The West took advantage of Russia being overstretched in the Ukraine and Hezbollah's decapitation by Israel in Lebanon, all because Assad is no friend of the West, and more importantly, Israel wanted regime change.

Nobody previously wanted a direct confrontation with Russia, so no one could actively do anything about it.

The Ukraine war brought an opportune moment. Russia was overstretched, Turkey had interests, and all parties found the right time. The West allowed Turkey to arm HTS and topple Assad, without looking to anyone that they directly did it. It's the easiest game in the play book - regime change and War by proxy.
