Snake Tomatoes Is Highly Underrated by RevenuesBoost(op):
Today, on our way to the market, Hubby, Baby Light, and I stopped by my parents' shop. It’s conveniently located along the highway, just a little before the market. The plan was to drop Baby Light off with my mum so I could move around the market more freely.

After shopping, we stopped again to pick up Baby Light and ended up staying a bit to gist. While we were chatting, Mum noticed the small quantity of fresh tomatoes I had bought and asked, “Will this be enough for you?”

I replied, “I’m going to mix it with Snake Tomatoes.”

Immediately, she gave me a disgusted look and said, “No o! Don’t mix it. It’ll spoil your stew.”

I laughed and asked, “Mum, have you even tried it before?”

Believe me, if you taste it, you’ll not just like it—you’ll love it!

It’s clear that Snake Tomatoes don’t get the praise they deserve. You won’t find them in our local market; you have to grow them yourself. Honestly, I had never even heard of them until last year when Hubby introduced them to me.

We don't get to eat it regularly as it isn't found in the market.

Each time hubby eats it, he keeps saying, "This is delicious!"

I never knew or heard about snake tomatoes until now...

What does it taste like. Normal tomatoes?

I will look out for it so as to try it one day!

To me, it tastes better than packaged tomato paste — it's the best-tasting tomatoes I've ever had.

It's also called, "Long Tomato"

Yes, my husband dislikes Groundnut oil.

He says that it gives him pimples and causes accumulation of fats in the blood.

Are you a Nigerian? Many of our "groundnut oil" are refined palm oil. E.g., mamador, golden penny, etc.

What of those that cannot afford the refined groundnut oil you just mentioned, they end up buying those roadside groundnut ragolis canned oil where pig fats are melted inside the oil.

I dont even know who brought the idea of making stew with groundnut oil sef....the best oil to make stew is palmoil.

Okay, but I don't think the Normal Nigerian are not used to these products.
They prefer buying those ones that's been measured, the ones they are used to and to say the truth, it start causing problems in their body systems at old age.

Op, are you from the northern or middlebelt region? Snake tomatoes were a thing way back in my teenage years in Kogi. Hardly would you find a home with perimeter fencing without snake tomatoes. In fact, you didn’t even have to plant it, that thing would always find its way crawling on your fence. My mom would always mix it with the conventional tomatoes before blending.

I don’t know why it’s not so popular, but it’s certainly not far from our sheeple behaviour and classism as a people. If the rich and affluent don’t eat it, then it’s not good.

There’s also the challenge of mismatch between our academia and the marketplace. There are studies dating as far back as 2005 confirming its rich nutritional composition (had to check Google), but as long as our owambe caterers in Lagos don’t use it, the average Nigerian won’t accept it.

Same reason why many northern foods are not accepted. It has to come from Lagos, like the overhyped amala that isn’t even among the top 5 favourite foods in other southwestern states (it's always been pounded yam). It just has to come from the Lagos elites and their owambe geng (who prioritise profit over nutrition), otherwise you’re eating trash.

I heard, saw and knew about it last year from my Husband and he taught me how to prepare it.

We aren't Northerners
He said he saw it in and tasted it in a village close to my village in Cross River State.
He is Yoruba, I'm a Cross Riverian.

The major problem is the fact that most of the products we call groundnut oil are actually overbleached palm oil. Groundnut was never part of the process. I always wonder why we allow people sell those roadside oil too. Consumer protection doesn't exist here. Way too many products with false, unknown labels out there.
