Stanbic Bank Nigeria Is Holding My Salary Hostage: A Bitter Personal Experience

I never imagined that getting a job — something I worked so hard and prayed for — would become the very source of pain, hunger, and humiliation. But here I am, a newly employed staff of the Kwara State government, unable to access my own hard-earned salary — because of Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria.

Let me tell you exactly how this nightmare began.

When we were offered our appointments, we were asked to open accounts with a list of banks to receive our monthly salary. Poor me — I chose Stanbic. I wish someone had warned me. I wish I knew this bank could strangle someone's future with something as simple as upgrading an account.

Salaries were paid. Everyone else got credited. I didn’t even get an alert. Confused and worried, I checked — only to find out that Stanbic Bank opened a tier one account for me without informing me that such an account can’t receive more than ₦50,000. My salary bounced back. Just like that.

I immediately reached out to the bank. I was told I needed to upgrade the account. Fair enough. They asked for documents — ID, utility bill, the usual. I submitted everything.

Then they told me the address on the utility bill didn’t match the one on my account. I said fine, change the address to match the utility bill. After all, it’s my current and valid address. Guess what happened next?

They claimed they went to my community to verify. Instead of contacting me directly or checking anything official, they asked a random person on the street if they knew me. The person said no (which isn’t surprising — we all know not everyone knows their neighbors by name), and that was it. Based on one stranger’s response, they refused to upgrade my account.

So here I am, working every day for the government, doing my part, showing up with hope — yet I’m starving. I can’t pay for food. I can’t pay my transport. My landlord is threatening to throw me out. And the only thing standing between me and what I’ve earned is a bank that has shown zero empathy, zero urgency, and zero accountability.

What kind of bank does this to a human being?

Stanbic Bank Nigeria, you are failing. Not just in service — but in humanity.

This isn’t just about me. There are likely hundreds of others suffering in silence under your careless systems and inhumane policies. And I refuse to be quiet anymore.

I’m calling you out publicly.
I’m demanding that you upgrade my account, credit my salary, and apologize for the stress, shame, and suffering you’ve caused.

And I’m not letting this go until it’s resolved.

Dear OP, your address verification which is a key part of KYC failed.

The verification is always outsourced by the banks. If an agent calls you, if unable to locate the address provided, you should be counting yourself lucky because the verification ought to be discreet.

What customers are advised is to provide utility bill of where you live that you're known. If you're new in area, but your family house where you grew is still occupied by your parents in the same state, use it by all means.

Address verification by asking a random person in my area?

Who told you they asked a random person in your area?
They are different factors that made it fail.

What you'll need to do is to ask the customer service officials the best way they can revisit and confirm you live there because Stanbic is one of the STRICTEST with KYC in the industry.

Also ask if your account officer who the account is mapped to can help visit to make it easier for you.

Dear OP,
A KYC Agent will never ask anyone randomly on your street you provided as you claimed. It doesn't make any sense. A Kyc Agent is trained to locate your Lg, street and building number which you provided for the Bank. He/she is entitled to call you for description if can't locate any! It's possible the person called and you didn't pick or you eventually pick and ignore the message!

Also, your Bank should notify you of the verification via text! Do well to check this facts and if nothing of such happens, kindly go back to the said Bank, they will assign another Agent for the verification... Most people do this mistake by dropping Business/Work address as residential.

I'm an Agent though, in Lagos.

If you want this resolved as soon as possible, continue to report them on social media and even add FIJ.

Eventually shame will make them do the right thing and get a more up to date and humane way of doing address verification without endangering people and asking stupid questions to strangers if you live there......where the hell is that done in the civilised world because of ordinary bank account??

Get a lawyer to write them and threaten legal action. Pray they don't act upon the letter. See you see damages in millions!

Did they ask a random person in your community or in your compound?

But you have options. Open savings account with another bank with a verifiable address preferably where you actually stay.

Then submit the new bank account to the Finance department of your employer. Simple. Are you slow?

Go and do this op or you open new account with another bank and resubmit it to the finance department.
It's for your own safety too. Stanbic ibtc is very strict with verification of an account.
Many years ago, nearly same happened to me. I didn't want to use my place of work address. I used my uncle address in egbeda, Lagos while I was in island. They told me they will have to confirm the address which I acknowledged. I told my uncle and the wife with the development. That very day, a strange number called me, but I didn't pic. I don't like picking strange number. After like 10 mins, my instinct told me it could be them. I called back, the said they couldn't verify my address because someone outside the gate told them they knew nobody of such name. I begged them to go back and someone is at home and I was not around. They agreed. I called my uncles wife and she attended to them when they came back. And that was it.
They might have called you but you didn't know or overlooked it that day. It should be easy to resolve.
Also you can get a very close friend that can be visited and will help you out or relative address and inform them. Get their utility and upgrade the form. Many ways to do that.

You are wasting time.

You can adopt either of the following:
- Tag them on X and blast them, you would see rapid action.

- Request to change your selected bank to another which has credited your colleagues.

Good luck.
