I am way more bothered about Boko Haram, bandits, fulani herdsmen, kidnappers and armed robbers ,which have actually killed thousands of Nigerians, than the outbreak of a nuclear war between the United States and Russia, those two agbaya countries have been threatening themselves before I WAS BORN, when Russia was still USSR. CoronaVirusPro:This is largely a skill and sociable issue. Nigerians in the US don't experience these issues. Old age reach, enter Texas and Atlanta. Costa Rica and other retiree countries are close by. Nigerians who have resided for a decade in developed countries would find it difficult adjusting to life in Nigeria. Everything would be so different. |

nlparrot:Jimi Disu (JD) was born in England back in 1955. He travels to England on short holidays sometimes therefore he knows first-hand what he is saying. He emphasized in the full video about the social dimensions going on globally in Europe and elsewhere (as nationalism is on the rise) and the desire to return to the Motherland to regain some sanity. |

I don't agree with many returning because of opportunities in Nigeria....but for the rest....I agree with him. Note .. he made it a point that he knows both sides ... most of us commenting know only one side and fantasize about the other. Then we go by what's been happening in the past...but he based his opinion on the reforms that are taking place ... some reforms that used to be termed communist ... never happens in a democracy. Use Trump to try to understand the kinds of changes and reforms that are taking place. Since when a US President can behave like a dictator ...firing people at will etc? Things have changed ..drastically. in the US ...fear of ICE. Why wouldn't Nigerians return?...not all ...but mainly those who are likely to be picked up by ICE ...and the real fear is to be sent and imprisoned in a third country...Southern Sudan or worse ...El Salvador? What I can say about the UK ... with their reforms ...I will bet the first set of returnees will be those in nursing....the ones who were recruited. They got the rug pulled from under them .....not all ..m but most. Time will tell. This is the height of summer ....when the streets are usually filled with people...day and night...people be outside hanging out...sitting on the stoops ...children in the streets...but look at this ....basically empty ... fear of ICE....people locked up indoors...like COVID 19 lockdown. Many have left ...this I know.

Originalsly:Well said. Diasporan folks can return to the Motherland if they've made and saved enough money (to reinvest in the financial markets or some form of agribusiness involving value addition, etc), after years of living in the United States, United Kingdom, or Canada. Then they can fly back-and-forth if they are permanent residents or something. Whoa! The reference to those ICE agents made me remember how this 2025, they really got dealt with by a large crowd of the Haitians in NY who rushed out from nowhere and swooped on the ICE agents thereby preventing the arrests of their fellow Haitians. It was the last option available to Haitians who didn't want to return to Haiti. |

Keep deceiving yourselves! Even me that initially wanted to stay back in the country has strongly made up my mind to Japa. Nigeria is not showing any signs of recovery rather all signs point to a country that is headed for implosion |

Gerrard59:In another discussion, you made some points that made me realize that it's Nigerians living in non-Anglo countries that are MOST LIKELY to return to Nigeria. On the "social" topic, we discussed here - https://www.nairaland.com/8466482/want-japa-budget-20m-need/5#135998521 The notion of retirement to Nigeria is funny to me. It's not comporting to the reality I observe. Last Sunday, just last week, I got a call out of the blue from a secondary school mate. I attended an FGC, this person is from a high and mighty political family in Nigeria. We last spoke about 20 years ago, he was an upwardly mobile guy in the INVESTMENT banking industry in Nigeria, his company owns one of the top mutual funds. He retired near the top of his company, I guess he took early retirement. He has moved to the USA and lives here permanently, in fact he's been living here since 2020. As I've related here, I know MANY other wealthy or well to do or upper middle class Nigerians who have done the same. My wife, her ENTIRE TEAM at the oil producing company where she worked in Nigeria have moved abroad over the last 10 years to USA, Canada, UK....including their SECRETARY. Many of these people got parting bonuses ranging from ₦150 million and up, ordinary engineers and such. And they left the country. In my small city here, I know personally TWO retired Directors of oil producing companies from Nigeria who live here. One of Dora Akunyili's Deputy Directors when she was at NAFDAC retired and now lives in my town and attends my family church. Another secondary school mate lives in this same USA with his father who was a CBN governor. One of President Shagari's Special Advisers or Special Assistant retired to Texas and lived there till he died a few years ago, his son was also my classmate and we socialized a bit when I lived in Houston. I know of a real estate magnate in Nigeria who moved with his ENTIRE FAMILY, including grandchildren, to this same town I live in. One can only imagine the influx into major metros like Houston, NYC, Washington DC, Chicago, Dallas, Miami... and then UK the mother country!!! Does anyone believe President Buhari retired to his home in Daura? Hmmmm? By the way, there was a mass return of Nigerians from the diaspora in the 1970s Oil Boom. Most made a whole hearted and permanent return, with no foreign passports or Green Cards. How did it go for them? Nigeria has an experience in this matter that anyone who cares can look into and glean information that can be used to make wise decisions today. It's interesting that it's RARE to find any commentary on that return, there's data but no one cares to do the research. Just like there's plenty of resources but the country is still the Poverty Capital of the World. ![]() Good Luck to Nigerians. |

Gerrard59:My guy came in for a funeral. Funeral is outside lagos. I was not sure I would be able to meet up with him later so I met with him at Marriott hotel ikeja. One night with room service my guy spent like 750k And he was clear that this cost was like maybe a third over what he paid at Marriott hotel mexico And a lot of people are kind of paranoid about hanging with family if family is not also loaded. One of my colleagues lost his mil like that. Robbers came to the house for dollars. So someone in the family or house obviously leaked the info. |

Gerrard59:Power supply big one but genuinely it was everything. There wasn’t any single thing that wasn’t priced in the thousands. It’s like a thousand is the beginning point of pricing. Like why? I’ll use bread for example; 3-5k (1-4 dollars )for a loaf of bread. That is exactly how much bread costs in America. Are we importing materials to make bread? There were some simple items I didn’t take back with me to avoid unnecessary luggage with the hope of buying them at home. I was disappointed. A poor quality towel runs around 20k naira at ShopRite and the likes. I can get a set of 5 hotel quality towels at Costco for that price. Simple chicken pizza for my kids 17k (12-13 dollars). Why? That’s more than what pizza costs in the USA. Every single thing was in the thousands. Where I wan begin? Fast food, restaurants or cooking at home everything was expensive. Why are average Nigerians paying more than or equivalent to American prices while living in an economy that doesn’t give them same purchasing power? |
| Re: Nigerians Abroad Will Start Running Home Very Soon - Journalist Jimi Disu by GloriousGbola: 3:26pm On Aug 03, 2025 |
cococandy:If you have good earning power and people abroad it is almost always cheaper to buy your stuff from abroad. And you are sure of the quality This is actually how people make money from 'importing'. Bringing in low quality goods in bulk and selling at hefty markups. |

We got a suite at Radisson Blu V.I for around 800k ($530) a night. On getting there very late , they upgraded us to their “presidential suite” at 1.5 million per night. It was an upgrade so of course we didn’t pay the full 1.5 The “presidential” bathrooms had crusty edges. The towels had seen better day. The carpets didn’t seem to have been changed since it was built. You can tell it was originally built to be luxurious but the maintenance was not kept up at all. I wondered what the 800k room would have been like. And this was the case for two other places we stayed. Black Diamond Hotel in VI. They charged us 2 million naira for 3 nights (two suites) and I had to call them to physically remove one of the couches in one of our suites due to the smell. stains and cigarette burn marks I’ve never in all my travels paid hotels that offered so little for the prices they charged. It’s like they Google what American companies charge and slap those prices on their products and services without offering same standards or quality. This was the same for the other services I encountered. Almost like they are on the internet researching what Americans pay for goods and services so they can charge Nigerians the same. Lagos continental hotel VI somewhat lived up to the expectation but the downside is that you can’t comfortably come out and walk around the area without being confronted with wide open dark gutters with heavy stench. And that was supposed to be the good area 😰 GloriousGbola: |

GloriousGbola:That’s what my cousin’s wife said. €200 buys you a full cart in Germany. She was shocked when she came to visit. They bought a trunkful of food and had change left from €200. But when I was in Nigeria, a few plastic bags of food at ShopRite and I was paying over 150k naira each time. I was seeing soaps that you can get for one dollar at the dollar store being sold for 6-9k at ShopRite. I usually don’t like to do conversion mathematics but I was shocked because I kept thinking “how are people surviving”? |

GloriousGbola:To be fair to Marriott and others, operating a hote,l especially of Marriott status is very expensive in Nigeria. The multiple taxes, high import duties on products, and the big one - providing almost every infrastructure needed to ensure optimal performance. I deliberately did not include salaries, especially of senior expats who were transferred from elsewhere. However, demand exceeds supply, which is why an extension is being built beside the current building, and another Marriott (whether it is the same Franchise owner, I don't know) is being built in Abuja. So, notwithstanding the room cost, market is booming. |

cococandy:Pardon my curiosity, was this visit during December and early January? If yes, the prices are fair. This is not to condone the ill-maintenance. As for the bold, I am still at a loss why there are no covered walkways in our cities. Donald Duke was a gem. Calabar had covered walkways in almost every part of the city. Abuja does have walkways with a view of the nice gutters. ![]() |

Gerrard59:no it was just last month. I heard during the holidays when the IJGBs come back, the prices are even steeper. That’s crazy too that we’ve normalized this but during the holidays, prices are cheaper in other countries. Sales upon sales to attract customers. Christmas sales, Thanksgiving sales, Black Friday sales, Easter sales, Labor Day sales, Fourth of July sales. Every company rushing to outdo the rest in sales. In our country we see it as a time to hike prices |

Gerrard59:EVERYTHING is more expensive in Nigeria than most other countries because Nigeria is NOT productive DUE TO the massively manipulated and government controlled currency market. It's the same reason the ECONOMY in general will ALWAYS perform poorly. There's NOTHNIG that can be done to fix all these things in Nigeria UNTIL THE PEOPLE LEARN and accept the principles of FREE MARKETS and freedom in general. That's all there is to it, every other thing is detail. Long ago I told you that before I moved to Nigeria, I went on my own small world tour. In 2010 and 2011, I spent 4 months in Italy, India and UK and I lived like an ordinary person in tiny villages and big city. I worked on farms and loaded cotton and loaded containers for export. Then I moved to Nigeria in 2011. My written record of expenses for the same QUALITY of goods and services showed that Nigeria was the most expensive place to live by faaaaar, it wasn't even close. Food in Nigeria is prohibitively expensive compared to India where food is as cheap as water. Also clothing, telecom and data services, I remember that very well....expensive in Nigeria, cheap in all other countries I visited. India has all kinds of factories operating in villages and big city, even in residential neighborhoods churning out all kinds of stuff, there's much more of such activity than in Nigeria. Gerrard59:We've gone over this before. Most rich Nigerians actually live abroad and I know this first hand. Or I can make an allowance and say a significant number of rich Nigerians that YOU THINK live in Nigeria actually live abroad. Muhammadu Buhari and his family is a prime example. To be ignorant of this is equivalent to the Nigerian conventional wisdom of 2011 to 2023 that "fuel subsidy doesn't exist" and "there's nothing like fuel subsidy" and the general misinformation about land ownership and property rights. About running home to Nigeria, you see one big problem is most on this forum post anonymously. There's no way to verify anything. You can't weigh the commentary with their bona fides. If one of the engineers I know in Nigeria who earns $1K per day comes on this forum insisting that Nigeria is a good place to live, I can kinda understand that but then what am I supposed to think if all his adult children are living in UK and Canada? That's a real life scenario. That info tells a lot. So whatever. Yesterday I listened to this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBDKkZ6_410?si=TXs2m1Lu-8AT_2RA One of the participants gave his real life salary as a nurse in Nigeria in 2022 - it was ₦33,000 per month or $88 at exchange rate of $1/400₦. Even if that rate is wrong, we can take it all the way back to 2014 when I know for sure the rate was $1=200₦ so that gives him at most $200 per month. Are you following? That is literal chicken change that any illegal immigrant working hard as a cook, nyash wiper, security guard or factory hand in the US/UK can afford to send to Nigeria every month. I know because I did it with such jobs. Nurses in my small city here can earn from $54 to $70/hr as part time floaters, these are people who are called on short notice to cover when there's need. There's nurses that do ONLY this kind of work. Full time nurses right now are being recruited with cash bonuses of $20K to $30K. Even the nurse aides - the nyash cleaners - earn REGULAR FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT PAY of at least $20/hour and $30/hr as floaters. Where are you going to earn that kind of money as a nurse in Nigeria? Here you go https://www.wakemed.org/careers/nursing-careers/float-pool-and-contract-positions Yes you will soon come at me with PPP....but the REAL CONVERSION that matters is that a nyash-cleaner today in the UK/USA can easily save $200 per month AFTER EXPENSES and remit to Nigeria. That's ₦300K. It's PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE that a new ABO in the consumer banking industry in Nigeria....that's a post that requires a university degree and at least 2 years experience....earns ₦800K/month. That's the real koko. Anyway, those who want Nigeria can have it, it's all theirs to enjoy, the free and wanton sex is the main thing, I know Gerrard will be happy and that's enough for me. Good Luck to Nigerians. |
