The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna says the N25.9 million cash seized from one of its members during Saturday’s by-election was meant for the welfare of 5,000 party agents.

On Saturday, police officers arrested one Shehu Aliyu Patangi with about N25,963,000 at a popular hotel located along Turunku Road in Kaduna metropolis.

The police alleged that the seized cash was set aside to induce voters during the polls.

By-elections took place on Saturday in three constituencies in Kaduna — Chikun/Kajuru federal constituency, Basawa state constituency, and Zaria/Kewaye state constituency.

Speaking at a press conference, Edward Masha, Kaduna PDP chairman, said the N25.9 million was not meant for vote buying as alleged by the police.

Masha said PDP mobilised over 6,000 agents across the three constituencies for the by-election, adding that the funds were meant for the welfare of the agents and supervisors.

“Let me make it clear that money was for election logistics,” he said.

“We have 169 polling units. We have party agents, supervisors, and collation officers across the three constituencies. Even if you give them N3,000 each, it is over N30 million.

“That is the reality. To now turn around and say it was for vote buying is mischievous and an insult to the intelligence of Nigerians.”

The Kaduna PDP chairman alleged that the party has been the target of harassment by security operatives “at the behest of the Kaduna state government”.

He alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is weaponising state institutions to intimidate the opposition.

Masha said security operatives on Friday raided the campaign council office of Esther Ashivelli Dawaki, PDP candidate for the Chikun/Kajuru federal constituency.

He alleged that party officials, including the state publicity secretary, zonal chairman, youth leader, women leaders, and over 18 others, were whisked away during the raid.

What happened to disbursing the funds on Friday or earlier, why wait till on Saturday, when there was vehicular restrictions?
They should look for better and logical lies.

In Nigeria, there's no limit to the amount of cash you can carry, which is quite telling about our system. With corrupt lawmakers, it's no wonder we don't have stricter regulations. Now, with this vague excuse of 'paying party people,' it's likely this individual will get off scot-free.

This story doesn't add up at all. But we don't expect them to admit it's for voters anyway.

There is, although people still abuse it.
5m for individual, 10m for corporate, anything above that must pass through the banking system.
One of such ways of abusing it is this, having more than 20m to give to PU agents, the agent won't be going against the law in collecting such fund as they are likely to get it in thousands, but he already went against the law in having such fund as he cant claim any legitimacy either as a corporate or individual.

If the funds were not seized at the polling units or being given handed over to voters directly, how can they establish that it was for bribing? All the parties set aside funds for agents welfare during the elections.

Wike used same tactics on PDP during last presidential election when PDP was moving money on election day, APC moved cash for election a week and some days before the election, money was already in each local government. Its just to demoralised the party. Immediately the members of that party heard that funds that will be used to pay them for transport and Agent fees has been seized, it means to payment after the days jobs and that's all, the party will begin loose the election before buying will start. This is witch-hunting. All parties need the cash for election
