From Wooden Benches To Mega Auditoriums: How Lagos Churches Changed With Time by eyesoflagos(op): 7:22am On Sep 07, 2025
When we think about Lagos church history, it’s clear that churches have always been more than just places of worship. They’ve been centers of community, music, education, and culture. But over the years, the look and feel of Nigerian churches — especially in Lagos — has transformed dramatically. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

From humble gatherings under palm trees and small halls with wooden benches to today’s glass-walled mega auditoriums seating thousands, the journey of Lagos worship style tells the story of Nigeria’s faith, growth, and ambition.
The Early Days: Small Gatherings and Wooden Benches

In the early 1900s, churches in Lagos were modest. Services were often held in school classrooms, mud buildings, or open spaces. Seating was basic — usually wooden benches or long planks. The atmosphere was simple, but the faith was strong.

These small gatherings often emphasized hymns, Bible readings, and close-knit fellowship. Everyone knew each other, and the church felt like family.
The Mid-Century Shift: Building for Community

By the 1950s and 1960s, churches began constructing more permanent buildings. Simple cement structures with corrugated iron roofs replaced mud walls. Pews replaced benches, and choirs grew in size.

Church became a place not just for worship, but also for weddings, naming ceremonies, and community meetings. Nigerian Christianity was becoming more structured, with denominations spreading across Lagos.
The 1980s & 1990s: The Rise of Modern Pentecostalism

The late 20th century saw the rise of Pentecostal churches, changing the Lagos worship style forever. Services became livelier — with more music, dancing, and testimonies.

Buildings started expanding too. Churches moved from small halls to larger auditoriums, equipped with microphones, instruments, and loudspeakers. The energy of worship spilled into the streets, and Lagos became known as a hub for passionate Christian gatherings.
The New Millennium: Mega Auditoriums Take Over

Today, Lagos is home to some of the largest church auditoriums in the world. Massive structures like Redemption Camp, Winners Chapel’s Faith Tabernacle, and others can seat tens of thousands of worshippers at once.

These buildings are architectural marvels — air-conditioned halls, giant LED screens, professional choirs, multiple services, and advanced sound systems. Worship has moved from intimate gatherings to full-scale productions.
What Changed — and What Stayed the Same

Changed:

Wooden benches gave way to cushioned seats.

Small choirs became full-blown orchestras.

Churches now stream services online, reaching audiences worldwide.

Stayed the Same:

The central role of faith and community.

Sunday as a sacred day of worship.

The passion Nigerians bring to praising God.

Final Thoughts

The story of Lagos church history is the story of Nigeria itself — humble beginnings, steady growth, and big dreams. From wooden benches to mega auditoriums, churches have evolved in style, but the heartbeat of worship has remained constant.

Whether in a small hall or a massive auditorium, one thing is certain: Nigerian Christianity continues to bring people together every Sunday, reminding us that faith isn’t defined by the size of a building, but by the spirit of the people inside.

Is poverty a virtue? No. If any organization can afford better things, by all means. Go ahead. Why seat in luxury at home, and on stools in God's house?
Can you compare the banks, roads and technologies we had then to now? No. Change is permanent.
If the congregation can't afford yet, let them also joyfully enjoy God and fellowship with what is affordable. Avoid carnality and unreasonable competition in all.

Big things have small beginnings.

Growth is certain. Cashing out is assured.

Omo I thank GOD for change…I remembered those days… children Sunday school classes were held behind the church auditorium under hot sun…. I nearly collapsed…

I had to beg my father that I want to stop going to church with my mom…

Inside the church only senior pastors sit on plastic chairs the rest sat on wooden chairs

Where is it in the Bible that there is a brand of Christianity called "Nigerian Christianity"?

If you say "faith isn’t defined by the size of a building, but by the spirit of the people inside", what is the product of all that in terms of good character?

Does the Bible mention anything about "the spirit of the people"?

If you do not know the Bible and what Christianity should represent in the world, why do you keep writing about it?

Or you think it should be part of your weekend entertainment news?

The church is good, we see the missionary schools and progressive nature of the church, preaching peace and tolerance. The church must empower it's people, flock as they say.

The transformation, while not bad, is not a reflection of the people's spiritual growth.
In fact, it seems to have achieved the opposite.

Is poverty a virtue? No. .
Neither is it a crime and indeed your own scripture can teach you better -

Matthew 6:24: "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

Mark 8:36: "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?"

Luke 12:15: Jesus tells the crowd, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions."

1 Timothy 6:10: "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."

Matthew 19:24: "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

But Boxer, we understand that your attitude to this matter will mirror your attitude to worshippng BAT. A man who Christ could never ever tolerate for one second if he was alive on Earth today.

You don't know what you are saying. The transformation simply means church works—at least, the people bringing their resources for the building of the church believe it works. So, let's leave it there.

The people are the church not the pew or the building. They can as well gather under a tree.

So if the people are the church, what's wrong with them building themselves?

By "Building themselves " are you referring to increment in numbers or getting closer to God?

Change for who?
Because as far as I am concerned, only the pastors are experiencing this magnificent transition from poor to wealthy. The members can't even afford those benches anymore

"Church works"?? Not Jesus Christ works?
Obviously, and this is the point I was making originally, it's a lot more about the church than about Christ.
It's more of how much you're in church and how much of church is in you - Nigerian Christianity.
Focusing on the material - mega buildings, expensive equipment and vehicles than place "heavy financial yoke" on members.
That is not the yoke of Christ.

John 3:27

No one receives anything except from what was given by God HIMSELF…

So if a pastor steals for himself the offerings meant for building the church, it's because God gave it to him? If a politician steals state funds, it's because God gave it to him? If a man forcefully takes another man's wife, it's because God gave it to him? If a man toils night and day to make it in life but still struggles till death, it's because God made it so? And not the politicians and evil men that are directly and indirectly stealing his rewards of labour?
2 key things necessary when reading the bible are understanding and revelation. Do not take the word of God out of context.

Church buildings are transforming, but are souls being won?

That's the big question

We should stop deceiving ourselves.

Christianity is all about winning souls and not transforming buildings or auditoriums

Two things are required when reading your Bible ur brain and understanding…

The armed robber that successfully carried out his operation was successful because GOD allowed it happen…

The yahoo boy that successfully defrauded people… God allowed it happen…

The evil politicians you see in power God allowed it … because there are obviously more competent and decent politicians but GOD made us understand that HIS ways are not the ways of man ….
I can give you biblical references to back up all my claims….

God allowed the Israelites to suffer from misrule several times in the Bible…

The man that toiled night and day and ended up dying poor didn’t find mercy in the sight of GOD …. God said I would bless whoever I want to bless….

Some people have been so brainwashed that even if a religious swindler steals their spouse, they'll say it's the will of God

We need our country to also change with time

we need other sectors to grow as well
transportation especially, we need bullet trains, underground stations, etc

we need good healthcare systems..
we need industries to boost employment

any society that only religion progresses
fails no matter what
it will breed poverty and hunger

let's all eschew tribalism in our political life just like we do when it comes to religion..
only then can we see results....

only then

Due to failure in several sectors of the country, scarcity of job, people go to church to pray for employment, the health system is not working, people still go to church to pray for healing, , the business environment is unhealthy, people still go to church for God's favor. In all these situations, people still donate , those that are overfed also pay Tithe .
