Such a fast rise in the army. Abeg how was promotions being done then? Based on what? This was the kind of army that gave rise to Buhari, Dimka, and many others. This is the man that has a hand in the events of July 28-31 1966 but refused to talk about it. Taraba state has no peace from his co-collaborators. The last picture seems to be around the Broad Street area of Lagos Island close to CMS bookshop. |

Racoon:What was even the population of the whole Armed forces then. I recall some of them joining the Army at 18, 19, 20 years. They were young and many of them became Generals before they were 40 years Old. Many of them also retired in their late 30s / early 40s as they reached the peak of their military career. Lucky Generation. |

Back then promotion is not exactly every 4 years ir 5 years as of today. Most officers back then go promotion twice in 2 years and sometimes once a task has been given to a particular officer, promotion comes with it. General IBB was promoted twice same year. I am glad everything has been regulated as of today in the army. No matter how brilliant the officer is, he will wait till date of promotion like his course mates Racoon: |

Racoon:Story. In 1963, Zik fooled everyone when he proposed we drop the Queen of England as our ceremonial HoS. This paved the way for Zik to transform himself from Governor-General to HoS. A tussle between the NPC and NCNC then arose as Zik had claimed that as HoS he had full powers over the Army. The constitutional crisis of 1964 was over a dispute within the ruling coalition on who was to control the army Seeing that the NPC was not backing down, Zik on his own decided to sack Tafa Belewa as PM to which Tafa responded by sacking him back. Ojukwu even approached Gowon during this period to support a coup he was planning to overthrow the government and install Azikiwe as a unitary civilian HoS dictator to which Gowon flatly refused and reported the matter to the the British Maj General that was heading the army. The General summoned both Gowon and Ojukwu and reminded ojukwu to whom he as an officer had sworn loyalty to the government of Tafa Belewa. A concession was later reached between the NPC and NCNC by allowing Zik nominate the successor to the outgoing British Maj General on the explicit condition that it will only be announced and made official by the PM. So all that nonsense talk of the Jan 15 coup plotters wanting to install Awo is all hogwash as Ojukwu had been planning to overthrow the govt in 1964 towards installing Azikiwe as civilian dictator under a unitary system. The coup plotters of Jan 15 wanted to install Zik but Zik got cold feet sensing the mood of the north and asked Ironsi whom he had ensured Orizu hand over power to , to hold on for him until nerves calmed. Zik remains the architect of Nigeria's failure. |

gidgiddy:Every information out there says he led the arrest of Ironsi but had nothing to do with his murder. He was displaced by the junior officers and soldiers who obviously had intents that were more deadly than whatever the senior officers had planned |
