FG Pegs Tertiary Institution Admission Age At 16 by InfoGuru118(op): 11:02am On Jul 08, 2025
The federal government has officially fixed the minimum age for entry into the country’s tertiary institutions at 16 years, News360 Nigeria reports.

This decision was announced on Tuesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the opening of the ongoing Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that the government would no longer tolerate any admission conducted outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), warning that such exercises would be deemed illegal and those responsible prosecuted.

He stressed that the 16-year admission age benchmark is final and non-negotiable.

The minister further cautioned heads of institutions against engaging in admission racketeering, noting that any attempt to undermine the process would attract severe legal consequences.

What happend to those that they gave potential opportunities for: the underaged that must score above 320 in the last jamb? That means they have been scammed. Government and inconsistencies in their policies.

I think this is fair enough. It will lay all controversies about admission to rest. It should be adopted and made the baseline for new admissions.

Good!
Cos proper neuronal growth that forms decision making does not start till 16, hence the reason that is the age most countries abroad peg as 'independent age'
I hope those advanced secondary schools parading themselves as private Universities will also imbibe this.
No need raising 'pampers' adults all in the name of going CU, people that can't function without calling Mummy at 24 lol

Kudos to all the parents who have rushed their parents by falsifying age to 18 and above just to secure admission… now it's no longer necessary.

IMO, a child of 16 is even too young to be in the university. What people mostly do in school is cram and pour. A university should be a place where people are involved in critical thinking and coming up with innovative solutions. I don't see how a child of 16 can do that.

If you return to read the books you used during your undergrads, the way you understand it now won't be the same way you understood that time because your brain is well advanced now. I think the limit should be 18 or 16 years with the prerequisite that the child hits 300 or above in UTME.
Re: FG Pegs Tertiary Institution Admission Age At 16 by DeepSight(m): 11:16am On Jul 08, 2025
Perfect!

Enough with those who think thier kids are Einstein and so should be admitted at six years old.

University is not just about passing exams. Its a whole social experience which prepares the individual for the adult larger society.
Re: FG Pegs Tertiary Institution Admission Age At 16 by ElevationD: 11:16am On Jul 08, 2025
Parents, especially the wealthy, will always find ways to subvert it. They are the ones who use money to buy teachers, JAMB expo and force admissions for children less than that age.

That benchmark enables the child to be prepared, with even though not fully. If the old system of higher level is as still in operation, the benchmark would have been at 18.

There have been stories from here and oversease of kids admitted to university at 14, 13, 12, and many of them may do well, but eventually emotionally crash at some point. Maturity is the issue.

The truth is, 16 is even too young self. At the end, kids have to be a bit mature to enter university. It's not secondary school. No one will give you notes, and no one will tell you ye must study.

Hasn't it been 16yrs of age ever since?
How is this a news anyways.

6 years for Nursery and Primary
6yrs for secondary
That's 12yrs.

As my son is already 6yrs of age and in pri.1 so 6+12=18... 2yrs difference...

Okay I know what to do then

They have not been scammed. Prior to this final decision, JAMB will be out of order to bar them. That's why JAMB inserted several conditions.

There's no guarantee that they will even be admitted. It's institutions that admit students, not JAMB.

For UNILAG, even if you like score 400 in JAMB, if you're not 16 and above, you can't even sit for UNILAG post UTME. FG is just catching up with UNILAG and that's probably because the current Minister of Education had first-hand experience of the benefits as he is an Akokite. University of Lagos(UNILAG), the University of First Choice, has been using age limits for decades!

My first son is same age and class but he'll gain admission at 20years. He must spend 2 to 3 years learning a skill. He loves tech by my observation.

Better than the age of 18 that some northern law makers were pushing for before. Same people that believe a gurl below the age of 16 can get married. Funny.

I do agree very well, but some 20 years old students too behave like a teenageer. So it is vice versa. This supposed not be a debate at all. 16 years as an average is too young. It supposed to be around 18 years , which is fair enough.
But you don't blame them too.
When employers too are pegging maximum age for a particular job as 22, then it gives room for all these manipulations. Hope they will maintain this one.

Apart from that bro ...it will save us from graduating kids, I saw a lady and she told me she was 17years and in 300 level I was astonished.. but weather we like it or not maturity also comes with age is a major factor.

Today we have parents who want thier children to jump classes or level cos they think he/she is too brilliant. ..and some becos of selfishness move thier kids from one school to another and put him/her in another level far higher than.

Listen to me parents apart from my first degree am also a certified teacher with years of experience before I left no matter how brilliant that child is let him/her go through the ranks of academic qualifications. There is always something to learn apart from cognitive learning at each level it helps develop and build the child properly.

I initially didn't want to get a UTME form for my son because he falls for that "underage" category after he finished his SSCE. After much deliberations and reading the conditions the jamb gave, I decided to test his knowledge and see may be he would do well. I have to even change his course of study from unilag to another private school, just in case because I know unilag won't give him admission with that age. But I have told him it's 50/50. He did well and scored 321, but I know it will be very tough because of change of policies. So his admission will not happen now, I guess. He will wait for next year and I will get SAT for him too. I still support the policies but they should have defined it from the beginning and not allow them to write the exams at all. I got admission around 20 years of age despite that it was tougher in our time. Private schools just came and scattered everything.
