of India did not tell you how your nation's immigration and naturalization policies should be. So stop trying to tell us how we should run our country. The numbers of insurgencies we face alone are enough to justify our hard naturalization policies. First try to live here, as a citizen, and then you'll realize.

West is a very different civilization and set of nations. They create policies that help the West. If they feel that Indians going there in large numbers is bad for them, they are free to enact laws against it. They do not do so because they benefit from it (or think that they do).

Comparing West and India is comparing apples and oranges. Its as asnine as comparing the repo rate or the cash reserve ratio between a developing and a developed country. They have a below replacement TFR. They are developed nations. Ofcourse they rely on immigration to shore up their numbers while also leveraging their better living standards to get the cream of another nation's population to migrate to them. This is a part of their strategy. In what world does such a strategy make sense in the Indian context?

Now coming to Nigeria, I don't know what your policies are. And if you feel they aren't fair, get your government to change them. Stop trying to tell us Indians how to run our own nation. Do what you think is right in your own nation. Think the Indians, Chinese, Lebanese have it to easy? Ask your government to make it harder. Do an Idi Amin. But don't pass false comments about India. You don't have the amount of knowledge needed to judge why India has set it's immigration process at a certain level of ease or difficulty. We have historical, civilizational, security and economic concerns for why we made our citizenship laws the way they are. And we won't blindly ape the West and their policies. We have something called self respect. This is the will of the people of India. That foreigners are free to come visit. But don't overstay your welcome. This is our land. And if you choose to be one of us, prove that you deserve it. Very few manage to prove that, and so the number is 21,000, not 21 Million.

Can you please show me the lie in all that I said Mr. Indian man? Don’t overstay your welcome, yet you have Indians who have long overstayed their welcome in African countries and still remain there. Such hypocrisy!

Is the reality on the streets in India the same as your google based submission? Or as an Indian national you rely also on google to inform you about happenings on the streets of the country? Do Africans especially have any regard in the eyes of Indian authorities right there in India?

Oga, stop deceiving yourself. You are certainly a Nigerian, who is poorly informed of real events on the streets of India. Your idea of immigration is very well lacking in all real proofs. At best you can only be an Indian who left his “civilization” in search of better living in Nigeria.

Indians fight a war to preserve their civilization and yet venture away from their own country, with their so called civilization to other countries. If it was so good out there in the country, why venture away in such magnitude? Indians can keep their civilization to themselves and let others stay peacefully in their nations.

While Indians are not Africans, you find Indians everywhere in Africa, securing African citizenships with ease. Please tell us how many Africans have obtained Indian citizenships in the last decade, as referenced by you. Can you please tell us how many Nigerians, central, north and South Africans who have obtained Indian citizenship in the last decade? You can also google that.

Which African country was spared the “millenniums” of ruling by foreigners? All African countries suffered the effects of colonialism. Now it is the invasion of Indians and other nations.

We know the issue with Naxalism, which is not common to India only. We know about long standing issue with Pakistan. We know that the rise in Hindu nationalism has been an issue with the minority Muslims and Christians. We know about the issue in Manipur and ISIS.But these all pale in significance to what happens in West Africa, yet it is far easier to obtain citizenships in African countries for Indians.

Truthfully, I am not in the position to dictate to the Indian government about their immigration rules. However I am entitled to my opinion about certain worrisome aspects. Shutting the mouth in the face of such concerns becomes an issue of its own. If people shut their mouths, then leaders carry on as they wish.

If you googled the Indian immigration policies, how were you not able to also look up the Nigerian immigration or citizenship rules. For your information the rules are made flexible inspite of the duration, enabling foreigners take their time to regularize their documents after the long stay. No one is ever molested, except they are caught in criminal acts. Nowadays it is common for Indian FRRO to pick up Africans at random, detain and deport them, even if their are not found in any criminal act.
