Hello bros.

Please my younger brother got a 67.5 aggregate score this year, which isn’t enough for Computer Science, his first choice. Now he has to choose from these courses: Cyber Security, Biochemistry, Information Technology, Mining Engineering, or Software Development. Which of these has the best future prospects? He’s 16 and applied to FUTA. I’m an art student, so I’m not familiar with these fields. Please focus only on the listed courses.

This was so true before AI started writing codes. If you know, you know.
AI handles low-level coding, freeing developers to focus on complex tasks like system architecture or AI integration. This is so senior developers can specialize in high-demand fields like fintech or AI, increasing their market value.

The idea is to stay lucrative, so developers must upskill in specialized areas (e.g., AI, cloud) and leverage AI as a tool, not a crutch.

He should go for cybersecurity... Alot of big tech companies pays ethical hackers thousands of dollars if they can find vulnerabilities on their platform... Currently awaiting my payout from Shopify

biochemistry or mining engineering

I study at computer science at olabisi onabanjo university 400L

Ignore those moniker that quote you
Your knowledge of choosing a course is very poor. What is the boy going to do with biochemistry or mining engineering? Do you want him to graduate and start looking for a job all over the place instead of beginning to build his own business right from school? I feel bad that even as a CS you are talking like this, it means your CS degree won't make meaning to you. Do you even have a laptop or workstation as a CS student? I guess you don't else you would have long discovered the opportunities in studying CS.

@op, I'd suggest you encourage your brother to study Software Engineering. Next, get him a good laptop and the sky would be his limit. If a CS student is coming here to condemn CS, then it's so sad. I don't know what he's doing in that school.

CS is one of best courses anybody can study. Sister courses like cybersecurity, software engineering, AI, etc. are much good as studying CS itself. They give more specialization than CS that tries to touch all.

Let him go for cyber security, we do not have enough in the world presently.
Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by Karlifate: 11:42am On Jul 24, 2025
Mr seanwillian, no need for long talk.

Let him choose Cyber Security, he won't regret it.
Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by ChengHun(m): 12:05pm On Jul 24, 2025
He should go for mining engineering. Cyber security or software development can be learnt without attending a university. Those excelling in the field of cyber security, ai and software development didn't study them in the university.

He should choose information technology, reason being that when applying for jobs they put information technology in respect to computer science. I mean it's mostly this two they always request for in course requirement, like my degree is Computer science/Information Technology

You made me talk to you like that bro. I had no intentions. Don't get mad at me. Understand that you're studying one of the best courses in Nigeria and Biochemistry and Mining belong to the class of least courses that should be recommended to anyone. Don't forget the context here is Nigeria. No vex abeg. By the way, I've completed my MSc.

If you bro is really interested in computer sci education, and they didn't offer him in futa, he can go another sch eg private university and also he should attend good ict institute
Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by VanuatuWycombe: 1:21pm On Jul 24, 2025
Think of how AI can disrupt any of Software Development, Comp Sci., and Cyber Security, before choosing any of them.

Forget the remaining courses; they are trash, when studied in Nigeria.

Coming from a professional of over 15 years, he should take Information Technology or Software development. Fun part is with either of this, you will still do programming courses as you will need to understand them to be a wholesome professional.
These are the closest to his first choice. Truth is I prefer a degree in IT to one in Computer Science.
Kindly advice on the best university for ICT. In Nigeria

Which one does he think he is more better wired to ace excellence? That is the one he should go for!

Uni is all about the certificate, so if you can get 1st class in languages or regious studies go for it rather than computer science with a 2'2 or worse third class.
Best advice on this thread. Every other thing is secondary.

He shouldn't waste his time studying Biochemistry that deals with crazy pathways, many of us who studied Biochem understand what I'm saying. It's not appreciated here in Nigeria and the opportunity to work with that is extremely low.
Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by Rhyah(f): 2:12pm On Jul 24, 2025
Just buy him sufficient amount of phone data...give him an assignment for one week to go do an intensive research on what he can find on the Internet about these courses. As he reads, he will develop interest and inclination to one or two of the courses that he likes and want to see himself doing in the future. If he builds this passion, I tell you, it'll strongly reflect in his school grades when he starts.
Let him do the choosing.
Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by spencekat(m): 2:41pm On Jul 24, 2025
Let him choose in this order:-

1.Software Development
2.Information Technology
3.Cyber Security.
4.Mining Engineering.
5.Biochemistry.

Go for mining engineering.
Very good and marketable course.
It's a new course, it was under geology and mining science.
Not a new course in a university like FUTA.

I can't believe you are saying this. How can biochemistry be paying more than software development in today's world
Biochemistry is the least in the pecking order of those courses mentioned.
Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by TempleHouse: 3:30pm On Jul 24, 2025
Mining Engineering would be the best bet in Nigeria now !

They would be employed by the Rich Politicians at least to do some harvesting before the election.

Thank God, he didn't get computer science. Its a wrong course to study in the university in todays world.

He should go for cybersecurity or IT

Biochemistry is a no go area, mining engineering is a joke in this part of the world
Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by dreamxhaser: 10:54pm On Jul 25, 2025
Personally I think cyber security and software engineering all fall under computer science.

Well I think he should go for cybersecurity. Forget software engineering. That course is just mehhhhh. Like it’s something he can learn on YouTube

Depends on what route you want to take.
1. Schools like Babcock University are good for this.
2. Do ADSE at Aptech then do a degree completion abroad afterwards.

So he’s goin to settle for either cybersecurity and software development.
