Is 290 In Jamb Enough To Study Medicine? by whyteteeth(op): 4:47pm On May 10, 2025
My nephew scored 290 in Jamb. We are a little unsure if that score is enough for medicine and surgery. His first choice is University of Uyo. We are from Rivers State.

I was wondering if we could do a change of institution of just let him try his luck with it.

Each department have numbers of students they can admit each year, if the number of students that scored 290 aren't much, their is hope, he might be the one with the highest score that chose the school and the course but in a case where about 200 other students scored over 290 in the same course and institution, and that Dept can only admit 150 students, his chance is slim. River State and Uyo are both in the same catchment area.

Uniuyo? Why don't he consider UNN, which has one of the colleges of medicine with the highest graduating quota in Nigeria and also, if he merits the admission, he'll be admitted even without knowing anyone there (Speaking from personal experience) and many more benefits.
Coupled with the fact that River state also happens to be within it catchment areas.
That's a very good utme score, don't waste it. I didn't score up to that during my time but still got medsurg by God's grace tho' on merit list after putme.

We are even considering schools in the north if that will make him stand a chance because we don’t want him to waste this score.

Rivers State is not within the catchment of UNN

UNN is a First generation University, all F1 universities have the catchment of states that once belonged to the old region. By default, All SS/SE States except Delta that formerly belonged to MidWest région are UNN catchment states.

In 2025, high score in jamb shouldn’t really be a thing for medicine anymore.

The quota has been ridiculously increased by MDCN and medical schools springing up all over the country.

Just look for a medical school that he can easily fit in and you can afford instead of wasting his jamb score and year.

Anyone writing jamb multiple times for medicine probably because he or she is fixated on a particular uni in this time and age no go ever wise up.

Things are not the same as it was 10 - 15 years ago.

Yes, traditional medicine. No try that one you carry for mind at all.

But on a serious note, wahala dey this country educational sector. Couple of years ago, you can't score less than 320 and imagine getting admission for medicine and surgery

Stop giving false narrative to the OP.
290 in UNN for med and surg?
He'll secure admission easily in Uni Uyo with that score than UNN that the will likely give him a consolation course at the end of the day.

So that means I should stick with Uniuyo. How about RSU?

Bro I'm speaking from experience. If his Waec grades are okay He'll secure admission in uniuyo. I dont know if they are back in writing Putme.
If it's UNN, if he score high in his putme and have a good aggregate but not upto the cutoff mark for med, they will still him admission in a lesser course. But RSU na state uni. Them go like bribe too much. Stick to uniuyo. I know the uni very well.
