Can You Do A Remote Job With Your Regular 9-5? by Hamachi(op): 6:57am On Sep 10, 2025
Imagine you already have a 9–5 office job that pays the bills but barely leaves room for savings or the lifestyle you want. Then, you land an opportunity for a remote side job—flexible hours, decent pay, and entirely online.

But here’s the catch:

If you accept, you’ll be working long hours, probably sacrificing rest, social life, and maybe even your health.

If you decline, you’re stuck with financial limitations, watching peers build wealth and skills through remote opportunities while you tread water.

Now the bigger moral controversy:
Some people argue it’s dishonest or even “unprofessional” to juggle two jobs at once—your employer expects full focus from 9–5.

Others say in today’s economy, where one salary is often not enough, it’s smart survival and even a form of empowerment.

So the dilemma becomes:
1. Should you stick to one job to preserve focus, balance, and employer loyalty?
2. Or should you double up, take the remote role, and push yourself harder—risking burnout but potentially securing financial freedom faster?

Burn out is real if your 9-5 already fully consumes your time. By fully consume, i mean, if you had to do a go job at work, you needed to give your full attention. So that leaves you with afterwork hours. Won't you rest? Except you're in a govt job that gives you plenty time, it's not advice able.

Absolutely, you're right — burnout is very real, especially when your 9-5 already takes your full mental and physical focus. If you’re doing your job well, chances are you're drained by the end of the day, and your body needs that time to rest and recharge.

However, in today’s Nigerian economy, rest often feels like a luxury. Things are tough — cost of living is high, inflation keeps rising, and for many, one income just doesn’t cut it anymore. So as much as it’s not ideal, a lot of people are finding ways to use their after-work hours for side hustles, freelancing, or small businesses.

It’s not always advisable health-wise, but for survival? Sometimes it’s the only option. The key is finding a balance that won’t break you. If you must do more, pace yourself, prioritize rest when you can, and try not to run on empty for too long. The hustle is real, but so is your health.

This question becomes even relevant for either the married or the unmarried.
If you're single, then I'd advice that you do both but for the married, better prioritize family time. The reverse could be the case

My humble opinion though

Yes, I did. I was teaching remotely while working as a classroom teacher in one of the biggest schools in my city. My saving grace was that the management were not that strict and I was able to meander my way through the 2 years I worked with the school. I taught my online students during my free periods. I resigned from the school after I had hit it big with two Chinese organisations I am working with currently.

I was a math teacher too 😆. If you are truly good then you are fit for the job. The job is called ESL ( you can make some research on Google). You need to be ESL certified by having any of the following certification, TEFL, CELTA, TESOL. The main purpose of the job is to teach Asian kids any of the subjects you are good at in English Language. You have to be very jovial and cheerful (one of the top criteria) and good pronunciation with a clear accent. They pay you per hour in $$. One of the organisations pay me every Monday while the other pays every 2 weeks ( 15th and month end).

truth is that i may not have the time to reply pms', however the first step to take is to get check online for any website where you can get the certifications, the next thing is to do an intro video ( one minute at most). To be honest it is not easy to get the job, it is just like applying for regular jobs with thousands doing same. You can join ESL groups on Facebook, you will see job adverts on a daily
