Contact the recipient, he is the only one that can assist and refund your money. If he refused to refund the money, report the case to the recipient bank with a prove that the money was actually credited to him, they will place a lien on his account.

Surprisingly, the person is not on Nairaland, not on Facebook or Twitter (at least not with that name), the account number too has not been posted on these platforms. As much as I want to get my funds back, I will also want to respect the person's privacy by not exposing the account details publicly, however, the name is Atobase Hammed Alabi ,

if anyone can or wants to help me get the details of the recipient, please send a DM here or mail me on contact@martinsmorris.com.ng

@nlfpmod please help out.
Oga comot body for this money it's gone , don't waste ur time .....putting notice on social media ....na person tell you to be super fast when sending money , this will teach you a lesson ..always ask people their names twice before u make payment via banks app....don't reply on the digits ....ask their name the way they have it on their bank before sending

This mistake is from you and you know you gonna spend money getting affidavit and before you can get court order for this civil case it will be hard ....so don't waste ur time pray the recipient send it back

Get a court Oder mandating GTB to refund same into your Opay account
But you need to act fast before the money is withdrawn
The cheapest court order he can find today will cost him 100k after all the reports he needs to do

I hate to break it to you, but the money is gone. If you show proof of the money being refunded, not voluntarily but through court order, I will gift you 50k.

Your only hope is that you somehow find the recipient and he is a God fearing dude who refunds your money.
Re: How Do I Solve This Erroneous Transaction Error? by Adewale1603(m): 4:19pm On Jul 23, 2025
Anything that has to do with online money transactions, one should be very careful and patient. You should double check and check and confirm before pressing that transfer okay button, more especially large sums of money. It won't take you much time to double check and confirm your receipent account no and name, than to have transactions issues of visiting the bank, waiting for weeks to resolve your issues, bla bla bla....

1. Quickly get a court affidavit and write both banks and have the actual funds in the account restricted.
2. Instruct a lawyer to file an action to have the funds reversed to you.
3. It's the only way out. And do so quickly before the unintended recipient dissipates the funds.
Una go just dey give all these Textbook advice. On top of how much?!

How much will he pay the lawyer? And the court clerk to push the case forward?

Op. your only sure bet is to locate the recipient and appeal to his conscience. He might refund the money.

in my own case i wrote a letter in my bank instructing the receiver bank to restrict the that account, which they did and the receiver had no choice but to refund me
Re: How Do I Solve This Erroneous Transaction Error? by ngmgeek(m): 4:22pm On Jul 23, 2025
Get a lawyer to write a formal letter to both banks and they will address this for you. Also, let your lawyer inform them that you reserve the right to ask for your legal fees to be paid should they fail to have this issue resolved and it is escalated.

This is an honest mistake on your part. Next time put in the full account number okay 👍

This seems to happen quiet often which leads me to believe that some of you have no business handling money. This level of carelessness can never be excused. You wanted to send N128k and couldn't spare about 10 seconds to verify the recipient's details that's staring you in the face. Congratulations!

Yesterday, I attempted to pay my mechanic the remaining balance of N128,000 for car repairs via my Opay app. I had previously paid him part of the amount. He provided the first four digits of his GTBank account, and an account appeared in my app after entering them. I confirmed with him that it was a GTBank account, and he agreed, so I transferred the funds.

A few hours later, the mechanic informed me he hadn’t received the money. Initially, we suspected a network delay and agreed to wait until today. However, this morning, he confirmed the funds were not credited, and I discovered I had sent the money to the wrong account. Shockingly, the recipient’s account shared the same first four digits, was also with GTBank, and both account holders have Yoruba Muslim names, an unlikely coincidence.

Upon checking my transaction receipt, I realized the account was one I had sent money to previously, which is why it appeared in my app. I immediately contacted Opay, but they stated they couldn’t initiate a recall because only the first four digits matched. They advised me to contact GTBank to obtain the recipient’s details or request a refund from the recipient. GTBank, however, refused to assist unless Opay contacts them, and Opay insists they cannot act due to the mismatch in account numbers. I’m at a loss on how to resolve this issue, as neither Opay nor GTBank is providing actionable assistance.

Is there a way to retrieve the recipient’s details using the transaction session ID or account number? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

best help is court order if you don't have the erroneous recipient contact details.

I initially thought about that, but I also said to myself that the mistake was from me, and it will be somehow to restrict his account for something he has no idea about. If I had contacted him and he refused to refund, that definitely would be my next line of action, but the banks refusal to help out puts me in a difficult situation. I may have to get that court order and restrict his account for something he has no idea about.
His account will not be restricted. the exact amount would be placed on lien till court order is confirmed and consent gotten for reversal.

If I understand you correctly, you stated above that the account you mistakenly credited was one you had previously sent money to, right? My question to you now is this: how is it that you don't remember the transaction or business you initially had with the owner of that account? Or do you normally send money to random people without keeping any record of the purpose?

I mean, don't you keep notes or narrations of your transactions? What I'm essentially asking is this: if you had indeed sent money to Atobase's account before, what kind of business did you have with him? That information could help you recall his full details — his office, shop, or whatever it may be.

So how am I to sort this out? Or I should forget about the money in this hard time?

I have contacted a couple of lawyer friends to see the way forward and probably get an affidavit.
See, bros, if I were you, I'd let go. Why spend more on legal fees to get little, by engaging a lawyer in this matter?

I went to a gtbank branch and the lady bluntly told me they can not do anything about it until Opay contacts them. Opay, on the other hand is refusing to contact them because only the first 4 account numbers match. I am in a limbo, i don't even know. I have promised myself that if i visit another GTbank branch and they eventually help me out or restrict the account, I will go back to that first branch, meet the young banker and scream at her long eyelashes for deliberately assisting in fraud.
The person you met may not be fully informed. I recommend visiting another branch. I had a similar issue in March when I mistakenly transferred ₦220,000 to the wrong person who had the same first name, Paul, without verifying the surname — which turned out to be the key difference.

I visited the branch and explained the situation. They requested only the transfer amount, reference number, and date of the transaction. They were able to place a lien on the amount, preventing the recipient from withdrawing the funds. However, they informed me that the money could not be reversed without the recipient’s consent.

I called the recipient, but he initially denied receiving the funds. After some back-and-forth — and likely realizing he couldn't access the money — he eventually admitted to it and agreed to authorize the reversal

I think you should try to trace who you sent the money to. Download your statement account for 3-4 months and trace when you sent money to the person and the amount, maybe that will give you an idea of who the person is and you can contact or trace the person.
Yes, that’s the best way, I have done something like this before, though it was 1k. I was new to using Opay then.
Although, I did not make means to get it back because it was 1k.
Just try to download the transaction history over the years and check to confirm the phone number.
If you do that and he received the call. It’s still okay.

Non of the people quoting you actually knows about this issue. Court order is less than 10k to obtain, just take it to the person's bank and have his account restricted. If your money is still in that account, the bank will contact the person to confirm your claim and reverse it back to your Opay account.

If the person empty his account and decide not to use it again, your money is gone forever, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. His/her sin is only applicable to that account, it means he/she can use other banks freely.

If you are in Ibadan, go to those business centers around High Court, they will get you a genuine Court oder with 5k or less than 10k within 24 hours.

How will you collect the money back even tho you restrict his bank account
lol. I'd one day be forced to share an internal memo on nairaland.

why will the person empty the account when he wasn't expecting said funds? even if, the person should claim ignorance and agree for refund

else,
you know the BVN can be blacklisted for that and all accounts tied to that BVN would become frozen?

It's just that some times people are merciful too because the error are from them, but beneficiaries too shouldn't be fraudulent

It's a criminal act for him not to refund you and the fact that the mistake wasn't his fault doesn't absolve him.
Get the court order and purse the matter. The Court will tell GTB to act and police will be involved.
As for you, how do you transfer money with only first four digits? The full numbers and names have to be exactly the same.

Re: How Do I Solve This Erroneous Transaction Error? by Osanoghodua1: 4:42pm On Jul 23, 2025
The only legal way is to get a court order to place a PND on the exact amount only. This will enable him turn himself in. But Opay can actually help you by contacting GTB to contact the recipient to initiate the refund.

Short cut is to look for a GTB branch manager that you know, he will call the GTB customer himself and discuss the issue with him but you will never be given the phone number as it's against the banking ethics. If he agrees You will be refunded if he doesn't You must go through the legal means.

I don't think you need a lawyer, it will be too expensive just go to a customary cour.

To just check name correlation with account number, you felt since last 4 digits matches, name will be the same.
Don’t you know that phone number can be the same with just only one difference?
Don’t you know that even if you send money to Opay of an account that’s has not been open on Opay, it will be sent?

You are right, in situation like this, you have to act fast knowing fully well that majority of Nigerians cannot be trusted with a thing like this.

I had a similar issue in March when I mistakenly transferred ₦220,000 to the wrong person who had the same first name, Paul, without verifying the surname — which turned out to be the key difference, I rushed to the bank immediately I realised.

My suggestion is to visit any GT Bank Branch and politely request to speak with the Manager or the BSM. Explain the situation to them respectfully and ask if they can kindly provide the person's contact details so you can reach out directly.

The Bank is likely to assist you with this request.

Wishing you the best of luck.
