Doctors online, What’s the cause of having a big or pointed navel like this?

Reminds me of my childhood . Can't believe mine has become so small despite all the body shaming I got as a kid......I remembered me asking my mom what crime I committed as a baby that made her to let me have this kind of belly button . Cuz my friends were all making jest of it and some were even pressing it,while mimicking the sound of the horn of those ice cream sellers

What is know is that, over time, some reduces. But I don't know that really is the cause.

I hardly see people with big navel, mature or small. It could be recent medical advancement

It is called an umbilical hernia. It is due to a defect in the wall of the abdomen. As the infant grows, it normal reduces on it's own. However if by 5 or 6 years old and it has not reduced, surgery can be done to fix the defect.

Been long I saw long navel tho…

But I use it to think it’s a normal thing tho

I'm serious. If the placenta isn't properly cut it would start growing. Have you noticed that it happens to only poor African children and not kids from developed countries. That's because they have a more equipped medical system as compared to ours where women give birth at home through the help of uneducated midwives.

And I've never really researched on this before... I just kept that thought at the back of my mind amongst the list of things I can never fully understand...

the earlier the umblical cord ending falls off, the bigger the navel and vice versa. that is, a normal umblical end of an infant is supposed to fall off by itself within a few days (usually 7days and above) from birth. but when it falls off earlier than 7days after birth (probably as a result of poor handling of the umbilical cord), the navel turns out to become bigger than normal.

i personally observed this from my siblings when we were young. as the eldest in the house, i kept details of these events hence i was able to arrive at this conclusion.

Its a South/South and South/East thing o from my observation. Them no too sabi do the thing well. Yoruba and Igalas dey use hot water or stone press the place wella while bathing the baby. U can hardly see Yoruba or Igala person with this kind navel. I know what I'm saying

We don't correct beauty in Nigeria. Many countries especially China, Russia and other far east used to control bow-leggedness, big headedness, navel sizes and foot sizes for girls. That's why you see children of same age in a class looking as if from same parents and as they are growing up, some are already booked form correction surgeries. You see young people choose clothes by age, height or weight.
