Hamas Confirms Death Of Gaza Military Chief, Mohammad Sinwar After Israeli Strike

The Palestinian militant group, Hamas, has confirmed the death of its Gaza military commander, Mohammad Sinwar, months after Israel had claimed it killed him in an airstrike in May.

In a statement released through its media channels, Hamas shared photographs of Sinwar alongside other leaders, referring to them as “martyrs,” but offered no specific details about the circumstances of his death, according to Reuters.

Mohammad Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the group’s overall chief in Gaza, who co-orchestrated the October 7, 2023, cross-border assault on Israel.

Yahya was killed in combat by Israeli forces a year later. Following his brother’s death, Mohammad rose swiftly through the ranks to become Hamas’ top military figure in the enclave.

His death now sets the stage for his close ally, Izz al-Din Haddad — the commander in charge of Hamas operations in northern Gaza — to assume leadership of the group’s armed wing across the entire territory.

The development comes amid growing outrage over Israel’s prolonged military campaign in Gaza, which rights groups and activists worldwide continue to describe as “genocide” and “mass slaughter.”

While Israel insists its operations target Hamas infrastructure and fighters, the mounting civilian toll has fuelled international condemnation, with many accusing Tel Aviv of committing atrocities under the guise of self-defense.

Hamas, which has not disclosed when or how Sinwar died, has vowed to continue resistance despite the loss of several top commanders in the ongoing war.
