Yes there are several apparent contradictions in the quotes, but this is because many people erroneously treat the laws as fixed commandments to be applied at all times.

They would be more useful if you treat them as principles to be adopted based on the circumstances you face per time.

For example, there is a time to court attention and another time not to outshine the master. There are moments one needs to blend in with the crowd and at other times standing out will work better.
