Never outshine the master remains instructive till the end of time.

If only Fubara had obeyed this very simple rule things would have been very different. Not just him, but many disregard it to their own peril. Despite its reversal it pays to be loyal, even to a weak master that you are stronger than.

Here’s a summary of all 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, each with a brief explanation:

LAW 1: Never Outshine the Master
Always make those above you feel superior. If you make them feel insecure, it could be your downfall.

LAW 2: Never Put Too Much Trust in Friends, Learn How to Use Enemies
Friends are more likely to betray you; enemies, when won over, can be more loyal.

LAW 3: Conceal Your Intentions
Keep your strategies hidden to prevent interference and gain the upper hand.

LAW 4: Always Say Less Than Necessary
Powerful people impress by saying less. The more you say, the more common you appear.

LAW 5: So Much Depends on Reputation — Guard It with Your Life
Protect your reputation at all costs. Once it's damaged, you're vulnerable.

LAW 6: Court Attention at All Costs
Visibility brings power. Stand out and draw attention to command influence.

LAW 7: Get Others to Do the Work for You, but Always Take the Credit
Leverage others' efforts while presenting the results as your own.

LAW 8: Make Other People Come to You — Use Bait if Necessary
Draw others toward your advantage. Acting first often exposes you.

LAW 9: Win Through Your Actions, Never Through Argument
Convince with results, not words. Arguments breed resentment.

LAW 10: Infection: Avoid the Unhappy and Unlucky
Negative energy is contagious. Avoid those who bring misfortune or drama.

LAW 11: Learn to Keep People Dependent on You
Create relationships where others rely on you for success or survival.

LAW 12: Use Selective Honesty and Generosity to Disarm Your Victim
A single honest move can cover dozens of manipulations.

LAW 13: When Asking for Help, Appeal to Self-Interest, Never to Mercy
People are more likely to help if it benefits them too.

LAW 14: Pose as a Friend, Work as a Spy
Gather intelligence subtly by acting close or familiar.

LAW 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally
Don’t leave room for revenge. Eliminate threats completely.

LAW 16: Use Absence to Increase Respect and Honor
Scarcity increases value. Don’t be too available.

LAW 17: Keep Others in Suspended Terror: Cultivate an Air of Unpredictability
Being unpredictable creates fear and confusion.

LAW 18: Do Not Build Fortresses to Protect Yourself — Isolation is Dangerous
Stay engaged and informed. Isolation cuts off intelligence and support.

LAW 19: Know Who You’re Dealing with — Do Not Offend the Wrong Person
Not everyone reacts the same. Study people before challenging them.

LAW 20: Do Not Commit to Anyone
Remain independent. Allegiances limit your options.

LAW 21: Play a Sucker to Catch a Sucker — Seem Dumber Than Your Mark
Pretend to be less intelligent to disarm and manipulate.

LAW 22: Use the Surrender Tactic: Transform Weakness into Power
Surrender strategically to recover and strike later.

LAW 23: Concentrate Your Forces
Focus your efforts on one strong point rather than spreading thin.

LAW 24: Play the Perfect Courtier
Adapt to power hierarchies and master the art of pleasing superiors.

LAW 25: Re-Create Yourself
Don’t accept the role society gives you. Reinvent your identity for power.

LAW 26: Keep Your Hands Clean
Use others to do the dirty work. Maintain a clean image.

LAW 27: Play on People’s Need to Believe to Create a Cult-like Following
People crave meaning. Give them belief systems and they will follow.

LAW 28: Enter Action with Boldness
Confidence creates momentum and respect. Hesitation is weak.

LAW 29: Plan All the Way to the End
Have a clear long-term goal and anticipate obstacles.

LAW 30: Make Your Accomplishments Seem Effortless
Mastery should appear natural. Don’t expose the hard work.

LAW 31: Control the Options: Get Others to Play with the Cards You Deal
Frame choices so all paths benefit you.

LAW 32: Play to People’s Fantasies
Reality is harsh. Offer escape through fantasy, dreams, and promises.

LAW 33: Discover Each Man’s Thumbscrew
Find people’s weaknesses or desires and use them strategically.

LAW 34: Be Royal in Your Own Fashion — Act Like a King to Be Treated Like One
Carry yourself with confidence and dignity; others will follow your lead.

LAW 35: Master the Art of Timing
Patience and timing are everything. Know when to act and when to wait.

LAW 36: Disdain Things You Cannot Have: Ignoring Them Is the Best Revenge
If you can't have it, show contempt. Acknowledge it and you empower it.

LAW 37: Create Compelling Spectacles
Dramatic visuals and actions attract attention and power.

LAW 38: Think as You Like but Behave Like Others
Blend in socially while keeping your true thoughts private.

LAW 39: Stir Up Waters to Catch Fish
Instigate emotions to throw people off and gain control.

LAW 40: Despise the Free Lunch
What is free is often devalued. Pay your way to assert independence.

LAW 41: Avoid Stepping into a Great Man’s Shoes
Don’t get stuck in a predecessor’s shadow. Forge your own legacy.

LAW 42: Strike the Shepherd and the Sheep Will Scatter
Remove the leader to break group resistance.

LAW 43: Work on the Hearts and Minds of Others
Influence people emotionally, not just logically.

LAW 44: Disarm and Infuriate with the Mirror Effect
Mimic your opponent to unsettle and confuse them.

LAW 45: Preach the Need for Change, but Never Reform Too Much at Once
Gradual change is more accepted than abrupt transformation.

LAW 46: Never Appear Too Perfect
Too much perfection sparks envy. Display flaws strategically.

LAW 47: Do Not Go Past the Mark You Aimed For; In Victory, Learn When to Stop
Don’t overreach after success. Know when to end the game.

LAW 48: Assume Formlessness
Be adaptable and fluid. Rigid structures break under pressure.

No 40 and 20.

To achieve this you have to learn to talk less and listen more.
