great session
Thank you so much for this. I tried sending you a personal message via your email. I would like to confirm some information from you especially for Lincoln University, did you apply for any funding? Secondly, the dedicated agents; they shared one with me but he has not been responsive since 14th of July. How long did the whole process take for you? And the total amount too. I was a bit confused with the $60k, is it inclusive of the living expenses. How much is the annual tuition for PhD at Lincoln?

Apologies for the long questions. I look forward to your feedback.

I got an admission into the University of Waikato for a Masters degree program. However, the issue of tuition is a problem 45k dollars. Is there any scholarship schemes i could apply to or any advice at all.

The tuition fee for PhD at Lincoln is 8,550+ plus insurance and student fee is around 10,300+.

You can also explore the website of the school. The website is rich in information

Check the school website for scholarship and u can also write the department in which you are admitted if they have funding that you can benefit from.

Go through their website also

Funding is available, you can check on the school portal on it. Yeah there are school agents, send an email to your contact or the school requesting for agent covering your region. The 60kNZ$ is the all expected living expenses (excluding tuition). Annual tuition is around 11kNZD.

I would also recommend Licensed Immigration Advisers as a Nigerian, it may seem costly but much cheaper in the long run because they will legally guide all the way till visa is out. Speaking from experience.

CalabarSamurai:
1. I always say check the New Zealand immigration website, I have never seen a comprehensive website like theirs, it has the official information you are looking for, not personal opinions like mine that might no longer be valid at the current time.

2. Contact PhD supervisor/supervisors especially in your preferred PhD field, research on their work and see how it aligns with your proposed PhD thesis and to include that information in your email when contacting them. When they have accepted your proposal, contact the school for their admission processes, each school has their tuition fees and scholarships, if you qualify.

3. Work with a PAID LICENSED immigration adviser in New Zealand especially as you are a Nigerian (I am assuming), agents like IDP work only with the principal applicant.

Cheers!

Hello Guys,

Please I’m trying to apply for a PhD at the University of Auckland and was wondering if anyone here who has gone through this process can take a look at what I have down as a research proposal?

In most cases, PhD can resume in any month of the year.

Try to secure a supervisor first and you and your supervisor can agree on your resumption date

Please I would like to ask a question. Please about the POF we are going to use, is it advisable to be in my own account or my partner that want to apply for the PhD? Because we want to start to build the account now so it won’t delay us.

We are planning to apply together as couples

Hi everyone,

It’s been a while since I visited this thread.

Auckland is quite a busy place—I used to think Lagos was hectic until I arrived here. Lol.

If you're applying for a PhD, you need to be strategic and ensure your research interests align with New Zealand’s future goals.

If you're considering the master's route—which I personally find expensive—I’d recommend looking into a Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma. It’s more affordable, allows you to bring your partner, and grants you a three-year post-study work visa upon completion. Most PG diplomas cost about half the price of a master’s degree here in NZ.

Also, if you have a family and the financial capacity to support them, you can apply for your visa along with them—whether you're coming for a master's or a PhD. There's no law stating that only PhD students can bring dependents. However, you need to be very thorough with your application, especially your proof of funds and your statement of purpose.

Lastly, I’m happy to assist anyone seeking information about the admission process or visa application.

Please note: I will never ask you for money for any assistance.

My support will come in the form of guidance—not doing the work for you. Lol.

Wishing everyone aspiring to come to NZ all the best on your relocation journey.

Ngā mihi.

Great thread ! Thank you everyone contributing and giving us a sense of direction.

I would have loved to do a PhD but I have a unique case. I just got a 5 year ban from Canada this month.
*Can I apply to NZ (1st choice)or Australia?
* IF No, kindly suggest a good country please .
note: I am a family of 4 .

Thanks for your honest opinion

Hello everyone,

I've been receiving emails from Nairalanders regarding relocating to New Zealand via the study route.

Please note, I am not an immigration officer. Any information I provide is based on personal experience or the experiences of friends and colleagues.

If you're applying for a PhD at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), I can guide you from start to finish, including support with your visa application process. However, if you're applying to other universities, I may not be able to offer proper guidance, as AUT’s admission process differs from that of other universities in New Zealand.

Due to the numerous inquiries I've received over the past few days—which have been quite overwhelming given my schedule—I’ve decided to create a WhatsApp group strictly for those relocating to New Zealand via the study route. Please note, I do not offer advice on permanent residency or job sponsorship.

Also, I am not obligated to respond to inquiries based on your timeline, as I’m currently juggling work, study, and family commitments.

The reason for creating the WhatsApp group is that many of the questions I’ve received are similar, and I often find myself repeating the same information. The group will allow people to interact more effectively, share discoveries, and exchange experiences to support one another.

Please note: I am not asking anyone for financial favors in exchange for any information I provide. If such a request ever comes from my account, please assume it has been hacked (although realistically, my account is well secured).

I’ll be dropping the WhatsApp link soon for those interested in joining.

Nga mihi and God bless you.
