Compare your productivity to those countries and you will see why you can’t afford most things in Nigeria.

For example, An average South African worker has an annual output 8 times that of a Nigerian worker. Yet the Nigerian wants to be at par with him. You spend all your time in church. Night vigil etc.

Nigeria is the only country I know where it takes 4/5/6 people to do the job of 1 person. Nigeria is the only country I have been to where you employ someone all day to sit down and tear receipts at supermarket exits. When 6 people are doing the work of 1 person, those six people will share the wages of 1 person.

All international passports are standardized, the machines that print them are all the same from the same companies like Delarue. The cost of production is almost the same. Delarue is not going to give Nigeria a discount on its printing machines or security papers used for passports because it takes 4 Nigerian workers to do the job it takes only 1 person elsewhere.

The standard of living Nigerians moan about is a reflection of the poor level of productivity of a Nigerian worker. It takes 4-6 workers to perform the task of 1 worker elsewhere. Poor education, poor skills, poor work ethic, poor culture, low productivity. If you produce a product in Nigeria using 5 workers instead of 1 elsewhere, you can’t charge 5x the price because you have 5 workers or your products won’t sell. You are competing with countries who produce the same product with 1 worker….so the 5 workers will share the salary meant for 1 person elsewhere. That is why your standard of living is low!
The culture of unproductivity is well known. The solution lies in leadership BY EXAMPLE. But from the very top the system is built around rent seeking and contracting where value is compensations cannot justify value.

The other day a state government wanted equipment for it's hospitals. It had to award a contract for that when it can easily browse the net and buy directly from manufacturers.

I will not even go into billion naira contracts awarded to individuals, shady companies or so called foreign expatriate firms for jobs that can be executed by direct labour.

You cannot build a thriving economy if you cannot put your populace to work. And you cannot have the jobs to give them if your tendencies are towards resourcing to an ever smaller group or circle of people.

If government is able to create enterprises along the lines of value chains that serve our most pressing needs, boom, the country's economy will be reflated again and the work culture established.

The other day it was reported that Nigeria is the second largest African market for solar panels. That is a huge industrial potential for a productivity seeking government.

All the money wasted on useless contracts for this and that can been channeled into seeding a solar production complex for example.

Get those selling to us to partner, leverage on our industrial giants to partner and then when it is founded government divests to recover it's seed capital.

This is how to instill a culture of work, brick by brick. Invest in productivity, not supply and contracts, mercantilism and all other elements of this rent seeking economy.

If you need money for centralised control of issuance, why don't you take money from the purse of NIS or add it to the next Budget circle, why are you tasking us to death with increase in procurement of passport!

Its only a testament of the inflation we have been talking about. If within a year there is an enormous increase of over 150% one can estimate the price it will be in the next 2-4 years.

Everything about this country keep falling apart. The other day it’s custom and today immigration. These agencies are not supposed to be a revenue generating companies or organizations for the government. We started destroying the economy when we start making government agencies a revenue generating streams. There are other ways government funds their agencies. We should learn from other prosperous countries.
Police & FRSC have joined them as revenue generating forces with various Permits. So so sad.
Unfortunately no good alternative amongst our politicians. All noisemakers.

Thank you for your post. It is very rare to open one’s mentions and read a post based strictly on issues and anchored on intellectual foundations.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Unfortunately we have serious structural issues that can’t be overcome overnight.
For example we have a generation of workers that are largely miseducated, poorly skilled and largely unemployable. We have a generation of graduates who cannot get the jobs the certificates say they are qualified for not because the jobs don’t exist but because their degrees are no good.

On leadership, we also have structural issues where over time, the best have been discouraged from public service. I know what the civil service was in the 70s and 80s. The best went to work in the civil service. You graduated from Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge etc, you were heading for the civil service. The issue of Them being western programmed puppets is another matter but at least they were brilliant people. However in the late 80s and 90s, the even the best from our universities went abroad or to the private sector. The permanent secretaries and professors you see now are those who couldn’t get jobs in the private sector or abroad because they were not good or brilliant enough. The result is what is manifesting in all aspects of the country. Contrary to what many people think, a country is not run by politicians but by the civil service and can only be as good as the quality of the people manning the civil service.

On jobs, jobs should be a priority of the govt. Every govt policy or major expenditure should be assessed by how many jobs it generates. As for purchasing it always astounds me that govt prices are always higher. Govt is a bulk purchaser, govt suppliers should come with a significant discount…..that is how it is done elsewhere. For instance if the govt is buying 1000 cars in a year (it will know from the pre budget requests from various ministries and agencies) It should have a standard approved range of models and a negotiated price at a discount for the year. This is how it is done, this is how it used to be. The proviso ofcourse is that suppliers get paid on time. It is only in Nigeria that a suppliers supplies to govt at above the retail price. It is only in Nigeria that there is no standardization in government approved for use products. This is the role of the BPP, to negotiate prices with approved suppliers every year so there is a standard price for govt purchases for everything from cars to airconditioners to pencils.

I could go on as I know I have not touched in everything you mentioned but I am hungry and need my breakfast.

I will just end by saying the Nigerian worker needs reeducation and reskilling and the culture of entitlement and miracles enabled by pastors needs to be checked!

Ur desperation to leave Nigeria should never entertain any form of delay from passport.
So, if u can afford to pay 10million to secure visa, is it 100m that u won't pay?
Put sentiment aside...100k is not much compared to any country in d world.
An American passport costs over $140.
So make ur comparison...
I hope you understand economics and finance, and if you do, I hope you understand that $140 to an American in America working in America and earning in USD is what ₦1,000+ - ₦5,000 is to a Nigerian in Nigeria, working in Nigeria and earning in NGN.

Now which is more expensive?

Mr Minister, how much is national minimum wage?
You increase the passport fee from 35k to 100k,how much percentage increment is that?
But just to increase minimum wage from 30k to 70k,some f.oolisshh supporters of e.v.i.l here in this forum and beyond started shouting about inflation.
They said government supposed to crucify Joe Aejero for asking for a better minimum wage for the average workers.
But now, they won't come out to explain the concept of useless inflation on this one..oo!

You are getting it wrong. A citizen should not be saving towards an international passport. You save towards, a car, land, home ownership.

Things like passport and other documentation like birth certificate, your license etc should be thoughtless decisions that you don't save towards.

That's just the truth.

There was a thread yesterday that compared the minimum wages of different countries to their passport fee, of all the countries I went through, the percentage was less than 20% of minimum wage but Nigeria was over 140% of the the minimum wage.

Anybody earning 100k or less cannot own a passport unless someone assists them or they have little to no financial obligations in terms of rent, feeding and transportation to work.
I agree
Re: FG Defends Passport Price Hike To ₦100,000, ₦200,000 by Wallade(m): 10:43am On Aug 29, 2025
You will hardly see responsible, responsive and learned citizeds with reasonable economic power that would take up the Nigerian Immigration Service, Ministry of Interior and the Federal Government on this matter through litigation.

I did a research on the possible litigation and these are my findings:

Yes, citizens generally have the right to sue the federal government, but success in challenging a passport fee increase would depend on proving the increase was unlawful or arbitrary, such as if it violates a specific law, constitutional provision, or administrative procedure. The primary path to challenge such a decision would be through the Nigerian court system, likely involving a judicial review of the Minister of Interior's decision or an action against the Nigeria Immigration Service.
Factors for Success in a Lawsuit
Illegality:
You would need to show that the fee increase contravenes a specific law or regulation.
Violation of Procedure:
The government must follow proper procedures when changing fees. If they fail to do so, it could be grounds for a lawsuit.
Arbitrary and Capricious:
You might argue that the fee hike was made without a reasonable basis or proper justification, making it an arbitrary and capricious act.
Procedural Unfairness:
The process leading to the fee increase could be challenged if it lacked fairness or transparency.
How to Challenge a Fee Increase
1. Seek Legal Counsel:
An attorney specializing in administrative or constitutional law in Nigeria would be best positioned to advise on the viability of a lawsuit.
2. Gather Evidence:
You will need to collect all official documents, communications, and publications related to the fee increase, as well as the original fee schedule.
3. File a Suit in Court:
The lawsuit would likely be a form of judicial review, filed in the appropriate court to challenge the legality of the fee increase.
Considerations
Public Interest:
Courts sometimes consider the public interest when making decisions regarding government actions, but the primary focus remains on the legality and fairness of the decision.
Government's Justification:
The government's reasons for the increase will be considered. You would need to show why their justification is insufficient or unlawful.
In Summary
A lawsuit against the government is possible, but it must be based on a sound legal argument that the fee increase was implemented unlawfully or without proper justification. You should consult with a Nigerian legal expert to assess the strength of your potential case.

it is just a piece of paper at the end of the day, all these epistles won't help, I usually renew my passport whether i am traveling or not, but I don't anymore. My Passport is my first form of identity out there and it does travel virtually to many countries I haven't been to. You do things without deep thinking, as if you don't collect budgetary allocations. By January now more people would relocate to Benin Republic when you start implementing your new tax, just billing people not asking how they would pay and not be corrupt.
