Buhari's pro masses legacies are gradually being eroded by this administration. When we say vote wisely, we have a million reasons for saying so. This is just one. |

Seems it's complaining that these Nigerian rice farmers know how to do more than producing the rice itself! In less than 10 years from 2015 - 2024, price of rice rose from 8,000 naira to over 100,000 naira per 50kg bag because Buhari banned importation to support local rice production. Nigerians were dying of hunger, and rice producers were happy and smiling to the bank. Now, there's a bit of reprieve tyat has paused the continual rise in price, and rice producers are crying! |

One evidence stands against all if these cunning claims: When you had your chance, you made many innocent citizens fraternize with starvation. Lifting the importation ban was the heart cry of the people. Tinubu could still have been able to afford your 'gold-price' paddy at whatever cost. Present your justifiable action points besides grants and loans to the government. Think of reduced taxation rate, infrastructural support and probably, a deconcenteration agency to watch your production and financial operations. |

| Re: Local Production: Rice Mills Collapsing by lionshare: 10:39am On Aug 23, 2025 |
I don’t think Nigeria has a comparative advantage in rice production; we will only be self-inflicting high prices by insisting on local production. Let’s look for areas where we have advantages and export to the world while we import services or products where our local production cost is not competitive. This is commonsensical because it’s better to have 200 million well-fed citizens with access to relatively cheaper rice than to have fewer than 500,000 farmers profiteering from the high cost of local produce at expense of 200m folks. |

The problem may not be greed.Nigerian factors such as insecurity in farms which causes lower food cultivation and supply, high cost of electricity and diesel etc might have made local production more expensive than imported rice.It is not peculiar to the rice sector, this is why many manufacturing businesses in Nigeria fail. |

These rice people (farmers, millers, etc) should let the Nigerians particularly the poor masses breathe. In as much as there is problem of insecurity which contributed massively to the production issues, some of these people are too greedy. What didn't Buhari dọ to make local production sufficient and sustainable but na that time una choose to dey hike prices of every good sold. Before Buhari era, food was not the problem of most Nigerians. You can buy a 50kg bag of rice for N7,500.00 which I bought myself. Una talk say importation this, importation that, and hunger wan kill people for Naija. Enough is enough, FG open border make food come in for like one year let see the difference. These people don use us play for too long. |
| Re: Local Production: Rice Mills Collapsing by IEJames(m): 10:51am On Aug 23, 2025 |
Eriokanmi:This administration only lifted the ban to alleviate the suffering of the poor masses due to the ill-pricing schemes of the rice manufacturers. If it were beneficial to Nigerians in the first place, then we'd say this administration has cooked a wicked fault. Have you forgotten how hunger dealt with us? We were willing to bear the initial effect of the ban hoping our local producers would make things easier on the long run... for wia? They instead made it totally unbearable. Same Buhari's administration ought to have tegulated the prices whilst carefully monitoring the grants disbursement. The loss in investment is 65% Nigeria's money. |

yemmit90:If fertilizer is free then livestock feed should also be free. Nepotistic Buharia gave rice farmers everything they ever needed, but they greedily scuttled the opportunity. Right now they should open the damn borders for rice importation and let rice sell for N15k per bag. Nigerian farmers are exceptionally greedy. |
| Re: Local Production: Rice Mills Collapsing by Eriokanmi: 11:11am On Aug 23, 2025 |
Raxxye:Let me tell you this fact...Nigerian government, especially previous ones before buhari didn't do well in promoting agriculture. Whenever they're giving out loans to farmers, they'd share it among state governors and the real farmers won't see anything. Had there been continous funding of agriculture with the focus on rice, which every home consumes daily, by now, we'd be exporting rice. These are the programs in place overseas for decades. You cannot compare the price of rice in Nigeria today with the imported rice from Thailand...Thailand has been growing rice from time immemorial with heavy silos everywhere. People are graduating every year in thousands from various institutions but no job. Why is the FG not empowering them with incentives and soft loans with improved yields to grow rice with close monitoring? In 3 years, price of rice would drop drastically. The 2bn usd they wasted on the refinery's TAM and the ones the current administration is planning to waste would have been too much to establish the growth of enough rice locally and in a sustainable way. When buhari came, he started something which the previous governments didn't do. Lagos collaborated with Kebbi state and we had Lake rice. Individuals like Olam too were key players but they couldn't cope. Had this effort been sustained, by now a bag of rice would have dropped drastically. Its not rocket science but the government isn't just bothered cos their allies are those importing them. China shut their borders for years and today, they're about taking over the world. Its just like petrol. If more players can be licenced to own refineries, petrol price will drop further. You don't expect a policy established in order to end primordial rots to have an immediate effect and as our GDP keeps going down. Are you aware we now import palm oil? Its because the local industry can't cope and cost of production is so high. Only a few are players in the industry. The imported ones will always be cheaper because they have the resources and manpower to produce in large qty. No enabling environment, which is the government's major duty, to grow rice. Insecurity is also a major issue as many farmers had abandoned their lands. Benue isn't the food basket of the nation anymore. We used to have benue rice back then. An Asian.country came to Nigeria in the late 70s to learn of palm oil palpitations. Today, Nigeria imports palm oil from them due to very little efforts of the successive administrations (if there was any) in the sector. Awolowo initiated it but was jettisoned by successive leaders. Same applies to cotton and ground nut pyramids in the north. Buhari came and wanted to bring it back. He did his best but this administration isn't sustaining it. They abandoned it completely. How can we grow in such a manner? . Due to this, we will continue to grow rice locally at high prices cos we can't meet up with farmers in Thailand who have been there for ages and empowered by their successive leaders. We attach sentiments to everything in this country and this has to stop. When we talk agriculture today, give it to the north. They have vast lands to grow. You could drive 3 hours and you'd not see a single building on the northern terrain. Down south, we can grow cocoa, cassava, oil palm, rubber etc too as they were, in the past. What buhari did was laudable but not sustained by Tinubu. He should look into this else, price of local rice will keep soaring. See what buhari did in the oil sector. Today, petrol would have hit 2k a liter cos those importing them would have monopolised it and made more money. |

The fact is simple. Nigeria cannot compete with other nations when it comes to production. Government needs to subsidize cost of production like other nations are doing not giving out money to portfolio farmers. It'll take years of investment before we'll start to see results that'll be sustainabie. At the moment, the government cannot continue to allow its citizens go hungry because some farmers want leverage on farm production. A nation filled with hungry citizens is more dangerous than allowing inflow of fireign rice. It's a complex balancing act that needs intelligent approach. |

Tinubu removed petrol subsidy which led to increase in transportation cost and virtually every other thing in Nigeria by x4. Removed subsidy on tertiary education tuition fee for Nigerian students which led to increase in university school fees and he cunningly brought student loan, loan not grant. Tinubu brought Telecom tax, this pushed data price up. Tinubu wanted to implement bank tax but got paused. Tinubu devalued Naira and unified our exchange rate which jerked exchange rate up and led to quadruple increase in commodity prices in Nigeria. Tinubu removed subsidy on electricity tariffs and introduced band A, band B, C billing system which led to increase in electricity bill by x4. Tinubu is introducing new tax law that will force many struggling businesses to start paying huge tax from 2026. Tinubu has increased customs import clearing duty more than 3 times and now price of Tokunbo cars and other imported products are x 4 in price. Tinubu introduced new vehicle ownership style whereby every owner of vehicle in Nigeria now pay to FG every year to renew the ownership of their car. So every year you pay Tinubu to verify that your car is still your car not that you sold the car to a new owner. Tinubu is now introducing house insurance which will cause annual rent in Nigeria to increase by x2 so that people paying NGN2 million per flat in a year will not pay NGN3.5million to NGN4million and Una say this man called Tinubu should not be impeached before 2027? Nigerians continue playing na my tribes man, e go soon clear for una eyes shocked |

Eriokanmi:Are you aware late PMB restricted forex access to rice importers in 2015. In 2019, he banned tge importation of foreign rice through our land borders. This in total is almost a decade of policy to encourage local rice farmers to fill the gap and have an edge to compete against foreign counterparts. Where are the results from these policies. The results was hunger and astronomical increase in price of rice, whether imported or locally produced. The policy failed because we were subsidizing pockets of portfolio farmers instead of production cost associated with rice production. Remember what happened to our poultry industry when the last government removed maize importers from having access to forex. He claimed nigeria produced enough maize to cater for the poultry industry. That move caused a near collapse as poultry produce and like eggs, protein went through the roof. Egg went from 50 naira to as high as 200 naira and we're yet to recover from it |

| Re: Local Production: Rice Mills Collapsing by yemmit90: 12:41pm On Aug 23, 2025 |
DIVINEEVIDENCE:I understood how greedy they are, reason I said they should rather lower their price and compete with imported rice. However, you don't compare livestock with plantation of stable food like rice, maize, beans, etc Besides, animals too feed on plants produce by plantation farmers, so it logical to subsidise the plantation of these plants that will eventually bring down the cost of feeding our animals. Farming are mostly subsidise anywhere in the world, and the best way to do this in Nigeria is to provide the aforementioned items to them for ultimum cheap productions. |

Below is the cry from the association of rice farmers(evil farmers)...if they should be given the opportunity of total independent, they worst more than the oil cabal. He explained that the government contributed to the current problems facing the rice industry presently in the country over its selective policy by giving licences to only two mills, the Imota Rice Mill in Lagos and BUA to import brown rice into the country from India, whereas the rice they are bringing had expired long ago in India as a result of rice glut in that country. They threw Nigerians into rice agony all because of government helping and encouraging them for own local production...they turned cabal frustrating Nigerians. Una go sell those una mill plants to bababonla laslas. |

nero2face:You're blaming the wrong people The evil ones are the sycophants in APC who went to confuse Bubu that rice was surplus in Nigeria but people are not buying due to the presence of foreign rice. Even after the border was closed and there was outcry about its bad effect on prices of Staple goods, same sycophants went about town shouting 'border remains closed" as if those who wanted the borders opened hate Buhari and Nigeria. These sycophants never let our leaders hear the truth of issues. They down out the voices of genuine reasoning with their noise of praise claiming to be patriots. Look at them up there. Today they are blaming the millers who are simply victims of their sycophantic worship of politicians |
