Even when rice sold for N800 per bag, people no still fit afford am.

Infact when it sold for N300, people still dey buy only congos. Nigeria problem is more of lesser wages which limit what amount of goods people can actually buy at a given time.
Re: See Market Survey For Food Prices In Nigeria In January 1989 by nairalanda1(m): 12:43pm On Jul 09, 2025
Times were not good back then, before people start.

We lament because of consumption and ruining mentality. If the prices are up, it means prospect of earning more is up also.

Can you imagine, For the records,1989 was under military rule. The Chief of staff of whom is now seen as a devil by one particular section of the country. Now tell me, was their government not better than theirs now both former and present? The former even did extremely very well but the present himself who his followers demonize the regime of 1989 is a complete disaster.

Make I close my mouth first .

Meanwhile say no to military rule

This is how you know someone was not born back then

Times were hard back then. People grumbled about high prices. SAP was sapping us. Our take home salary could not take us home.

Yes, tinubu is bad. But let us not pretend 1980's was eldorado. Especially from 1982.

I am sure that during this time, the people will be complaining that the price of items are too high.

The national minimum wage in 1989 was 125 naira - not enough to buy a bag of rice as at then... It was after series of negotiation between NLC and the babangida led government before the minimum wage was review to 250 naira. This also spiked the inflation rate.

I am not in any way trying to justify this useless government sha.

But just to point to you guys that Nigerians don enter one chance tey tey...

You need to first check what people earn in 1989 and then use that to deduce whether they can actually afford it well.

Minimum wage was N250 in 1989. If you sell rice for N600, that’s like > 2X their monthly salary for rice alone.

How people wan take afford the rice?

Back then times were hard. People were doing japa back then well well.

0-1-0 was how people ate food in those days, and I am not joking.

Times were hard. Do not be decieved by those low prices.

In 1981, my parents bought a cow for 90 Naira. They could not afford the cow by themselves, so they paired up with another copule to pool money to buy the thing. cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy

At that time. Most people get to eat rice only on birthday celebrations or on Christmas day. Rice was a delicacy. Not many could afford even rice except during celebration.

Read the article attacjed in the pictures...you go see how times were hard.

For Nigerians...the key word is survival

Times were hard. N1000 was a lot of money that back then most of us never saw. The highest denomination in 1989 was N20...there was no N50 or even N100 and above back then. N1 was offering.

Times were hard back then.

Buhari
Tilumbu
Are the human disasters that cripple the economy. 8 years of Buhari is nothing but a shadow of himself, Tinubu has already started where Buhari stopped. I agreed that there is inflation in the world but you see the one Nigeria is currently facing is caused by clueless leaders.

Read the article below attached.

Times were hard. The article attached to the survey is a lament.

Army rule? When people were crying and complaining then. You were not born then, that's why you think times were good.

Your salary would not be up to N1000 if you were alive then as an adult.

Indeed. Times were hard back then.

SAP was sapping people back then

What happens with this kind of thread is that most people think that guys were earning minimum wage of 75000 back then. No effing way. Salaries for most people won't have passed N2000-3000 at best. MInimum wage was N250 then, most would have been around N1000 or less self.
