Good day, sir. Thank you for your input and advice; it's well appreciated. COA = $62,132, Scholarship = $37,132, deficit = $25,000 covered by personal savings.
Is this a year program or two? If a year, it might fly however, if more than a year, you mean you have $50000 (~N80MM) you can throw away for school considering the Nigerian economy? This is part of the way a VO reasons, so you need be able to convince your interviewer why the investment is truly worth it.

FUNDING and Emotions are not the same. Requirements are there—it's left for the applicant to fulfill.
There are schools who give students funding without the GRE despite a few others writing the exams. There are many things that goes into funding decision and in his case, he is already working on relationships that could help him waive GRE if he has a very good undergraduate performance. You can tell he's making very solid plans for his future and if you cannot encourage him, you don't have to discourage him. Not everyone will go through same route.

@poormanpikin, you are doing very well for yourself. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for your understanding, sir. When I saw his mention, I didn't respond again because I owe him no explanation; he's not the admission coordinator nor the course coordinator, so I just ignored him. I didn't want to drag words with him, so I decided to maintain my cool.

The schools I'm applying to have explicitly stated that GRE scores are optional, and not submitting them won't negatively impact my admission chances. In fact, the schools' websites mention that not having a GRE score will not be a disadvantage in the admission process.

Regarding English proficiency tests, I'm exempt since my bachelor's degree was earned in a school where English is the language of instruction. Presenting a language test score would be like adding a bowl of water to an ocean - it would have no significant impact. It's redundant and wouldn't make a difference in my application.

The admission package includes a full tuition waiver, stipend, and health insurance, so I won't need to apply for these benefits separately. They're part of the admission package, and I'm grateful for that.

The key factors emphasized in the application process are:

GPA
Extracurricular activities
Letters of Recommendation
Personal statement/Statement of purpose
Any relevant supporting documents, I'm working thoroughly on these areas.

Your write-up suggests you know me in person, are you from the north? cheesy I mean that part of developing a relationship. The VC of my university is a personal person to me, and I can walk into his office anytime I wish; he has promised to write a recommendation letter for me based on my reputation in the whole school. My HOD, a Professor, and the Dean of the Faculty (from my department and has taught me), also a Professor, all have promised to write recommendation letters for me, so you're absolutely right about that. If it were Efetonore1980, I would have explained everything in detail because of his significant contribution to this thread and his kind and mature approach.

I'm considering applying directly to PhD programs, as some universities don't offer terminal/standalone Master's degrees in my field. I'm wondering if this could help minimize any deficit on my I-20. Is it possible to have a $0.00 deficit?

The cost of living in different cities might impact my expenses. If I have a choice, I'd like to know which of the following states might be more affordable:

Louisiana
Washington(State)
Kentucky
Alabama
Kansas
Idaho
Virginia
West Virginia
Wyoming
Florida
Oregon
Maine
Mississippi
I'd appreciate any guidance on these matters, and I'm grateful for any insights that can help me navigate the application process.

I'm not sure the funding can be as exact as the total estimated cost of attendance as such, i would advice you worry less about this. When the time comes, you will surely be fine.

Lmaoooo, calm down bro. That information is not true. My I20 carries a fully funded phd scholarship with zero deficit, as exact as my cost of attendance. No addition, no subtraction. I wrote a GRE though, and I scored very very high. So just do your best. Regarding that guy who told you to write a GRE, I think you misunderstood him. As much as some schools might give you a scholarship because you didnt submit a test score, submitting your test score is no big deal. Even though a lot make up for your admission decision and your test score is not a major limitation, it could still be a source of uniqueness in your application. It could make you extremely competitive. The professor(s) that would recommend you might be looking for a quantitative applicant to work with, they might be looking for an eloquent and articulate applicant in terms of publications. You just wouldn't know what they are looking for....and remember, this is a new America, you will be competiting against thousands of applicants who are also trying everything out...Now fundings are difficult to get because currently their new government made a large cut across thousands of universities in the US, which is why you have to stand out in your application. If you can afford to save up and write your standardized exams, its a great idea, but if you can't, make sure you work with your supervisor to help publish your thesis, and be meticulous in others areas to make you a strong applicant, and pray for God's direction to the right school. All the best brother.

Got U.S. C1/D Visa Before, But Denied B1/B2 3 Times + F1 Recently – Need Advice

posting to get some more inputs

Hello Nairalanders,

Please I need honest and constructive advice on my U.S. visa journey.

So far, I’ve been denied the U.S. visa 4 times, and I’ve been approved once.

Here’s a breakdown:

I was granted a C1/D visa (transit/crew visa) earlier in my career. ( which i used to go across several Us cites for work and to the Caribbeans also)

I’ve applied 3 times for the B1/B2 visa (visitor/tourist) before getting the job that requires the C1/D1 and was denied each time.

Most recently, I applied for an F1 student visa, and for masters degree program to further my career prospects and that was also denied.

I’m now planning to apply again for the F1 visa and I’m trying to understand what I may be doing wrong, and how best to approach the interview this time.

What can I do to show my genuine intentions ?

Please, I’d appreciate advice on:

What are visa officers looking for when it comes to F1 visas?

Could my past B1/B2 denials affect my current chances?

How can I show strong ties to Nigeria even though my mother lives in the U.S.?

How can I answer my family ties and mum in the US question?

Should I wait before reapplying or go ahead and try again soon?

Any tips on how to explain my past visa history without looking suspicious?

If anyone has been in a similar situation or has worked with agents/lawyers that helped, feel free to share as well.

I’m serious about doing this the right way and would be grateful for any help or guidance.

Thanks and God bless.

YOU.
So far, I’ve been denied the U.S. visa 4 times, and I’ve been approved once.

You failed to satisfy the visa requirements in those 4 times. But you were able to satisfy the requirements in the once approved transit visa.

YOU
I was granted a C1/D visa (transit/crew visa) earlier in my career. ( which i used to go across several Us cites for work and to the Caribbeans also)

I’ve applied 3 times for the B1/B2 visa (visitor/tourist) before getting the job that requires the C1/D1 and was denied each time.

As noted above, the U.S. has approximately 200 types of visas, and failure in one does not mean failure in another. When you satisfied the C1/D visa requirements, your visa was issued, but prior to that, you had failed to satisfy the requirements of a B1/B2 visa because your intentions was irrelevant to the consular but when you needed to transit based on your work location you were granted the C1 visa.

YOU
Most recently, I applied for an F1 student visa, and for masters degree program to further my career prospects, and that was also denied.

You failed to satisfy the F1 visa requirements just as you failed previously to satisfy the B1/B2 requirements. U.S. consulars are not wicked or bias. When you have passed ,they give you the pass mark.

YOU
What are visa officers looking for when it comes to F1 visas? Genuine intention.

Could my past B1/B2 denials affect my current chances?

No ! Its just the fear of your mind. Your last visa history was the C1 visa, so your B1/B2 denials is forgotten.

YOU
How can I show strong ties to Nigeria even though my mother lives in the U.S.?

You can show strong ties in many ways, but your question should be, how do you satisfy all f1 visa requirements ? Your mother, who resides in the U.S., must be placed in a logical position. Otherwise, she can be a stumbling block ironically. 👍

It was a blue quick- flash message which confirmed your emergency appointment request submittion, so your expedite application request was successful.

●▪︎ If you are doubting you may try to submit another one (you can submit multiple if the system permits you) but the system will notify you to wait for the outcome of the one you already submitted.

ER email notification is not consistent nowadays, therefore the only way to be certain is to click on " Reschedule Appointment" intermittently. 👍

Hi everyone,
I’m a 26-year-old Nigerian who earned a BSc in Microbiology with a Second Class Lower (2:2) in 2024. However, I’ve been working in Nigeria’s Civil Defence Corps since 2022. I've spent the last few weeks researching schools and shortlisted a few MPH programs that I plan to apply to. I haven’t done my WES evaluation yet (planning to), but I’m hesitant to spend the money without knowing whether I stand a fair chance of admission witb partial funding given my academic background.

My main questions:

How likely is it that I’d be accepted into a U.S. MPH program with a 2:2 GPA?

Is it possible to get partial funding given my less that ideal result 2:2

You did a mistake in the deficit, you shouldn't have fonted as the one paying your deficit yourself those VO at Walter Carrington won't believe you. You should have mentioned your parent (Mother or Father) especially as your sponsor, then you can now say you also have some personal savings. I'm talking from experience.

Do you know the status of your mum in the US?
Is she legally there?
How long?

Youd have to share your transcript for the F1 so others might see hwat you could have done better

How do you intend to pay for a Master's? Wheres rhe funding coming from.

@GboyegaD and FunnyDude thank you so much and I appreciate.

@Timshin
Did the city of your residence play a role in determining the deficit on your i-20?
Thank you so much. I initially planned to sit for both tests, but things didn't work out as expected, and I was hit hard. That's why I'm prioritizing schools that don't require them. However, if an opportunity arises, I won't hesitate to register and take either the GRE or TOEFL. I'm currently working on a paper and aim to have at least two publications by August next year. Thank you for the advice, and God bless you.

Hello Sam. First of all congrats on taking a very valuable step in your career. I wrote my GRE exam a year ago and I dont have access to those study documents again. However, I studied from textbooks such as Magoosh, Kaplan, Baron, and the ETS guide. I also took lessons from a private tutor. You can subscribe to Gremat's plan on youtube. His platform is very good for applicants preparing for the exam. The moment you pay for your exam, ETS will give you a guide which contains their questions and answers. Please note that GRE is not a difficult exam, but it's an exam that will walk through your intelligence. So you need to study as far as you can convince yourself that you are ready to write the exam. Don't look at others writing it before you. Just be sure you are ready. I trust you will pass. Enjoy your night.

I think by city of residence he meant cost of living expenses in the university town you picked. Did it affect your i 20 deficit?

Though i think you already said you had no deficit.

Besides cost of attendance usually includes tuition and living expenses

Ohhh. I get. If you are awarded a full scholarship, you will be paid stipends per month and the calculation of your stipends for the academic year would suffice for your living expenses, which would reflect in your scholarship.
