Monday Sinclair Is Dead by NaijaCover(op): 6:26am On Jul 17, 2025
Ex-Super Eagles coach, Monday Sinclair, has died at the age of 88, after battling with diabetes for a while.

Former Nigeria goalkeeper, Peterside Idah, disclosed the news of his death in a Facebook post.

It is believed Sinclair passed away on Wednesday around 3:15pm.

“Our daddy is gone. What a man. He signed me to play for Sharks. Gave me my first match against Niger Tornadoes of Minna,” Idah wrote.

After Philippe Troussier was sacked in 1997, Sinclair was appointed coach of the Eagles on an interim basis and took charge of two friendly matches against Zambia and Tunisia.

Sinclair has been credited with discovering ex-Nigeria internationals like Peter Rufai, Taribo West, Finidi George, and Idah Peterside, etc.

Coaches that helped make Nigeria a football powerhouse in the world.

Nigeria should have a structured system of helping those that played very important riles and shaping how the world see the country in positive lights. These Coaches and players that arw dying in very sad ways, are part of that group.

I remember the first time I travelled to Shanghai and met a factory boss. Once I mentioned I was from Nigeria, he became excited and started asking me if I knew about Sunday Oliseh, Kanu Nwankwo, and if I have met Okocha, Amokatchie etc. Apparently he watched Nigeria win the Atlanata Olympics, loved the playing style and memorised all the names of the players. But you know what else he didn't know? The name of the president of Nigeria then or if Nigeria was in West or "South South" Africa ...

That tells you how effective sporting activities are in building an image for the country..

A man died this week, people came on social media to raise curses on him, even when they were told to stop and respect the dead, they refused and continue to curse him in death.

Another man died the same week, people showed sympathy and empathy telling how he raised people, gave hope to several young minds.

What common? They both died in their old age, leaders they were (though, in different capacities), people give accounts about them.

What difference: One was cursed again and again. One was blessed by the same people.

Lessons: what do you want people to say about you? How are you living your life now, above all, when the roll called yonder, where do you want to be (eternity or hell)

CHOOSE!

Do you know that as we speak, the current Super Eagles squad are being owned tons and tons unpaid bonuses for most the matches they played in recent times? Even dating back to the last African Nations Cup..

If it was in the days of Stephen Keshi or Sunday Oliseh, agitations would have been rife in the Super Eagles camp by now. I guess there is a sort quietness because of the "Oyibo" captain who seem not ready to tango with the NFF.

Do you also know that most of the Eagles players who were promised houses for different tournaments they won in the 90s and 2000s are just getting to be given those houses in recent years? Some have even died..

Other countries do have football federations that are up to speed in terms of making sure that players get their reasonable benefits while they're with the national team. It is not the case in Nigeria, do your checks...

Most people don't know it, but The Nigerian Football Association (NFA) now turned to The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), is one of the most corrupt institutions in the country by far.. Do you know that the federal government under this Tinubu actually gave them the cash to offset all bonuses and allowances, it disappeared!
Read up on that too..

Very sad.

Such an influential figure and I pray the good work he put into the lives of people follow his children and grandchildren.

It was nice living in the same block, as a neighbor and watching matches with Papa Sinclair.

Thank you for being a blessing to Nigerian football and touching many lives.

Respect and good bye.
