School Punishment: Share Your Experience With The General Staff Room by obembet(op): 9:50am On Aug 15, 2025
I’m not sure if students in secondary schools still get flogged or punished these days, but during my time (1998/1999), it was quite an unforgettable experience.

I attended one of the best government schools in Ilesha, Ogedengbe Commercial High School. If you’ve ever been to Ilesha, Osun State, you must have heard of this beautiful school.

Back then, we had a general staff room, and my advice to you is: never do anything that would get you sent there for punishment. The general staff room was mostly filled with female teachers, and believe me, it was far better to be disciplined in class than to face punishment in that room.

In that staff room, there were all kinds of punishments and insults. They would comment on your dressing, your academic performance, and just about anything else they noticed. You’d hear so many stories about your life—some true, some exaggerated—that you’d make a silent vow never to end up there again.

However, there was one strange benefit: once you were sent to the staff room at least twice, you somehow became “popular” in the school..

So, if you ever had the “privilege” of visiting the general staff room during your secondary school days, go ahead and share your experience.

Had a fight in ss2 by standing up to a perfect who was a bully and slapped our mate 10times just to impress the ladies in the class. Note, we were the first set and I joined the school same ss2 first term.

Fight was crazy as the typical Ibadan boy in me tried breaking a chair leg to assault the stupid bully (Kunle). We were taking to the staff room by a teacher and we had TP teachers as well. I told the teacher in charge of discipline I won't be beaten for standing up to a bully. Matter reach principal side, my mum was invited, mum stood by me that she won't correct me for doing the right thing and it's the guy who assaulted the other classmates that should be behind bars. Mum said correcting me is confusing me and she won't grow a timid boy who will see abuse as a norm. The vp supported my mum but the fact I said it openly both in the staff room and general assembly stained the teachers ego. Las Las they twisted the case that I'm not been beaten for standing up to a bully, but for fighting in the school as there were other ways I could stand up to the bully guy.

as the class prefect of my class in secondary school,I was so used to our staff room......From making reports to submitting of assignments to our teachers.....

But one scenario which I will never forget even in a hurry was the one time when I went to submit a list of those who spoke pigin in class......On getting there,I was surprised to find out that another one had already been submitted......The funniest thing was that my name happened to be the one to pay the highest amount or collect the highest number of strokes cheesy. It was gang up against me by my fellow classmates.......that day,I ended up receiving the greatest flogging of my life and that was the last time I ever compiled a list of those who spoke pigin angry

Hahahaha, I wasn't part of the bad boy in school then but I can distract during classes.

Noise maker, even if I did not come to school that day, my name will be there. grin cheesy

I always escape major beating, our principal was my dad's friend, some of the teachers are aware but my classmates had no clue..

I was the one who rather punished a teacher. The first time music was introduced to us, the new teacher was forcing buying manuscript books on us, she sometimes punish us, so i reported him to our LG chairman then, that was actually in JSS2. I stylishly told some friends but they thought I was joking.

She came back to beg us that she's not selling any books again.

Many Nigerian public secondary schools' staff rooms are trauma chambers, where frustrated teachers displace their frustrations on the students in disguise of discipline.

It's a no zone region..never you go in to answer to any kind of case. Else all the teachers will surely contribute in ur matter

I disgrace my business study teacher back then in Ammsss. This fatty woman just seize my test result claiming I cheat. I then told her in the presence of almost 20 teachers, to set another test for me and if I fail 30 percent she should do her best. Omo come see applause from teachers. She just bury her shame. Person wen want disgrace me public started praising me.

Lol.. anything with the name "General" in Nigeria is practically a nightmare. Imagine my friend serving 5 different kinds of punishments from different teachers in 1 staff room for 1 offense.

Ours was more of flogging than punishments. They flogged us for almost anything and everything. Two people are making noise in the class, the whole class gets flogged. Some people refuse to sing the national anthem on the assembly, the entire assembly gets flogged. Flogging was like exercising for our teachers, there was always a need to flog students everyday.

Tunyo Comprehensive college. That school was not for the weak. You don’t have to do anything to be flogged, I constantly had stripes on my back, wrist, arm and I was one of the gentle students.

School wey I go anything wey carry u go staff room, mean say you don commit better offense wey reach atrocity.
Mafoluku Grammar School, Oshodi. That year
1999/2000 set. Staff room is a sacred place. Better your matter get resolved in the classroom or outside the classroom than in the staff room or else you gonna get the Opeolu or lasisi treatment. You commit or not.
Shout out to the dreaded Mr Opeolu and Mr Lasisi. These two were the standard flog bearer.

The one incident that happened to me was when a classmate decided to help me write an exam. It was a Friday, and I left school after closing hours (1:00pm). He stopped by my house around 4:30pm to tell me he wrote my exam on my behalf. I told him I will be reporting to the teacher on Monday (my first mistake).
I got to school on Monday, and he had informed everyone. I was told I am an ingrate that instead of appreciating his help, I want to report him. The pressure was so much I had to let go. Before noon, we were sent for by the teacher and I knew I was done for. The funny thing is that they blamed me, and he wasn't beaten because his mom used to be a teacher in the school. I took the beating for the both of us. Told my elder brother when I got home and he told me if only I had listened to him that I should report the case, I would have been vindicated. I disliked most of the teachers for taking sides without hearing my side. I was given zero (0) for the term and eventually did not fail the subject. I dropped the subject in SS2 because I felt the level of hypocrisy was something I couldn't deal with. Funny enough, one day, the mother told me she doesn't want me to be friends with her son again and I stopped visiting their house.

The most painful experience there was in JSS1 when the girl I really liked reported me for something I didn't do oooo
The teacher thought I was crying because of Cane, but she didn't know it's the betrayal I was crying for. See teachers gathered everywhere in awe of seeing the strong boy that year crying
