Staffing cuts to the Austin/San Antonio weather service happened in May 2025. 22% of the staff were played off. This location oversees central Texas and Kerr Co. They also implemented a hiring freeze. These cuts lead to the loss of the warning coordination meteorologist and the observing program leader. These roles are crucial. NOAA also suspended weather balloon launches in parts of central Texas due to the staffing cuts. These upper-air data collectors are vital for predicting storm development and flood potential.

Flash flood alerts were issued, but that doesn’t mean people had the full picture or lead time to take meaningful action, especially in the overnight hours when people are asleep or unaware. The issue isn’t whether a warning eventually came through…the issue is how early, how specific, and how forcefully that warning was communicated. In Kerr County, the local NWS office was severely understaffed due to federal cuts, including vacancies in key positions like the Warning Coordination Meteorologist. At the same time, upper-air balloon launches (which help forecast rapid storm development) had been cut back across Texas. This seriously weakened their ability to detect HOW intense the rainfall would be, how fast it would hit, and which areas were most at risk. That means alerts were reactive, not proactive. And for some families, came too late or weren’t alarming enough to trigger evacuation. Many have said the warnings were given a low probability and did not prompt evacuation orders. The lack of emergency coordinators and weather tools that detect intensification lead to delayed response.

Why stop at school? Why doesn't the government feed them at home and at church?
So they give at least 100 pounds a month, you still want them to cook a meal for the kids at school? Choose one. Either they cook the food or they give the childcare benefit.
