Thank you for your contributions so far. I intend to apply for University of Waikato and I will like to know your BSc discipline ( course) that qualified you for a 120 points MSc IT. Lastly, have you gotten a visa decision? As I learnt S2 will resume in July. I patiently await your response🙏 CalabarSamurai: |

You’re welcome. The academic requirements for the University of Waikato are on their website, so it’s best you check there before applying, the good thing is that there are no application fees for NZ Schools - so you don’t lose money if your application is rejected. All the best in your application! devsam007: |

It’s a thread, we learn from people’s experience and that’s what keeps a thread going. Have a good day. CalabarSamurai: |

Hi Good day all hopefuls. After two PhD denied application, I switched to MSc and I was just given the offer. But I'm afraid I had to defer since their tuition was crazy, no scholarship and I had to pay and get my visa by 21 July since semester two starts here. I am hopeful |

Better to defer than to be denied. pongwa: |

pongwa:What was the reason for your PhD application denial? Did you contact your supervisor after the decision? |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by pongwa(m): 7:31pm On Jun 26, 2025 |
Peaceful123:for the first trial, I guess it was because my msc transcript wasn't ready as I was in grad school then. The decision o the second one actually came faster even though I don't believe that I was not qualified for a PhD. They said I didn't meet the requirements, no reason whatsoever. My supervisor was very patient with me through the whole process. I just decided to apply for a masters and got in. My challenge is there was no funding |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by pongwa(m): 7:32pm On Jun 26, 2025 |
KaptainAfrika:yes o approx. 55k NZD is no joke. That's over 50 million naira man |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by Peaceful123(m): 8:11pm On Jun 26, 2025 |
pongwa:Why did they say you are not qualified? So sad though. PhD will have made the whole thing easier |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by pongwa(m): 6:41am On Jun 27, 2025 |
Peaceful123:it's right there 'no details, just that I didn't meet the requirements' I had 4.35/5 gpa MSc 3.82/5 bsc GPA A publication |

This looks good enough, was there are requirement that the MSc have a sizeable research component? pongwa: |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by Peaceful123(m): 8:36am On Jun 27, 2025 |
pongwa:You should have asked in details. Maybe it is something you could explain or provide clarification for. Your grade look good. Except if you don’t have adequate research component in it. Better still, you can ask for details. |

If you apply to Auckland University of Technology, just give them like two months to answer you, in-between that time, they will just be bombarding you with advertisements in your email, each time you would be thinking that it is an important update. ![]() University of Auckland is hot cake. Have a great day ! |

Peaceful123:how I wish I knew exactly why they came to that conclusion. Well i have moved on and I'm now considering a fresh application. How do I measure the research component of a degree to know if it is up to 25%? |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by KaptainAfrika: 1:38pm On Jun 27, 2025 |
1. Masters of Research or; 2. Half of the Masters was research-based. pongwa: |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by pongwa(m): 3:36pm On Jun 27, 2025 |

CalabarSamurai:I applied to Auckland university of technology since April for PhD but they have not given me admission. Although, they have been updating me about the process, they asked me to nominate like 3 supervisors and will talk to them on my behalf, I did but non of them is ready to accept me according to them. They asked me to nominate other ones too, we have been on this for almost two months now and no admission yet. Did anyone experience this too? |

To be frank, to increase acceptance from supervisors, one should just align their proposed phd thesis with the supervisor area of research/interest. |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by CalabarSamurai(m): 11:38am On Jun 28, 2025 |
I don’t want to assume but is your thesis relevant to their areas of interest? Or are you willing to do one in their area of interest. Also have you researched their work, I saw somewhere that when reaching out to these “mini-gods” you need to at least show that you did some research on them. olabimp: |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by olabimp(f): 9:02pm On Jun 28, 2025 |
CalabarSamurai: CalabarSamurai:Yes, I did research on them before nominating them. My research proposal was in line with their research areas of interest, so that was why I was surprised that they didn't accept me. Thanks for your reply |

CalabarSamurai:Thank you for sharing this information, but i would like to ask you few things. Does the PhD comes with funding , if No whats the range of tuition. Secondly is it compulsory to use an agent for phd after the supervisor has accepted. Lastly if there is funding , do i still need to show proof of funds. Thank you |

pongwa:How much was tuition in your case |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by pongwa(m): 10:21pm On Jul 03, 2025 |
Drhay:54k NZD, living expenses exclusive |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by Drhay: 10:34pm On Jul 03, 2025 |
pongwa:Thank you for your response.. I noticed that at massey the tuition fee for Doctorate is written in this format Postgraduate qualification type Doctorate Length of study 3 to 4 years Estimate of total tuition fees $21,820 to $37,580 If i am correct, is it for the 4years or its yearly. So if its yearly we are talking about 9400 NZD right, so i am expected to pay it for the first year right |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by pongwa(m): 10:53pm On Jul 03, 2025 |
Drhay:I actually got a two years research masters degree and that figure is just one year of tuition. There are always scholarships for Doctorate degrees. How come you were asked to pay tuition |
| Re: General New Zealand Student Enquires by Drhay: 11:08pm On Jul 03, 2025 |
pongwa:Thank you for this , regarding the question i was only exploring incase i didnt get a funding i would look into paying for the first year, then after i get there i should get a funding. One of the supervisor i saw at unuversity of otago added that funding and scholarship are competitive, however he shared link to where i can get scholarship from the school page. Some of those scholarship are for 2nd year PhD. TLDR: my plan is if i can get it and pay for first year then i can try secure funding for second year. Might not be the very best option. Which made me to ask if the tuition stated was for the whole 4 years as the tuition is thesame for domestic applicant in phd cases |
