A young man took to a beach near Oslo, Norway, to ask local women a seemingly simple question: How much should a man spend on a date? But their honest answers have sparked quite the conversation online — and may challenge some long-held beliefs, especially in cultures where men are expected to cover all expenses.

The first lady, who goes by the name Vilde, said she doesn't expect a man to spend any money at all. Instead, what she values most is a man's time and a bit of thoughtful planning.

When asked if she believes in splitting the bill 50/50, she responded without hesitation:
“Yes, I actually prefer that because then there's nothing expected between the lines.”

The interviewer then probed further, asking:
“Oh, so you don't think the guy should be responsible for paying the bill, especially if he’s the one who asked you out?”
To this, Vilde replied firmly:
“No!” She explained that she supports splitting the bills in both dating and relationships because that's how she believes it should be.

The second lady, Henrietta, shared the same perspective. She agreed completely with Vilde and added that she also prefers splitting the bill and has no problem with it whatsoever.

When asked if she would expect the man to take her to a fancy restaurant, she replied:
“No, I don’t. As long as we’re having fun, that’s what really matters.”
Henrietta also emphasized that she’s comfortable with the idea of splitting expenses throughout the relationship.

These responses offer a glimpse into the mindset of many Norwegian women — one that prioritizes shared financial responsibility and simplicity over traditional expectations.

In some parts of the world, particularly across Africa, it's widely accepted — even expected — that men bear the full financial burden in relationships. Whether it’s a romantic date, marriage, or even a casual outing, the man often foots the bill without question. So, naturally, some people were surprised by the responses of these Norwegian women.

It's a culture thing. They grew up to see their moms think that way and it stuck. Most African women grew up to see their dads buy everything and pay for everything in the family and it stuck.

High earning country where everyone knows it is not easy for the next person to acquire funds. They are also well educated. Ignorance is a big reason why some well-to-do people choose to take a backseat when it comes to expenses.
