Embattled corps member Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, has petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what she described as an “unlawful and politically motivated” extension of her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

In the petition filed through her lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, Esq., Raye accused the NYSC of victimisation and abuse of power, alleging that she was deliberately targeted for publicly criticising some of the policies of the Tinubu-led administration.

The petition, which was also copied to the NYSC Director-General, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and other stakeholders, demanded an immediate reversal of the two-month extension and the issuance of her discharge certificate.

Quoting from the petition titled “Appeal Against the Unlawful Extension of the Service Year of Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye with State Code Number LA/24B/8325”, Effiong stated:

“Our Client duly presented herself for the April biometric monthly clearance on April 7, 2025. However, her Local Government Inspector (LGI), Ms. Veronica Abela, deliberately refused to screen her. This was not due to negligence, but in retaliation for exercising her constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of expression after she publicly criticised certain policies of the Tinubu administration.”

The petition further alleged that the Lagos State NYSC Coordinator had previously threatened Uguamaye with an extension, a warning which has now been carried out.

Effiong described the move as an abuse of power, a breach of the Constitution, and a violation of the NYSC Act. He warned that failure to address the matter could set a “dangerous precedent for democracy.”

The human rights lawyer urged President Tinubu to wade into the matter immediately, stressing that if no action is taken, his client may be forced to seek redress in court.
