Resident Doctors Give FG Fresh 24-hour Ultimatum by nlfpmod(mod): 9:27am On Sep 11, 2025
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has issued the Federal Government a fresh 24-hour ultimatum to meet its outstanding demands, following the expiration of its earlier 10-day deadline on September 10.

The decision followed a six-hour meeting of the association’s National Executive Council, held virtually on Wednesday.

The President of NARD, Dr. Tope Osundara, said the association acknowledged the government’s promise to address their concerns but insisted on immediate action.

In a communiqué issued on September 1, 2025, and signed by NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara; General Secretary, Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku; and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Omoha Amobi, the doctors demanded immediate payment of the outstanding 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25–35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure review, and other long-standing salary backlogs.

They also demanded the payment of the 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears, prompt disbursement of specialist allowances, and restoration of the recognition of the West African postgraduate membership certificates by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

In addition, they called on the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria to issue membership certificates to all deserving candidates, implement the 2024 Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, resolve outstanding welfare issues in Kaduna State, and address the plight of resident doctors at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

Resident doctors form the backbone of Nigeria’s public health system, providing a large share of clinical services in federal and state hospitals. Any strike action by the association often paralyses healthcare delivery, leaving patients stranded and hospitals overstretched.

Speaking with our correspondent on Thursday, Dr. Osundara said, “The Federal Government called us yesterday (Wednesday) and promised to address our concerns.

After a six-hour deliberation, we decided to give the government the next 24 hours to ensure the disbursement of the Medical Residency Training Fund to beneficiaries, for the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to upgrade our membership certificates, and to attend to our other demands.

“If there is no payment by today (Thursday), then tomorrow (Friday), we will start the strike immediately.”

According to him, more than 2,000 resident doctors across the country are still awaiting payment of the MRTF.

Nobody's against calling on the government if you're displeased.

We pray the FG pays attention to our health practitioners...

The government should pay doctors equally as they are planning to do for the Super Falcons. There shouldn't be partial treatment of any arm or sector.
Re: Resident Doctors Give FG Fresh 24-hour Ultimatum by Ruke1991:
Doctors are very greedy. Always fighting against improved welfare for other professionals working in the hospital that are not doctors

Doctors ordered the govt to stop allowing pharmacists and other health professionals to become consultants in their respective fields and govt obeyed them for fear of strike threat. However, pharmacists, nurses, lab scientist do have become consultants in their own fields in the developed world

Doctors threatened the govt to withdraw a recent improved call allowance approved for other clinical professionals like pharmacy and radiology, the govt withdraw it for fear of the doctors

Doctors opposed increment of salary for nurses, pharmacist, radiology, etc in 2015, 2018 and 2023 by threatening counter strike if govt dare add N1 to their salaries

Entry level medical doctor salary = N400,000
Within 5 years they become consultants and earn at least N500,000. As consultants they only come to work once a week, work between 8am and 2pm and they go back to their private hospital practice. Someone who works 4;days a month will now earn between N500,000 monthly to N1.3m monthly (for senior consultants)

A nurse, pharmacy, lab scientist earns N160,000 at entry point. They will work 16 years before their take home can get to N350,000 which is far less than doctors starting point. They will commit not less than 8 hours daily to the job unlike doctors with just 5 years experience. After 30 years of experience before most non doctors can earn up to N400,000 monthly

Doctors have currently gotten approval from govt for a pool of fund to be made available only for doctors (excluding other hospital workers) who are sick to be flown abroad for treatment at govt expense.

An engineer or a non clinical staff who gets employed in a hospital setting earns N130,000 at the start and can never earn above N400,000 after 35 years of working because of the huge disparities in pay. Doctors fight everyday to wide this disparity by threatening counter strike whenever govt gives audience to the others

The MRTEF these doctors are going on strike for is not salary. Govt doesn't owe them salary. ARD are doctors in training who want to become consultants. MRTEF is school fees, exam fees for the Training, govt also pays them salaries. In some developed nations, if you want to be a consultant, you are responsible for your own training. But here, Govt decides to pay them salary, pay for the course and the fees, pay bicycles allowance, accounterment allowance, etc Yet, doctors continue to be a nuisance by opposing better welfare for non- doctors while threatening strikes monthly for their unending demand.

Mind you, govt has approved renewed hope houses scheme for doctors. They are applying through their union and did not make it open to other hospital workers.

You just woke up amd decided to be decorating this forum with lies.
There are consultants in other fields in Nigeria. Also initially the docs were worried cos most nigerians don't know the difference between consultants in specialties. For example, how will the average Nigerian differentiate a consultant hematologist who is a doctor and another consultant hematologist who is a lab scientist?
Also please show me where docs opposed call duty or salary for other HCP? Last I checked nurses and other HCP are getting increments. What docs are saying is that the government should follow a certain status quo while increasing salaries and not doing it randomly.
The entry point for fed doctors is around 250 to 300k and not 400k. Yes consultants come to work 2x weekly but so does upper level HCP. Matrons come to work once or twice weekly. So what's your point?
You also forgot that in UK,US,Canada, Australia the government pays salaries to doctors in training. Are they not working? They even work longer hours,so what's you point about all these lies?

This epistle is a tissue of lies from the usual quarters.
The current struggle between the resident doctors and FG has got nothing to do with other members of the health sectors .

Firstly, let me educate the unsuspecting public . NARD is a national body for Doctors undergoing specialist training in various teaching hospitals and federal medical centers across the country .
The resident Doctors are bedrock of these health facilities mentioned above and in fact overwhelming majority of the Doctors in these facilities are resident doctors .

Now to the fellow I quoted ,

1. The circular she was alluding to was actually meant to erode the pay relativity between Doctors and allied health workers .
Pray tell, is there any country in the world where Doctors earn the same with other members of the health sector .
If there is , I’d want you to tell us

2. Doctors never said other workers in the health sector shouldn’t earn more . Our position has been very consistent. The pay relativity must be maintained and not eroded

3. In terms of working hours, I dare say no one in the hospital be it Nurses, Lab scientists or Pharmacists outwork the Doctors .
When I started residency, I was the only junior member in my unit for 6 months and I barely left the hospital throughout this period .
While other workers run shifts, the average resident Doctor works nearly round the clock.
When you compare the hours put in, these people making noise about Doctors eventually earn more.

For example, a nurse would go on 4 days off after 4 days of night shift. ( A night shift is about 12 hours ). If you work for 48hours cumulatively, you get to stay away from work for 96 hours .
An average resident Doctor don’t even have this luxury .

3. She lied about entry level Doctors earning 400k . An entry level Doctor is the house officer and they earn just over 200k.
I’m a senior resident in a federal teaching hospital and my salary is barely over 400k. ( I’ve been practicing medicine for 8 years by the way ).
The junior resident Doctors who have spent ant least 2 years in training ( with at least 5 years experience under their belt ) earn about 390k .
So she should tell us where she heard the 400k being paid to entry level doctors.

4. It is very laughable to read that consultants come to work once or twice a week. Nothing could be further from the truth . The Consultants are responsible for training the residents. So how do they train their residents if they don’t go to work .
For instance, I’m a surgical resident and my unit’s weekly activity is as follow

Monday - MDT ( a meeting where multidisciplinary care of patients are discussed with other specialists - surgeons , radiologists , oncologists ).
Consultant ward rounds and minor operative procedures

Tuesday - clinic

Wednesday - Academic day for residents / Departmental meeting

Thursday- Major operative procedures

Friday - Endoscopic procedures

The above activities are carried out or supervised by the consultants.
So, I don’t understand the talk of consultants coming once a day or twice. It’s a blatant lie

5. Also, you talked about consultants earning 1.million monthly 😂😂😂
Very laughable. No consultant/ professor no matter your years of experience earn up to a million naira .
So find another lie

6. You came across as an unexposed Nigerian when you said in developed countries , the government don’t sponsor residency training . This is a very big fat lie .
They get paid while in training eg UK and US.
Perhaps, you are confusing resident Doctors with medical students 😂😂😂.

7. The so called housing scheme for Doctors is probably on paper like many things . Abi you want to show naira land where those houses are

On a final note, the current NARD strike enjoys overwhelming support of the members of the association and is in fact belated .
The strike has nothing to do with you guys . So stay out of it .

This superiority/ ego battle happening in Nigeria amongst health workers do not happen elsewhere because everyone understands their position.

So it means that with your new definition, nobody is recognized in his town or country. Even thieves, law breakers, teachers, lawyers, President, the poor and the rich because as you define recognition, you must not die in your country or village. So people who died in their villages and towns are not recognized according to your definition.

All I'll say is this: to be doctor no be beans o

No doctor should be paid less than 1 million naira a month. The stress they go thru is something else. Working like slaves. Doing the job of 10 people.

I see people talking about pharmacists and other related professionals.

Pls: in no world should u compare the work load of a doctor to that of a pharmacist, lab scientist or nurse.

😂😂😂😂.... So ur saying a pharmacist should earn same with a doctor?
