Surprisingly, the person is not on Nairaland, not on Facebook or Twitter (at least not with that name), the account number too has not been posted on these platforms. As much as I want to get my funds back, I will also want to respect the person's privacy by not exposing the account details publicly, however,

if anyone can or wants to help me get the details of the recipient, please send a DM here or mail me on contact@martinsmorris.com.ng

@nlfpmod please help out.
Can you take down his name, please? Be has not been ruled on as a scammer, it was your mistake, so there isn't any point putting out his details here. A future probe into his name would bring this thread to life and you know that most Nigerians don't read, so he may be brandished as a cheat.

Yesterday, I attempted to pay my mechanic the remaining balance of N128,000 for car repairs via my Opay app. I had previously paid him part of the amount. He provided the first four digits of his GTBank account, and an account appeared in my app after entering them. I confirmed with him that it was a GTBank account, and he agreed, so I transferred the funds.

A few hours later, the mechanic informed me he hadn’t received the money. Initially, we suspected a network delay and agreed to wait until today. However, this morning, he confirmed the funds were not credited, and I discovered I had sent the money to the wrong account. Shockingly, the recipient’s account shared the same first four digits, was also with GTBank, and both account holders have Yoruba Muslim names, an unlikely coincidence.

Upon checking my transaction receipt, I realized the account was one I had sent money to previously, which is why it appeared in my app. I immediately contacted Opay, but they stated they couldn’t initiate a recall because only the first four digits matched. They advised me to contact GTBank to obtain the recipient’s details or request a refund from the recipient. GTBank, however, refused to assist unless Opay contacts them, and Opay insists they cannot act due to the mismatch in account numbers. I’m at a loss on how to resolve this issue, as neither Opay nor GTBank is providing actionable assistance.

Is there a way to retrieve the recipient’s details using the transaction session ID or account number? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Please, i need help
Opay did not advise you correctly.

Gtbank will not give you the beneficiary details because of data privacy.
Only Opay can initiate a recall on your behalf.

Go to court and get court order. I work in a Court , court order for wrong transfers doesn't take more than 3 or 4 days to get. You can file the processes today and get your order next tomorrow. You can also ask court to place a lien on the person's account till your money is fully recovered, if he has maybe moved the money.
Re: How Do I Solve This Erroneous Transaction Error? by mikmash(m): 6:30pm On Jul 23, 2025
OP it's that simple, first report the transaction to opay asking them to send a mail to Gt bank first concerning the erroneous transfer to help lien the funds.
Secondly, obtain a court order asking for a recall or reversal of the said erroneous transfer. Submit to Gt bank.
Follow up with the submitted court order maybe once a week for feedback.
Note court orders are effective if the account are funded or a quick consent for reversal is given by the beneficiary of the erroneous transfer.
Once there's a recall expect your funds back into your account. Note:the same session ID for the initial transaction will be the same session ID used to revert funds back into your account.

Before opay brought the account number that means you have transacted with the person before, check your account history, maybe you will remember who the person is.

He's a cheat if he is sitting on someone else money, when he must have know that the money does not belong to him. OP should sall him out more until he returns what does not belong to him

Re: How Do I Solve This Erroneous Transaction Error? by Donmugarz(m): 6:46pm On Jul 23, 2025
This kind of error has happened to me before, what you will do is to quickly run to court, to get court order, to request for the refund to your bank. You will then take this court order to GTbank, the process can take up to 2 weeks, but be rest assured your money must be refunded. Another thing is court order is 10% of the of amount. That about 12.8k . But, am sure the money will come back. Hard luck sir.

If it is restricted, the person has no choice but to dialogue, except he has no interest in banking in Nigeria anymore. I have begun processing an affidavit.
he withdraws an abandons the acct .. he could easily open an opay/palmpay and moniepoint or whatsoever ..

So would get him to dialogue??

According to my lawyer friend, an affidavit will restrict his GT Bank account, fine, but that is what will buy time to get a proper court order to get the money reversed. She said getting a court order in Nigeria is a problem as you have to follow up for months to get it. She said she is also in he process as she sent money to the wrong account last month and that the money is restricted in the Palmpay account until she is able to get a court order. That will do just fine for me too.

In summary, all i am looking for is this person's contact details. This person most likely stays close to me, the contact is all i need.
the recipient bank should mske that available, have you asked them for that??

I went to a gtbank branch and the lady bluntly told me they can not do anything about it until Opay contacts them. Opay, on the other hand is refusing to contact them because only the first 4 account numbers match. I am in a limbo, i don't even know. I have promised myself that if i visit another GTbank branch and they eventually help me out or restrict the account, I will go back to that first branch, meet the young banker and scream at her long eyelashes for deliberately assisting in fraud.
Hahaha fraud ... If she sues for defamation if character , na another gbege be that ..

Btw, this is not a case of fraud but negligence and carelessness on your own part . So in one way, she's right opay has to be the one to initiate that request ..

You should be having that dispute with opay cause I really don't understand what the number not matching has to do with this...

Opay is trying to be a very useless bank and is trying to be complicit in their customer losing money.

Blame yourself too for your careless! You are the type that shifts blame on others. You have blamed the bank staff for assisting fraud while she is doing her job now Opay without seeing your own error.

You know what to do go and do it.

Were you not following the post, or were you just deliberately picking up the parts where I spoke of the staff? You did not see when I acknowledged my mistake many times and even resisted trying to restrict the recipient's account because he is innocent?

As my financial institution, they are obligated to assist me when i am in such a scenario; other banks will. Another GT bank branch staff told me that they will have no problem doing that if it were all a GT transaction, so why is Opay refusing to simply send a mail to GT bank?

Please this is not the time.

Opay and GT Bank acted wrongly in this Case, they could have at least "hold" the Transaction sum. A simple 5 Line Mail of less than 5 minutes would have done that.

I don't know why they are both tossing you between them.

Since you know the Account Number get someone in GT Bank to supply you with the Account Holder Contacts (Phone and Home Address if possible) then you contact him.

Opay and GT Bank are seemingly useless to the recall of your money in this Case.
Re: How Do I Solve This Erroneous Transaction Error? by yemre: 8:38pm On Jul 23, 2025
I guess the best bet is send a mail to gtbank again, copy Opay and copy the CBN customer protection department, providing evidence of transactions and reasons the mistake was made. Trust me, they will respond and let you know the path to toe towards the recovery of your funds.

no wahala. It's an honest mistake from you. Just write to gtbank as I as I said and wait a week or 2, if it's not resolved, just visit any CBN branch nearest to you and report. They will take it up from there. U don't need to write opay or the opay customer the money was sent to.
Don't bother if the person u mistankenly sent the money to has withdrawn it. The person will refund the money or be blacklisted. U sef will be investigated though to make sure it's a legitimate funds transfer or money laundering. If it's legitimate, those guys will get your your funds back to you.

gtbank can't do anything about it. He has to report to opay he sent it from. And opay report to gtbank.
