Nigerian Bar Association Protests At Navy Dockyard In Lagos Over Rule Of Law by MisterGrace(op): 12:38pm On Sep 12, 2025

Tensions ran high today at the Nigerian Navy Dockyard as members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) staged a rare public protest. The demonstration was aimed at demanding accountability from government institutions, respect for the rule of law, and better protection of lawyers’ rights.

Why the Lawyers Took to the Streets

Led by senior members of the Bar, protesters marched to the Navy Dockyard in the early hours to present a list of grievances. Among their demands were:

Respect for Legal Practice – An end to what they described as intimidation of legal practitioners by security operatives.

End Arbitrary Arrests and Detentions – Immediate release of members allegedly detained without due process.

Oversight and Accountability – Investigations into alleged rights violations by police, naval, and paramilitary officers.

Rule of Law and Independence of the Bar – A call for lawyers to be allowed to operate without interference from political or security institutions.

Statement from NBA Lagos President

The protest was led by Uchenna Akingbade, the recently inaugurated President of the Lagos Branch of the NBA and notably the first woman to hold the position. Addressing journalists, she said the association was compelled to act because of repeated violations against lawyers in the line of duty.

“We cannot allow intimidation and disregard for due process to become normalized. Our demand is simple: uphold the rule of law and respect the independence of the Bar,” Akingbade stated.

Navy’s Response and Next Steps

While the protest was largely peaceful, eyewitnesses reported that naval authorities received the NBA’s petition but made no immediate commitments. The NBA leadership has vowed to continue pressing its demands until concrete actions are taken.

This marks one of the first large-scale lawyers protects on Lagos in recent memory, signaling what many believe could be a new direction for the association under Akingbade’s leadership.

What's the navy's business, don't they know the way to the government house or legislative quarters?

Good one. The government must be reminded that obedience to the rule of law is not a matter of choice; it is mandatory.

Lol... NBA is protesting.

Until a law is put in place to make convicted criminals share their sentencing with their lawyers, they will remain a major part of the problem.

Because I really don't understand how you'll defend someone because of money fully knowing they are guilty, wasting the court's time, and when they are convicted, you just walk away. Nothing to lose. That needs to be corrected. Lawyers need to start sharing a part of their client's burden.

My opinion though.

A matter of doing the right thing

The picture of the bent statue of Lady Justice is largely representative of the state of the Nigerian Judiciary. That picture is in the premises of the Headquarters of the State Judiciary in one of the South-West States of Nigeria. There is a substantive head of court and the State Judiciary who goes to work in the same premises daily!

Now lawyers are talking, how shameless they are. As if it is not the same lawyers that through their actions encourage the security agencies to undermine the rule of law. A thief will be caught red handed by the security with exhibit but one lawyer will come and start dragging the case until he finally frustrates everyone and the case is abandoned.

Why are these people fixated with protesting in Lagos?
According to the NBA spokeswoman (Uchenna Obi Akingbade) they are at the location to deliver a letter to the Navy. However, the Navy dock in Lagos refused to accept the letter because it does not have the authority to do

It’s common knowledge that official documents belonging to any organisation in Nigeria are handled by headquarters in Abuja. Attempting to deliver it to the Lagos dock is mischievous
