Written by Mayo Bayo. Source:http://www.tlkdrum.com/growing-up-in-a-nigerian-homethe-common-story/ “You spare the rod, you spoil the child” Growing up under the tutelage of my strict Nigerian parent was the best gift I ever had from them. I am forever grateful to my mum and dad, they moulded me into the piece of art I am today. Nigerians and other Africans, mostly have this in common, our parents don’t spare the rod. I look back at my childhood and I still find some moments or things quite interesting- 168 Likes 22 Shares |

"Surprising you parents, or trying to play a prank! Mum, Dad Surprise, Surprise! Don’t even try to surprise your African dad, or you might end up surprising yourself." I learned this lesson long ago; I painted my dad's bible with brown pancake just like some bibles I saw in the church. The idea was to tell him I magically transformed his bible to a new one. I did a nice job. When he came in the evening, I ran to him while holding the bible behind me. I asked him to close his eyes that I want to surprise him, he obliged. So I held the bible in front of him and asked him to open his eyes... Mehn, the man dealt with me like I committed sacrilege. Na my mum come later settle the quarrel!!! 39 Likes 5 Shares |

YEAH SO TRUE OP. And in a time like nowadays (so called jet age) where we keep borrowing rubbish from the West, I only but wonder if this legacy would last more than 10 years. No matter where I find myself on this planet, my children must do at least high school in Nigeria. There has never been a better environment to bring up a "respectful" child. 4 Likes |
