Millions of job offers are being rolled out daily but to secure a job is like taking a donkey through the eye of a needle. I've sent out more than 30 application this month; 2 replied with outright no and the rest was met with silence. No call nor message to prove my worth and experience in the field. I believe recruiters can do better. Getting a rejection mail is better than waiting in vain. |

Thepenn:I sent out more than 100 in a month and didn't get nothing. Meanwhile recently I got a job through Nairaland job boards. So just keep applying. |

| Re: Job Hunting Is Tough. by Hardeybohwarley(m): 5:55pm On Aug 11, 2025 |
Thepenn:Aameen. It's not really a big deal, just follow the job board and apply to jobs you think you can do as much you can. I had an interview in Lagos scheduled for sales executive but I didn't honour it because I have a plan and it won't allow me reach my objective. So just continue applying, job hunting is funny, I got two jobs that I couldn't remember when I applied for and despite offering me the job, I was ghosted at the onboarding stage. Just pray persistently and apply voraciously, and I believe you will smile sooner as well. You can also drop your mail so as to send you a group that posts job offers. |

Thepenn:I can relate. The sad part of it is that most job vacancies online are either fake or the payment is not encouraging. Most Nigerian workers are underemployed. |

The sad part is the recruiters lacking the kindness and decency to at least tell you your application was rejected. They just ignore like it's garbage, keeping hopes high, and the hopes fading after months of waiting. At the very core of our humanity, we lack kindness and empathy. When we complain about how cold the world is, everyone should just share from the blame. It's on us. |

Spiff20:Honestly, it's not the rejection that hurts most times but the silence. I wish they can have the decency to say an outright NO and save people from having hope in vain. |

Learn a skill.... Where I'm working now... They paid for my transport and hotel fees just to bring me for interview. That's cuz I have a skill they need. |

There are way too employees than employers in nigeria, no body wants to create, its all about the endlesss consumption. Your degreee is just a piece of paper, you paid a million bucks to get a piece of paper in return, money you could have used to get a quality education online ( thanks to mit and stanford), get decent skills and focus on marketing your skills to rich boomers. Many people dont know the essence of a degree, they go to school, come out then start looking for job. I remember my ex who was the top of her class med field, one thing led to another she got barred and her license witheld for unauthorised practices, today she earns $500k per week doing dwb surg. For me having a job seems restrictive, i like my freedom. Thats why i stick to freelance gigs and starting a business which i will like to leave for my unborn kids maybe do few gigs like independent film making or book writing. |

Thepenn:Only if you know how many applications they get per day. You will get tired of replying all mails if you are in that seat |

Thepenn:I get your frustration, but it’s not always that recruiters are being careless or inconsiderate. The truth is, they often deal with hundreds—sometimes thousands—of applications for a single role, and it’s simply impossible to personally respond to everyone. Also, some companies have strict HR policies or automated systems that don’t send rejection emails unless the process reaches a certain stage. It’s not ideal, but it’s more about logistics than lack of respect. While it’s nice to get feedback, the silence isn’t always a deliberate slight—it’s often just the reality of the hiring process. |

It's just so sad that one will send dozens of applications out and get no response in return. Even the physical ones will tell you " we will call you " and you wouldn't get a response , while the online interview ones will even take you through the second or third interview and still ghost you. Only jobs that the salary can't put you on track for 12 days will be winking at you because of distance. They will mention proximity as if you should move your house to their street ![]() |

Dhon11:For the bolded you passed the firs level interview and and passed the second level. You then flunked the third. they are not obligated to revert to you. They should as a matter of courtesy.....but wake up to the reality of the situation. The successful candidate has at this point taken over all the attention. You are no longer relevant. Deal with it. Proximity is important to both you and the company. You get more value from the salary they offer you if the location is proximate. You also spend less time, energy and effort to get to and fro work. This is also better for your overall health and wellbeing which in turn reflects in your productivity. I think you should cut the employers some slack its not easy for them too. And then please do not denigrate small salary paying companies. They are the ones providing more than 90 percent of the jobs in this country. Its not easy for them. If you have your doubts then try opening even if it is a small supermarket and you will become a student of Behavioural Science. |

Dhon11:Make I no lie you, Nigeria is getting tougher day by day for all and sundry. It is tough for the employer, it is tough for the recruiter, it is also tough for us applying. May mercy just speak for us. |
| Re: Job Hunting Is Tough. by Dhon11: 12:42pm On Aug 12, 2025 |
Blissfularray:Yes I agree that proximity is key , but for someone that lives on the mainland and got a job on the island. It's not my fault that I have no place to crash on the island and it's not the company's fault having their offices on the island. Just that I've seen differences in salaries based on both and I can not work on the mainland based on the poor take home. But salaries on the island are higher but to get one is hell, they keep switching off n on. Meanwhile like you said on your previous message, small companies on the mainland needed people but couldn't catch up with the pay. It's way lower, transportation will consume it all and one will be left to nothing at the end of it all. Now for those on the island, just few companies have apartments for their workers/ staffs , which helps allot because I discovered nearly 50% of those working on the island are living on the mainland and half of them are sleeping on the street. Ive been there, I couldn't cope and had to come back home after 4 month . I know it's hard on employers same way it's hard on employees. But they shouldn't just rise people hopes and then let them down at the end of the day |

Dhon11:I don't think you are being fair here. The economy is so unstable now that sometimes a sudden shift in policy can within 24 hours jeopardize a companies entire annual trajectory. I've been there Bro. I am now a senior applicant myself. Just last week there was a major upheaval in the Telecoms sector that will translate into major career maneuvers in that sector. Many lateral realignments will be made and this will include and will definitely not be limited to job cuts or downsizing, transfers, switches and sometimes even new recruitment schedules could be abandoned. |

Dhon11:So, why can't our companies pay transport allowance or offer a free bus shuttle to permanent employees? This is why there should be a mass metro system in Lagos linking the mainland and the island. I thought those were what the Red and Blue lines are for? May the Japanese and the rest of East Asians live long. |

To be honest, 30 applications for an entry-level graduate in a month is very small. It should be a minimum of 10 applications per weekday. This translates to 200 applications in a month. Looking for a job is a job on its own. The only country I have seen where the labour market stats really favour fresh graduates is Japan. Apart from COVID years, the employment rate of new graduates has always been above 95%. I have a part-time co-worker who had four offers. I had two offers, while my fellow Nigerian friend had four as well. The best and brightest Japanese graduates get as many as five offers from top companies, especially if the student begins job hunting early and attends a top university. Here, secondary school leavers can also apply to standard graduate trainee positions. The belief is that you stay with the firm for a long time. So, we have youngsters as young as 18/19/20 who join as new graduates. By 28/29/30, they have become managers within the department. Those who go through the university system become managers within five years. Nevertheless, the employment rate of university graduates has always been above 95%. So, it is not a Nigerian issue, but also affects many countries, both developed and developing. Whether the US, UK, Germany, South Korea, Indonesia, etc. Some are characterised by many jobs but low salaries. Here, the citizens japa to favourable markets. An instance is Indonesians leaving for Japan and Singapore. Malaysians to Singapore. In some, the competition is so fierce, they leave for nearby countries. Here, South Koreans head to Japan, ditto Chinese to Japan. Some no dey see work at all to the extent their governments mandate labour exchange in every trade agreement. Here, we have Indians. In some, there are no jobs, so everybody knows the only thing is to leave. Here, Italians and Spaniards leave for Northern Europe, Germany and Switzerland. In some, the competition is fierce, salaries are low, and taxes are high; they move elsewhere. Here, Brits move to the UAE/Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Finally, in some, the market has seen a reduction in jobs yet student debt hangs on, they accept lower salaries and change career paths. This is the US. In summary, the world is toff, yet people still dey born born plenty children. With the Internet comes easy access to information and opportunities, but it brings stiffer competition. Life is toff. Na so e be. |
