Shey una say AI is going to take over all jobs.

You guys also forgot that over-reliance on machines will also result in brain drain

Keep hyping machines that we created. That's actually another indication of brain drain def.

Insightful exchanges on this thread. Upon checking, I saw that it originated in the Education section. No wonder cheesy

Why not replace written paper submission with oral defence so the ideas are forced to pass through the brain of the the students and not just from Internet to paper.
Cramming must be discouraged. Not everyone has overcome stage fright. Pen and paper has produced Newton and Einstein. So, we can return to it.

In oral examination, some students might suddenly experience stage fright or loss of memorised material, starts to panic. Some subjects are well suited to oral rendition, like law, however some other subjects do need complex calculations to show workings, physics.
getting a balance in modern time when it comes to learning and understanding have really change, times have change so has acquisition of knowledge. i thing educational system should not move in same line as technology because the same old system brought the world to where it is now. the traditional method of writing should never die. people wrote complex programs, equations, theories etcs without computers, if we leave it all to computers they will some day make humans redundant and we gradually getting there.

If they return to pen and paper and schools and WAEC in Africa are beginning to do CBT exams, the reverse will now become the case. We will see how it goes.

I did ElectEng in University in a system where all of our exams were either open notes, open book(where the student was allowed to bring any written text into the exam hall and use any information contained in aforementioned text to his aid in completing the exam) or the student was allowed one self written "cheat-sheet"(here, the student is allowed to write any and all information(equations, identities e.t.c) that he believes will help him in the examination). Now here's the paradox: If you found yourself having refer to any of the literature that you were allowed to bring into the exam hall then you were almost certainly going to fail the exam. In the system that I schooled in, actually understanding the course-work was far more valuable than rote-memorizing, and here's where oral examinations can be important. While any half-wit can copy down something that they got from the ChatGPT every single one of them, without exception, will fail when they are forced to face an oral defense panel.
Very interesting education system you got over there

How many of them can actually handle an oral defense? In one of my courses here in the U.S., our art instructor required us to not only submit a final paper but also defend it orally. Out of 21 students, 15 refused to show up and many of them failed because the final was worth 300 points. Some people just aren’t serious about learning.

Turn off internet connection now

They can use LAN networks without access to the net for the exams simple

I agreed with you to some extent. I failed my first open book, open everything test in the US. It was system design and analysis course. I did not study because I thought it was going to be easy as it is going to be open book.
However, I think it will be easy to pass oral defence of most courses with the help of AI. It will just turn into a form of assignment presentation that normally carried 10% of total grade. Although there are certain courses where the final exam is project presentation and defence it is not the best for certain science and math courses.

Even with pen and paper, WAEC has become a useless test of our children's knowledge. Cheating has become the mode in all secondary schools undertaking the examination.

This is what I saw coming more than 10 years ago! The worst hit would be third world countries who will now be doubly enslaved with knowledge by human and machine.

Those who've read the book: intellectual slavery, can attest to where I warned that when white people invent this thinking machine, we'll be taken further backward. That's exactly what's happening now.

AI isn't a good thing unless you ALREADY know what you're doing.

Using AI to write an exam is like someone who doesn't know how to drive a car entering a driver-less car to get to a destination, then claiming that he/she knows how to drive.

AI is very helpful for research only. Still, you must cross-check.

NB: Oral examination may be a fix as some people suggested but that's like being half wise.

The ultimate solution is to re-think how exams should occur. The old pre-digital era is gone.

Educators must embrace a "real time" digital type of examination, whereby students write in an internet-less computer, and their input screen monitored in a room.
Yea, just like it's being done in NOUN e-exam. Only you and computer, no internet, you won't even have same questions with those sitting around you and you get your score immediately you finish and submit.

We need a balance. While we may not fully rely on the old form of learning. We can balance it out by encouraging students to do real time research on topics especially for those in the sciences to help them build a coherent comprehensive knowledge base to aid in their defence. I use AI sometimes just for the fun of seeing what it can do but when I really wanna do research. It's a knowledge trail for me. Where I comb the net for information and read study notes for clarity. AI if not checked will bring about a Breed of brain dead individuals who are so addicted to machines that they've practically become useless to themselves.

All mathematics and engineering problems will henceforth be handled by AI. Students should only be tested for holistic grasp of concepts.
Nothing can be done. Just like when calculator was invented, humans stopped doing calculations manually

How will A.I. help anyone when trying to explain a technical concept to a panel of human experts? No one is going to let you in there with an iPhone.

yea i get your point but how many student can strike a balance, one of the most difficult study is the one you will be judged with, reading to pass an exam many student surely find a way to cut corners either here in nigeria or abroad, only a few book warn will really wan to put their brain to the test to get the best out of it. during my school years if i had the opportunity many student have now i will have probably done same thing. we graduated at a time having a PC was heavy luxury, writing your final year project you sleep in the school library for weeks because cyber cafe was scare and expensive note it forged us and made us who we are now

Yeah, the no internet enabled terminals might be a good solution. And the wifi should be totally disabled, so that students don't use their own devices as hotspots.
