ANAMBRA SECURITY: POLICE RESTORE CALM IN ONITSHA MAIN MARKET AFTER DISTURBANCE

Extends an invitation to the management of the alleged local enforcement team to identify the suspects for prosecution

The Anambra State Police Command has restored calm in Onitsha Main Market following a distress call reporting that personnel of the Ocha Brigade, an Anambra State Environmental Law Enforcement outfit, allegedly engaged in an altercation with some traders, during which seven traders sustained gunshot injuries. The incident subsequently triggered unrest within the market.

Upon receipt of the report in the early hours of 9th September 2025, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, MNIPS, PhD, immediately deployed tactical teams and other security agencies led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, in company with the Area Commander Onitsha, the Divisional Police Officer Main Market, and the Commander of the Anti-Cultism Squad, to the scene.

The operatives swiftly addressed and calmed the traders, restoring order and dispersing them back to their shops and lawful businesses. The victims of the gunshots, identified as Mr. Ebuka Orakwe (M), Orum Oluebube (M), Anthony Kosisochukwu (M), Ifeoma Ezema (F), Chinwe Igwe (F, 22 years), and two others yet to be identified, were promptly evacuated to hospital.

Regrettably, one of the victims, Miss Chinwe Igwe, was confirmed dead on arrival. Her body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation. The other victims are currently receiving treatment and are responding positively.

Meanwhile, the Command has extended an invitation to the management of the alleged local enforcement team to identify the suspects for prosecution and notes that normalcy has since been restored in the area, while patrols and monitoring continue to ensure sustained peace.

The culprits should be apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.

Under the administration of His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), their will be no leniency for crime perpetrators.

Wishing the wounded a quick recovery and condolences to the slain woman.

Why should a ' local enforcement team ' carry firearms?

How about reporting the recalcitrant and uncooperative traders to the police?

Is high time Solodu shut down all these ramshackle markets in Onitsha that are known to hubs of illegal activities and consider building ultra modern mega shopping malls that will have both local govt and state officials managing security, environmental sanitation and most importantly collation of taxes, levies and revenue

The shops should not be sold to individuals but rather leased on stringent terms.

Only then will genuine business men occupy it and from there more people can then shop there

One benefit of this also is that it will vastly improve the landscape of Onitsha while getting rid of touts, unwholesome activities and create a scenic environment for business to thrive

Soludo is a failure. The funniest part is that he can't say anything or even sympathize with the victims or their family. Very useless man!

This is the reason I am averse to creation of state police, there will be escalation of extra judicial killings, impunity and rash gun use by operatives. State police isn't the answer to the level of criminality we have in Nigeria, the solution lies in good governance, equipping the existing security apparatus and motivating our security personnel. Having a security force under our governors is very risky

Re: Onitsha Main Market: Anambra Police React To The Killing Situation In The Market by Dogalmighty17: 12:19am On Sep 10, 2025
So, what I take from this is that Soludo is arming and equipping thugs all over Anambra state. What concerns keeping the environment clean that necessitates guns for the enforcers? The other day it was Soludo's thugs stripping a corp member naked. Just today, we are seeing pictures of an flyover in Ekwulobia he commissioned. A flyover that flies over nothing. Trucks can't pass underneath it. Yet they have suspension cables attached as decor.

Soludo is turning into an embarrassment.

The advantage of having state police is more than the disadvantages imagine a situation where a fulani president who are well known for abusing power refuse to give orders to eliminate fulani bandits that are disguising as herdsmen in a southern state but the governor of the state who has constitutional powers to order his commissioner of police to go after the killer fulani bandits won't waste any much time in giving the orders.
