The Agricultural Attaché to the Brazilian Embassy in Nigeria, Mr Frederique Abreu, has said the successful outcome of a recent cattle embryo transfer in Nigeria marks a major step toward boosting dairy production and national food security.

Abreu disclosed this during an interview with journalists on Tuesday, following the confirmation of a positive laboratory result from the historic embryo transfer carried out at Harmony Farms in Ogun State.

According to him, the collaboration among Nigerian public and private sector stakeholders, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and Brazilian biotechnology firms was central to the breakthrough.

“With this development, we expect a significant leap in livestock production in Nigeria,” Abreu said.

“For instance, the average milk production per cow in Nigeria is about three litres, which is quite low. This initiative is a crucial first step toward building a viable dairy industry in the country.”

Also speaking, Mr Humberto Da Rosa, Head of International Operations at Brazilian firm Zebuembryo, urged Nigerian farmers to embrace the technology, which he said mirrors Brazil’s agricultural transformation.

“You have the same environmental conditions we have in Brazil and face similar challenges,” Da Rosa said. “Through this partnership, Nigerian farmers can achieve accelerated improvements using our breeds and genetics, particularly the Girolando breed, known for high milk yield and resistance to parasites and heat.”

He explained that Brazilian embryos had been transferred into local cows, with positive gestation results confirmed for the first time in Nigeria’s history.

“Girolando, a cross between Holstein and Gyr breeds, is well-suited for Nigeria’s climate and can help change the country’s dairy narrative,” he added.

Chief Executive Officer of Silagreen International Agro-Development Limited, Mr Michael Akinruli, whose company facilitated the embryo transfer, said the project lays a strong foundation for the emergence of purebred dairy and beef animals in Nigeria.

“This initiative aligns with the federal government’s push to increase milk and beef production,” Akinruli said. “We’ve already started seeing results, and it’s exciting to envision Nigerian farmers producing globally competitive livestock.”

He noted that beyond technology transfer, the project empowers local farmers to raise animals with a consistent track record in milk and beef productivity.

Chairman of Silagreen Agro, Dr Amos Ayodele, said the feat represents a major milestone in the country’s agricultural development.

“This is the first time this has been done in Nigeria. At the start, there was understandable scepticism, but a few farmers believed in the vision and took the risk with us,” he said.

“Six farms participated in this pilot phase—Kosbaz Farm in Ilorin; Adila, Harmony, and Bluerich Farms in Ogun; and Divine Living and Eagle Crest Farms in Oyo. Their commitment helped bring this vision to life.”

He added that the embryo transfer technology focused on identifying and replicating the best-performing animals in terms of milk and beef output.

“In about six months, we’ll begin to see the calves born from this technology, and they will determine the future of livestock production in Nigeria,” Ayodele said.

He also confirmed that the Federal Government was aware and had endorsed the project after due regulatory approvals.

“We engaged relevant government bodies—including the Ministry of Livestock and the Directorate of Quaternary Exchanges—before and after the embryo transfer. All conditions were met, and the authorities are fully in the loop,” Ayodele noted.

He expressed optimism that news of the success would encourage widespread adoption among Nigerian farmers.

“As more farmers learn of this development, we expect an overwhelming interest. This is not about religion or culture—it’s about science, food security, and economic growth,” he said.

This is what you can only get from patriotic minds. While some are hating online, the Federal Government and some brilliant folks in the SouthWest are quietly starting a revolution to use scientific knowledge to solve the farmers-herdsmen problem.

Thank you President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the pragmatic initiative of setting up a special ministry of Livestocks and giving the support to this initiative.

Yorubaland in Nigeria will soon take over the beef and diary business of Nigeria and Africa.

This is the next best time to invest in Lagos and the South West Nigeria for great returns on investment.

There's a strategic commercial reason why all the farms are domiciled here in Yorubaland; to rapidly turn it into a commercial success!

Kudos to the Yoruba Brazilian ancestral link too. It was put at work here too wink
Thank you Brazil.

May God bless Nigeria for ever!

Well, it may sound small compared to what is happening in the current world research space, but it is still a step forward.

Congratulations to the scientists

Lol!

The guy is obviously naive in the space. Naija scientists have done so much than this. Ha ba! Only that they aren't funded well here, so, they release their knowledge to oyinbo who pay them well. How can he say this is the first one done here? Na wa oooo. This is just the first time the FG is supporting them...period.

My brother you too like violence 😂. It's an accomplishment when there's next to none to celebrate but we all know it's a let-off considering who we were!—I can't even believe I am using past tense 😂, a lot of things have really eroded off due to incompetence of some lot!

Also, The high caliber politicians have driven us to the drain😂 and the blueprint architect has laid the foundations of suffer.ing! We can only hope to wipe our slate clean with people of integrity this coming election and replace these 🤡s we have now!

Nigeria is making progress.

Very soon, we would reduce our milk importation and baby milks price would crash.

Please, take a look at those cows in that picture. Guess what, I have some friends from some African countries and Europe who are working in Nigeria as expatriates. Anytime, we order food food, I notice that they don't order for beef. I became curious to know the reason why. These friends or have never eaten our beef in Nigeria. When I asked them the reason why, they said the cows they see in Nigeria can only be seen in their vertinaries. That our cows look so sick to care to have a taste of one.

It was food for thought for me. How can our cows look well nourished when they are left to roam about, from Sokoto to Lagos inside of the Ranch system more so Nigeria doesn't rank any where when it comes to countries exporting cattles so why all the killings in the name of Fulani Heardsmen because of cows that are mostly sick.
