The university was established by law in 1955 and formally opened on October 7, 1960, with classes commencing on October 17 of the same year. It was founded under the leadership of Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria's first President.

The university holds the distinction of being Nigeria's first fully indigenous and autonomous university, and it is also the first land-grant university in Africa, modeled after the American educational system.

Great Lions and Lionesses! Uhmn! Let's identify and rep what life looks like when we were in the den.

-1). Area as one is approaching Franco Hostels.
-2). Looks like the roundabout overlooking the former registrar's office/Admissions and Records.
-3). Oba Akenzua's Refectory. Close to Pharmacy Department.
-4). Below. The walkway to and from the Margaret Ekpo Convocation Area close to the Akintola/Akpabio Boys Hostels up school.

Hope I did a good close guess of these areas. Please those with good remembrance should correct it.

Couldn't recognize most structures here though as the school was still at its developmental stages when this pics were taken.

Nostalgic good old days. Missed your unique sceneries and topography.

I saw an abboki cart, plus men and women well dressed up, abboki cart is been here since the time before civil War it's come along way.

There were even foreigner 's studying here.Whoever did this to Nigeria they and their generation will never know peace

You hardly find foreign students in our institutions these days...

Good old days in Mbanefo, behind Ziks flat and Onuyi.

Memories!!!!!

Unfortunately, it seems the school stopped developing infrastructurally, somewhere along the line. Old, dilapidated buildings, hostels that look worst than Nigeria prisons, dirt littered everywhere, very analogue and archaic system.

I sincerely hope things improve with time, so the great Lion’s Zone can reclaim its place among the nation’s Ivy League universities like UI, ABU, Uniben and OAU….

….kudos to the lecturers though - dedicated and given solely to scholarship and learning. Quite friendly and easy going…. Infrastructure and welfare needs to improve, at least, to encourage them

Nigerian public universities are presently grossly underfunded and mismanaged.

Nobody actually knows anything about the origin story of the man we call Tinubu.

Practically EVERYTHING we have been told about him is a 100% lie

God will help me to visit my alma mater again soon. Have not had the opportunity of going back there since I graduated in 1998.

Not only were there foreign students in the school, foreigners too were lecturing in the school. My dad and mum were lecturers then in the school and that was were i was born and brought up. Were i had my university education.

The country was still good then.
