U.S Slashes Visa Validity For Nigerians To 3 Months, Single Entry by Editorialtimes(op): 11:11pm On Jul 08, 2025
In a major development affecting international travel, the United States has drastically reduced the validity and entry privileges of most non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerian citizens, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria announced on Tuesday, The Bureau Newspaper reports.

Under the new directive, most affected visa categories will now be limited to a single entry and a three-month validity period, a significant shift from previous arrangements that offered multiple entries and longer durations.

The policy takes immediate effect from July 8, 2025, but the U.S. Embassy clarified that visas issued prior to the effective date will retain their original validity and entry terms.

Why the Change?

The U.S. Embassy said the move is part of a global visa reciprocity review, a policy framework aimed at ensuring U.S. citizens are granted similar visa treatment in other countries.

“The U.S. Mission is working with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria can meet the criteria,” the statement read.

According to the embassy, Nigeria must meet certain benchmarks to restore or improve its visa reciprocity status. These include:

Issuance of secure travel documents with verifiable biometric identity features

Implementation of systems to track visa overstays

Improved information-sharing on security and criminal records with U.S. authorities

Ongoing Evaluation

The U.S. noted that visa policy for Nigeria will be subject to regular review, and adjustments could be made depending on Nigeria’s progress in fulfilling the required conditions.

The changes come at a time when bilateral relations between the two countries remain strong but are being recalibrated in areas of immigration, security, and global mobility.

Our leaders are the cause of it. Nigeria is now an extortion ground. It’s been going on for along time. Pay outrageous visa fees and still get denied without even an interview.

All the monies are being moved to their respective Countries

Bad leaders have made Nigeria a laughing stock.

Well, it's the USA's right to do whatever pleases her as far as the issuance of visas is concerned.

But, it beats one's imagination to see Nigerians falling over themselves in other to go to America and other countries.

As for me, "I love my country, I no go lie", echoing Professor Wole Soyinka.

Let's build our country for a better tomorrow.

No one else will do it for us!

It’s not just the greediness of our local champion, tribal leaders looters and the greediness of ALL of us who allow them emerge from among us that needs to stop.

We need to stop the mental laziness that breeds poverty and deprivation of basic human services and public utilities like pipe borne water and electricity.

Neo-black Problem: Must Blacks Be Ruled by Whites in Order to Prosper?

In short, the neo-black dilemma may be framed as follows: is it better to live under white rule without political dignity but with basic life-sustaining standards for many;

or to live under black rule with illusory political dignity and without basic life- sustaining standards for the majority?

The path forward for Africa lies in cultivating higher and adequate levels of personal and communal agential integrity as well as full personal responsibility and productivity. Not to mention creativity (including epistemic creativity), productive justice (such as merit and freedom), harmony and reconciliation at local and international levels, and a proper domestication of capitalism and other related values and institutions.

Africa must stop wasting her time on dreams of socialism because it is a system of wealth distribution primarily. Whereas, capitalism is a system of wealth creation primarily, and wealth has to be produced before it can be distributed.

The Lagos magician has been a complete and total disaster. Ebilokan has been an absolute failure beyond any doubt.

Elevating him to federal level has enabled us see his incredible incompetence in 3D, walahi since he does not have Obasanjo to blame for his failures like he did in 1999-2007. No place to hide!

May Day: Hunger, unemployment, insecurity real— Tinubu

According to him: “The theme demands our collective attention and serves as a stark reminder of the need to create an environment where every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute to the growth and prosperity of our nation. As your President, I assure you that this administration is committed to creating such an environment for the common good.”

On the economic hardship, he noted that while it is a global phenomenon, its effects on Nigerians are particularly severe.

Tinubu said: “I am aware of the peculiarities of the economic hardship Nigerians face—rising living costs, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and the loss of livelihoods. These challenges are real and demand definitive solutions, which I am poised to address as your President.

Because of the president and his drug record,
USA have lost all respect for the Nigerian people

They’ve been receiving back to back from the US since last week

Some African leaders are doing that but you just refuse to notice it. That includes Tinubu with his reforms that have brought temporary pain. In future you'll thank him when we displace South Africa from our rightful crown as African big economy and developed country. You will not see Nigerians immigrating just like the South Africans because Nigerians will have all the things that they need in our country. We just need to be patient and work and support the president. Rome wasn't built in a day .

I cannot wait for the day most Nigerians think like this. When you get to South Africa you would wonder if they are in the same continent as us, these people just don't care about abroad. Whether rich or poor, they could care less. The embassies of Western countries are almost empty here ,you'd wonder if they are closed temporarily or what. If you meet them there ,they have no long term plans to the country they're headed to. I can't wait for the day other countries threaten us with strict immigration control and we just simply laugh it off like who cares what you do with your useless visa. Tinubu must try by all means to altleast get Nigeria into the top 5 most desired African nations to reside in and you'll see how patriotic the people will be about our country
