its complicated

because as a naija matter people would undervalue items they are bringing in as a matter of course

the problem is how value is measured

eg - i will never buy a pc brand new - i usually buy manufacturer refurbished

by doing that i would pay maybe 50% of the shelf price.

that is how i have ordered pcs online since 20010

but will customs believe if i tell them that this system price is not $2500, but $ 1200? when they can check it directly on lenovo website? - more so when your average nigerian PC seller will bu manufacturer refurb/open box and sell as brand new?

unfortunately, as far as i can tell the rates customs charges are opaque so no one knows what is actually what.

and nigerians and theri own dodght practices

i replaced my laptop battery and it did not have lenovo on it. i challenged the seller. i said it was a fake battery he sold. he then explained that to get the battery past customs they had to rebrand it. [not sure if he meant chinese customs or naija customs]

it is likely they are also being called out.

as an aside, customs in brazil go hard. you no fit buy ps5 for that side if you are not seriously loaded
But undervaluing it shouldn't be a headache for Customs. Even Insurance is not crying when you undervalue your item.

Undervaluing an item actually puts the owner at risk. If the item gets missing, it is what you put there, that you'll be paid.

Yeah it seems a bit unusual.

The strangest one was US Secret Service was under Department of Treasury before Department of Homeland Security was established.
How does secret service fit into treasury department ?

Shouldn't they be under ministry of defence? That seem like a natural fit for them.

Na wa o.

Their original job was to combat dollar counterfeiting after the US civil war. After yet another US president was assassinated, they were given the added duty of presidential protection.

it is if customs has a revenue target and it is not quite business as usual

traditionally customs has always been one of the most corrupt arms of government

when i was bringing in an SUV years ago - i was told i could declare it as a space bus and get a lower rate.

now you have tinubu who expects the numbers to align - this volume of goods is supposed to generate this volume of duty.

Peter Obi and Empathy? grin

Those water corporation workers he refused to pay their salaries for 7 years, were they not hungry because of Obi's wickedness? 232 workers even died while waiting for their salaries.

Why are you Obidients so heartless? sad
I expected you to prove to me why Tinubu spending over 700 billion on airport renovation in the face of a hunger crisis is showing love for the people.

Bots like you shouldn't be rushing to comment when you don't have anything to uplift the face of your principal.

There are rumors that PDP is planning to field Jonathan as their candidate to come and complete his two terms. They are hoping to sell him to northerners who know there's no legal way he can stay beyond 4 years. I think that was what Jerry Gana was hinting at when he suggested they even have candidate that will best Peter Obi .

My opinion is if Jonathan lose guard and buys into the proposal, he will only help Tinubu secure second term easily. Not only that, he will open himself to serious nasty media attacks from the agbado camp so much that the little prestige he got from conceding the result of 2015 elections; he will lose everything in a twinkle of an eye.
Lol, Agbado camp no go pity am at all, na then dem no reopen e Boko Haram articles of incorporation grin

I believe it's all rumours sha, Patience Jonathan has endorsed BAT for second term, and Jonathan seems sympathetic to BAT.

This is why Peter Obi stands out and the best option for now.

His empathy

https://x.com/PeterObi/status/1953027916465320312?t=A7S7IdPjU8bXDnu3zxtNrA&s=19

We cannot be fixing airports (which actually is intended for stealing) when we are facing a hunger crisis.

Devils in power
Where was his empathy for the folks in Anambra during his reign as governor

If we are looking for a leader with empathy, Obi should never be mentioned. If we are looking for a leader that is trustworthy and stand by his words, Obi should never pop up.

I know politicians lie and deceive people a lot but Obi's penchant for doing these consistently and yet claiming to be decent, is alarming. Does he think all Nigerians will be naive and foolish to fall for his antics?

I used to call him Adaobi then, but Obi lies so much even for a politician who are expected to lie. Even petty unnecessary lies like I have worn 1 watch for the past 2 decades which shows he is a pathological liar. Most everyday people use more than 1 watch for 10yrs which is expected but Obi wants you to believe he is the only exception who has 1 watch for 20yrs

When you lie about little things, Imagine what you will do about bigger things

The words of his successor when he was a candidate running for office and banking on Obis support

Tell me you expected Asue to say anything bad about Obaseki during the campaign Like will you talk against your sponsor when you are still needing his support

When Obiano entered office and saw the damage Obi left behind, he had to shout
