How Do I Explain To The Younger Generation? A Throwback About The Good Old Days by Benjamin077(op): 5:08pm On Aug 01, 2025
How do I explain to the younger generation that in the year 2005, the cost of transportation from Ajangbadi to Okokomaiko was just N10 (ten naira)?

How do I explain that in 2006, the cost of IELTS exam was just N15,000?

How do I explain that in 2006 while still living with my grandma, my pocket money was just N50, and that amount could cover transportation to and back from work and lunch.

How do I explain that in 2013, I bought a brand new Laserjet printer, model Laserjet P2035 for N31,000?

How do I explain this to this generation that in 2014, that I bought a Tiger 2.5KVA generator for N32,000

How do I explain that in November 2014, I bought a 50-Kg bag of imported rice hits N10,000 at the Mile 12 market in Lagos.

Hw do I explain that the exchange rate for dollar to naira in 2015 was $1 = N197

How do I explain that a litre of fuel was sold for N65 in 20111, and was increased to N87 in January 2012.

Whenever I remember how inflation has skyrocketed and crippled the Nigeria economy, rendering the value of money useless. I weep for this country.

How our leaders both past and present had done nothing about the adverse of inflation and devaluation of the naira. it saddens my heart.

What do you remember in the past that was so cheap that you can afford, that is now too expensive that you can no longer afford?

You are not asking an intelligent question. There's never a generation that was contented with the economic situation of there time. Go back and ask individuals on the streets in the 70s and 80s and hear what they think about the government at that time.

In the 70s that we all think was better, there were people like you who were busy complaining while others make things work for them. In the next twenty years, people will look back and claim today was better than their time...

Life in the 80s was far far better without much hassle, because with your meagre salary as a grade ll level 05 step 1 teacher, your salary is ₦166.00, Grade level 04 step 1 was ₦148.00 after tax. Standing fan was selling for ₦50.00, pair of Easy Jean, Second Image, Sun and Sea Acapulco was selling for ₦10.00. And some other stuffs like green bottle was ₦1.00, bottle of Gordon gin was ₦10.00. Jamb form in 1980 was ₦10.00. Just imagine the cost of these items now.

Ask any one who was old enough to earn money, how easy it was to make #10 in the 80s.

All those things you listed above, their prices outside Nigeria have remain same for over 2 decades now.

Don't forget to tell the future kids how you and your life chose to be wailing and complaining about the issue affecting Nigeria instead of proffering solutions

You can do it same way your parents or older generation explained to you about the economy in the 70's --> 90's

Simply tell them about the excitable nature of Nigerians coupled with their ability to adapt to scarcity and suffering.

Tell them about the nepotistic, long-necked clown of Daura who had no regards for justice or the rule of law.

Tell them about Alhaji Lai Moh'd who bastardized the office of information minister and told lies to with unprecedented brazenness.

Tell them about narcissistic Balablu who didn't mind mortgaging the well-being of this nation for eight years just so he could sit his dry, cocainy ass in the presidential seat.

Tell them about men like Roaches Cockroacha who would curate the goodwill of the masses only to turn out as clowns in the end.

Tell them about men like Hopeless Ozodimgba who would be so desperate for power as to become willing puppets in the hands of whoever would ensure their ambitions are realized.

Tell them about the pathetic Nigerian voter who equates one day to eight years and who believes a bottle of groundnut oil, one yam tuber and stockfish head can feed him for four years.

Tell them about about armed men in uniform who allow themselves to be used as tools of oppression and victimisation.

Tell them about the APC, a party whose agenda is to grab power at all costs and desecrate all things lawful and democratic.

Tell them this is the story of Nigeria, a giant with the legs of a mosquito where petty thieves are burned in broad daylight but billionaire criminals and rankadede'd and elected into high offices.

9ja is ripe for a revolution.

The careless subsidy removal that the government placed the blame of the backwards of the country on was the major cause

It rendered the purchasing power of the Naira useless and resulting in untold hardship

The removal can be liken to amputation of a gangrenous foot without anaesthesia even after the brash removal the country is still borrowing upadan for projects that does not have any significant direct impact on the local populace

Flew Abuja to Uyo in 2015 and back with 22k.

Fuel used to be N65 per litre.

The only commodity whose price didn't really appreciate geometrically is beer... grin grin grin grin grin grin

If the price of beer were to move like that of fuel, a lot of us would be sober.

Meanwhile

January 2005 >>>> CFA - 0.001974 USD

August 2025 >>>> CFA - 0.0018 USD

How does the present and future generation explain to you that they make more money in one week dancing on TikTok than you did in your 35 years of working?
Every generation is peculiar, you don’t gotta explain nothing. They cannot relate and it’ll make absolutely no sense to them.

Simple.

Just tell them what the minimum wage was as at that time and what the exchange rate was.
You will be shocked that they understand everything and knows that it's not only in Nigeria that the economy is facing issues, and Nigerias case is worse because we have bad leaders.

These younger generation get sense pass us and the older generation, they will surely act differently when it's their time to lead, for now them dey Watch and Observe.

Don't you ever think they are stupid, they are not

Inflation is constant, is not always due to bad governance. That's why minimum wage should simultaneously increase due to the inflation. Do you know how much a salary of civil servants in the 80s and 90s?

Smh...

A lot of you just seek relevance for the most stupid reasons.

Is it the price they buy a cup of coffee in US in 2005 that they still buy it now? You just always look for negative things to dwell on, reason most of you can never move forward. You keep dwelling on what could have been instead of what is.

The funny thing is that, it is not that there are no inflation in other parts of the world, Nigeria's situation is just so terrible and pathetic! Like, it is a curse on the country that things will get astronomically worse off.

OP, it will be very hard to shalaye to the next generation, I tell ya!
