A tragic accident has claimed the life of 32-year-old Hauwau Abubakar, a mother of six, after her clothing got entangled in a rice milling machine in Tumu community, Akko Local Government Area, Gombe State.

The incident occurred on Sunday, September 7, 2025, and was confirmed in a statement by the spokesperson of the Gombe State Police Command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, on Monday. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
How the Accident Happened

According to the police, Hauwau had gone to purchase rice from a local miller when her clothing became trapped in the rotating belt of the milling machine. She was forcefully dragged into the equipment, sustaining a severe neck injury.

She was rushed to Cottage Hospital, Tumu, but was pronounced dead by a medical doctor. Her remains were later released to her family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Police Advisory on Safety

In his statement, DSP Abdullahi urged the public to prioritize safety when operating or visiting rice mills, grinding machines, and other mechanical equipment.

The Command highlighted key safety measures:

Keep a safe distance from moving belts and machines.

Avoid flowing garments or scarves that could get caught in equipment.

Restrict access—keep children and non-staff away from machines.

Install protective guards around belts, pulleys, and grinders.

Report unsafe practices to authorities immediately.

Condolences from Police Commissioner

The Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Yahaya, expressed condolences to Hauwau’s family and the Tumu community, describing the incident as a “painful and avoidable loss.”

He assured the public of the Command’s commitment to ensuring safety and preventing similar tragedies in the future.

The safety personnel did not do well, in most places you won't be allowed to even enter the machine room with such clothing.
