Go and check the map of Oyo empire, it's well documented and in libraries around the world. Even by latitudes and longitudinal dimensions.

Back to Alaafin's question, "where did Ooni derive authority to confer titles in Yorubaland in 2025? Where was that authority before now? Which of his father's ever exercised same?"
Ooni of Ife, run o 🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♂️

There are no ambiguity about who's more powerful between them

Ile Ife is the root of all Yoruba in the whole world...the King is the Ooni
Every other kings left Ile Ife for their current Towns or Cities.
Alaafin Oranmiyan, the first Alaafin is the last born of Okanbi. Okanbi is the only son of a past King of Ile Ife

So draw your answer from what I wrote

If you are a Yoruba, then, you are a disappointment because you don't know your history at all

Ile Ife is like the house of a man who fathered so many children and they all went out to become kings in their different domains
Yes, Oyo was an empire that covers the whole of Yoruba land within Nigeria and beyond but does that remove the fact that Oranmiyan, the first Alaafin of Oyo came from Ile Ife his fathers house?

Now, the man who heads that house is his father...can a man grow big and say his father is less than he is?
None of them have power. Since they're ceremonial.

But normally, the Alaafin of Oyo is the historical emperor of the Oyo empire/Yorubaland. The Ooni of Ife was just relegated to Ife.

But... Obafemi Awolowo had beef with the Alaafin of Oyo during his time. So, he deposed the Alaafin and elevated the Ooni of Ife to the preeminent position within Yorubaland.

That's the cause of all these wahala.
Thank you for this. Everyone must respect their boundaries. If there's any issue, they can call themselves on phone to express their thought.

I will suggest they have a forum where they can elect a leader among themselves via election. Anyone elected must get the consent of all the other traditional rulers before conferring a Yorubaland title on anybody.

Besides, to discuss pressing issues facing the race. There many issues that needed urgent attention than this unnecessary ruckus.
Brilliant summations.

Saved.

The Alaafin is quite young. The Ooni might view him as a small boy.

I also sense money was involved in the conferment of the title, and might have made the Ooni act the way he did.
A man in his 50s is quite young?

Which one of them didn't bribe their way into those positions?

Even the Ooni himself was known as a real estate scammer, and Tinubu's influence secured him the throne, as the infamous Adedoyin (the hotelier murderer) had almost taken it.

The bearers of these traditional titles are men of questionable character, unlike before, when such behavior wasn't so common.

Do you also read that the ife kingdom also pays tithe to the Alaafin... There are other kindgom too like the Awujale of Ijebu, alake of ake, soun of ogbomoso and others too..

Just saying you know.. the one we read in history.. the Oyo controls all activities including slave trade, military control, etc..
Even at the height of Oyo empire’s power, Ife never paid tithe or tribute to Oyo. Ife is the source of all Yoruba crown and we all respect that sacred stool. Any Yoruba king that can’t trace his crown to Ile Ife is a fake king to start with.

In any case, the Oyo empire that ruled over a considerable portion of Yoruba land through military conquest is long dead and destroyed. All the towns they ruled previously are now independent kingdoms on their own with no allegiance whatsoever to any dead empire. Again, kindly note that no Alaafin has ever been a suzerain over all of Yoruba land.

Finally, kindly note that the current Alaafin at Ago Oja is a modern creation that was put in place to preserve the history of an empire that once existed. The old Oyo empire at Oyo Ile/Katunga had been destroyed completely. The relic at Ago Oja never ruled over any place other than Ago Oja. The current Alaafin has no power over any other town other than his local community.

@Otipoju

Succinctly stated.

The Oyo Kingdom's role is largely ceremonial and of course the Aare Ona Kakanfo, Gani Adams from Ondo State was appointed to that prestigious aristocratic position by the penultimate Alaafin of Oyo. It's even a blessing in disguise that these things are cropping up now, so that in the event that a Yoruba country comes out of a former country called Nigeria like the DEFUNCT Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and USSR, the various Yoruba cousins (States and Kingdoms) from Lagos, Kwara, Kogi and other contiguous States would know how to behave and respect one another from here on out.

The embrace of disruptive technologies, continuous human capacity building, space age tech and a robust focus on the STEM fields from the elementary years to grad school are what the over 70 million strong Yoruba folks spread worldwide in multiple economic capitals require. Same applies to other people as well NOT this lame quarrels over who has powers to issue aristocratic titles.
Awolowo is one of the few visionary leaders that Yorubas have. Most of the current crop are just a bunch of donkeys who just want to chop money and flex and would shut down any progressive idea or project that will prevent them from being able to steal money.
Re: "48 Hours My Foot", Ooni Of Ife’s Spokesperson Reacts To Alaafin’s Threat by yummy001: 10:11pm On Aug 19, 2025
Shikena:
Alaafin actually went to court and won. The same way he won in 1988 in the case of Aare Ona Kakanfo when Ooni backed Ashipa to challenge Alaafin's authority to give a title covering Yorubaland. That epic case had Alaafin represented by Afe Babalola.
Also, there was the case of Alaba Lawson.

Ooni should simply downgrade the issue and change the title to cover Ife alone. If he proceeds then he would be staking it all at the court and he has the higher odds to lose out due to clear cut judicial precedence.

Ignore the drama, Alaafin can also easily descend low and have his aides mock Ooni. What the Alaafin's side did was a clear step prior to a litigation. They have clearly established a valid proof that Ooni is fully aware of the implication of his action.
Thank you for the detailed clarification.. I guess the court cases would be amplified this time around due to the influence of the social media.

If the Alaafin should let it slide without seeking legal redress after the public threat he just issued to the Ooni to prevent a future recurrence, he would only be subjecting himself to further public ridicule..

I'm not from the South West, but Nigeria History made glowing references to Alafin.

Again, I'm endeared to the Late Alafin for refusing to be a stooge of the Reckless Military govt of Abacha.
He was the only South West traditional ruler who resisted and denounced the Abacha junta's excesses.
He refused to come to Abuja, unlike the rest who came to collect brown envelopes, when their son Abiola was denied his mandate.
He rather asked the govt to come to his palace if they need his attention.

Tuale Alafin!

@Otipoju

Indeed, Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN and his dynamic team of Action Group and later UPN folks were way ahead of their times in terms of critical thinking which led to many FIRSTS in the Old Western Region of Nigeria from the highrise Cocoa House, free education, first television station, several industrial estates being built in Oluyole Estate in Ibadan, Ikeja Industrial Estate, Ilupeju Industrial Estate Iganmu Industrial Estate, etc, to produce finished goods for export via Apapa port. The May 27, 1967 creation of the new Lagos State by General Yakubu Gowon led to that "painful" excision of the industrial hubs of Ikeja, Ilupeju, Iganmu, and many more towns (Ibeju-Lekki, Epe, Ikorodu, Badagry, OJo, Agege, Mushin, Isolo, etc, from the Old Western Region to form Lagos State.

Babatunde Raji-Fasola showed strong signs of being a dynamic man because I remember he visited Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore before he died (the same year he became a Governor of Lagos State) to bounce ideas off him. Reading the over 800-page copy of "From Third World to First: The Singapore Story" by Lee Kuan Yew the father of modern Singapore which I bought and read back in the early 2000s was very illuminating for me because it broke down how easy it is to build a multiethnic city-state such as Singapore that was far behind Nigeria in the 1950s and 1960s. The now President 'Bola Tinubu too had long-range foresight when he was the Lagos State Governor by exponentially increasing the Lagos IGR, while conceptualizing what is now the Lekki Deep Sea Port, the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Ibeju-Lekki, the Eko Atlantic City project to save Victoria Island from being submerged by the Atlantic Ocean floods. Tinubu was also instrumental to bringing in the Dangote Petrochemical Refinery to Ibeju-Lekki with the provision of land, and the foundation of the Lagos Master Plan was laid which other Governors of Lagos have been implementing till date BUT more work and fine-tuning has to be made. Just last month, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and his Commissioner for Agriculture Ms. Abisola Olusanya launched the "Produce for Lagos" program with 150 CNG 40 ft trucks in one go that would be used for food haulage in the robust plan to use the construction of the "Epe Central Agro Food Hub" to crash the cost of foods by 50% of the current prices and prevent post-harvest wastages which is highly impressive! Those are the kinds of "progressive ideas" for leapfrogging into the next step of economic advancement and reduced cost of living for those folks on the street level.

So, I believe that many folks of Yoruba descent have dynamic plans BUT like you said, NOT everyone has that progressive leaning. BUT in reality, with the application of these progressive ideas, they can actually make far more sustainable money for themselves instead of engaging in stealing or the use of "pen robbery" to sign off inflated deals.

I appreciate your feedback.

Cheers.

@DonXavi,

It's impressive that you posted this as it offers more clarity on what's triggering the current Alaafin of Oyo.

That 1991 Newswatch Magazine article was very revealing. It has to do with the FACT that the Alaafins see the Ooni's as NOT being the direct descendants of Oduduwa who Oba Adeyemi said in that article did NOT leave any sons in Ile-Ife. Perhaps, if the Ooni a priest-king were to be a direct descendant of Oduduwa, I'm sure this rivalry would NOT be there.

I would advice them all to sheathe their egos and swords because power is transient. The Ooni is the current Oba in Ile-Ife so, they should accept it that way since Oduduwa did NOT leave any of his biological sons to rule over Ile-Ife (the spiritual and cultural capital of the Yoruba folks worldwide) as indicated in the ATTACHED Newswatch Magazine article.

Where's the empire today? Who still pays ishakole to Alaafin? Is Oyo today the actual site at the time of the empire?

The reality is that it's time to move on. Both kings are important. They should work together for the progress of Yorubas instead of this unnecessary bickering. The late Alaafin did not disrespect the Ooni in any way. They were cordial.

Seems like you're the one that doesn't know your history. You're just using vibes and insha Allah.

Check your history books. The Ooni of Ifè was always subservient to the Aláàfin of Oyo.

If you haven't read a Yoruba history book, then talking to you would just be a waste of time.

For students:

The (sic) was used because Olafare’s wording, “No Press Release please 48 Hours My Foot!!!” is awkward and non-standard in English. The phrase lacks proper punctuation and ordering, which could look like a mistake.

A corrected version would be:
“Please, no press release. ‘48 hours’? My foot!”

For those who may not be aware,

The ooni of Ife is nothing more than a religious priest in yorubaland.

He is similar to what my Igbo friends call Eze mmuo.

It was awolowo that elevated him for personal and petty political reasons, to what is being brandished today.

This new Alaafin appears to be a cantankerous character.

As this is not the first time he is clashing with the Ooni of Ife (not that the Ooni is even a reasonable person), but I feel it's too early for him to be racking up enemies.

Unless they have prior scores to settle, which would make sense given their open animosity
But historicaly speaking, Aláàfin is fighting a right cause. Don't forget that his predecessor also fought late Ooni for the same reason.
