This is North Korea's most expensive resort complex till date. Plans for the resort were first announced in 2013, as part of Kim's broader vision to transform Wonsan, a historically significant port city, into a hub for economic and leisure activities. Wonsan is located on the country's East coast.

When the pandemic hit, national priorities changed entirely. Resources were diverted towards housing and health infrastructures, effectively putting the resort on hold for a couple of years.Wonsan Kalma coastal resort complex was officially opened on June 24,2025. The complex spans 4 kilometres in length. It has a waterpark called "Myeonsasimni" (translated "10 amazing beauties" .It's a full fledged resort town and can accommodate up to 20,000 visitors at once. 35,000 visitors can use the full range of services per day. It includes hundreds of facilities: housing, hotels, hostels, motels with 20,000 beds capacity. There are 54 hotels, an indoor waterpark, mini golf course, movie theatre, multiple shopping malls, dozens of restaurants, 5 beer pubs, 2 video game arcades, and a large outdoor waterpark.Cc: Nlfpmod

Wonsan kalma is the largest tourist cluster in North Korea. The resort is so large that, it would take an average person over an hour, to walk from one end of the beach to the other. It is about an hour by plane from Pyongyang, the capital, to Wonsan, and another 5 minutes from the airport by bus. Transportation around the resort is free. Each hotel has its own recreation areas - with swimming pool, sauna, massage parlour, spa, cafe, and more. The resort is equipped with facilities for sea swimming, sports, recreation, as well as commercial and public catering services. There's an outdoor amphitheatre, 4 tennis courts, a football stadium, an adjacent international airport, a tram station with 27 electric vehicles to ferry visitors along the shore, and a Ski resort few metres away.A week-long vacation is estimated at around $2,000 for a couple.

I thought they said North Korea is a joyless nation? How come their girls are allowed to wear bikini and go to beaches? But on a serious note, wouldn't they world be a better place if dictators who have sound ideas of growth and development assume office and take the right decisions? Why do some people campaign against dictatorship? Look at Ibrahim Traore's Burkina Faso developing right before our very eyes? Why would we have a very passionate revolutionary only to replace him after four or eight years with billions of dollars wasted in conducting elections? Why would such a person not be a life president? |

The Wonsan Kalma coastal resorts shows a big investment, that's Kim Jong-un's plan to boost the economy The high cost might stop many people from visiting. At the same time, Nigeria, with President Tinubu's strong leadership is working hard to improve its own infrastructure. We are getting there gradually. |

My problem with North Korea is that, they can just suspect you of being a spy and that's it! You're not coming back. I don't like to endanger my life by going to politically volatile places like that. |

adamkkk:North Koreans are not breeding like rabbits. The country has population control. In Nigeria, that resort would become an IDP camp within a week. Just look at the uncontrolled internal immigration to Lagos, which is now full of ghetto's and illegal settlements. The excuse that Lagos was the former capital 35 years ago, hence it must welcome the entire country and the country's problems, is one of the reasons Nigeria has failed as a country. Tinapa, which was built in Cross River State, is now a relic despite having better facilities than the North Korean resort(world-class convention centre and rainforest) |

Foreigners are banned from the resort. So I guess tourism isn't really high on the list for North Korea. |

sulaak: A recent study of poverty in North Korea through an analysis of nighttime lights has estimated that the country's gross domestic product per capita was among the lowest in the world at $790 and that 60 % of all residents lived in absolute poverty (Cuaresma et al., 2020).since the you say north koreans are not breeding like rabbits, how come 60% of them are living in poverty? how many north koreans can afford to go to this resort? how is "The excuse that Lagos was the former capital 35 years ago, hence it must welcome the entire country and the country's problems, one of the reasons Nigeria has failed as a country"? |
