Did you figure what would happen borders remained closed and food prices rise?

Well, more people would go into farming for one because it becomes necessary and profitable. And just in case you don't know, apart from oil, it is the biggest employer of labour in our developing economy that has little industrialisation.

Instead of finding better ways of subsidizing production and tackling insecurity head on, your president is applying bandages upon bandages to a wound that's already festering by opting for short term import options.

I can boldly say that even though we have a large population and large market in Nigeria, our poor purchasing power strips away that advantage, thereby inhibiting industrial development (improved product quality) and making the country retarded and backwards.

Only big expatriate companies can afford to operate on a big scale and utilize the economy of scale to sell a low price points that Nigerians can afford and you won't have any Nigerian company giving them a run for their money because they are backed by stronger currency. This is all the way across Mtn, ShopRite, Nestlé, Olam, Presco, Dangote refinery. Even Tomato Jos is funded by VC.
Very valid.
Import isn't a sustainable way to keep agriculture cheap for everyone, but I must include the notorious nature of our middle men in Nigeria. Without a price control board, even if we have high yield, be sure to know it would still be expensive.

Nigeria farmers hoard market to create scarcity for increased profits.

When buhari government gave loan for local rice production, instead of selling to Nigerian market, they began to rebag it to foreign bags and selling to neighboring countries.

They ban the importation of frozen chicken from neighboring countries, chicken became 25k - 30k. Instead of making fair profit, they Farmers increased their price so highly and as per closed border, you are only at their mercy.

Never again.
You have just spoken my mind. Some of these unions think we all have been sleeping. What did they do when the policies were in their favour? They decided to suffer the masses and now they have the effrontery to complain?

There shouldn't be a price control board, FG to lax the rules especially on foods sold in Nigeria if it originates in Ecowas bloc. The result is abundance of food at much much lower prices. Econ 101

Nigeria’s food crisis is not about orders from Abuja but about structural dysfunction. To solve it:
1. Input Subsidies That Work – Instead of expired fertilisers, directly fund cooperatives of verified farmers with vouchers redeemable only at accredited agro-dealers.
2. Mechanisation Now, Not Announcements – Release and decentralise tractor distribution immediately through state-level farmer associations with strict usage audits.

3. Import Discipline – End indiscriminate duty-free imports that cripple local farmers. Imports should only be a buffer stock, not a permanent policy.
4. Farm-to-Market Infrastructure – Subsidise rural transport (rail & road) and cold chain logistics to cut middleman extortion and wastage.
5. Purchasing Power Boost – Tie food subsidy cards directly to vulnerable households, so demand exists for local produce and farmers can sell at viable prices.

Without input access, mechanisation, market discipline, and demand support, Nigeria will keep importing its hunger.
My bros hunger no hear grammar oh. FG has been releasing loans upon loans, fertilizer upon fertilizers, tractors, equipments for decades yet what was the result? Foreign rice was double the price of local ones but immediately the FG gave billions to Rice farmers through Anchor borrowers program which wasn't paid back, the farmers magically increased food prices by 300%. Are we even sufficient in any food production no. FG is still in the business of supporting farmers but i think the fraud and abuse going on in the Agric sector is worst than the oil sector before the removal of oil subsidy. I know obedients are mad because food prices are coming down for they would rather see Nigerians go through high food inflation to justify their hatred for the president. After all, one of them changed the color of naira suddenly in the wake of an election and put millions of people in suffering just to stop the same man from winning the election. They are ultimately happy to see millions of Nigeria perish just to say "We said so" than to see people happy. Farmer's Association should put their house in order and stop hoarding food to create artificial scarcity. It's even. I fully support the Government to flood the market with imported food each time food producers are hoarding food stuffs

How much was foreign rice in 2015 when minimum wage was 18k? How do these numbers compare with APC’s 57k rice with minimum wage at 70k?

Does that make us worse extreme poverty paupers or not huh
I am not aligned with any political parties in Nigeria, and it perplexes me when I witness the masses fervently debating party affiliations rather than focusing on individual merit. It was Buhari who afforded farmers the opportunity to bolster local production, yet how did they utilize this chance? What impact had it on us, the populace? You see how wicked we are towards ourselves, don't you?

Yea.
Have a great day ahead.
Because you accepted your mistake, I will give you a hint so that others can learn. Here it is:

The primary reason everyone makes money in Nigeria is a lack of power. Many people benefit from the lack of power, and this is the way to go. The next person to solve power in Nigeria will be extremely wealthy, but only for a short period of time. That is a topic for another day. So, while the issue of making money remains hidden to many, it is an open secret because it is not hidden at all.

Anyway, because we do not have enough power to preserve certain food categories, particularly fresh food, smart farmers capitalize on this. Look for 100 wealthy farmers, and 90 of them in Nigeria currently deal with fresh food.

Smart Farmers' Planting Schedule
As a smart farmer, you use your weather knowledge and the information provided above to your advantage. Have you ever noticed that fruits and vegetables have seasons when you see them at the market? What do you observe? They are extremely expensive when first released and as they fade away. With this knowledge, you should be able to determine when to cultivate so that your harvest coincides with a period of limited supply in the market. It is easily predictable in Nigeria. If any farmer wants to benefit from this, they should contact someone who understands smart farming planting schedules. When others buy fertilizers for N350k and make a profit of N5 million, a smart farmer will buy the same amount of fertilizer at the same price and make a profit of N35 million. That is seven times the average farmer's income. That is equivalent to seven years' worth of profit for unskilled farmers.

Wisdom and knowledge are excellent. Cap it off with understanding, and you will work in the same area as the poor, but you will be wealthy.

Ask why some farmers only go to the farm during certain times of the year to cultivate tomatoes. They only do tomatoes. And after, they are done. Others return each year to cash out. Why do you see a professor of agriculture in the fresh food market interacting with sellers and market fresh food associations, rather than in classrooms or laboratories, at certain times of year? Think about it.

Now, have a blessed day.

In my bones, there is dignity..."

I agree with you that the rot in the oil and gas sector has now shifted to the agricultural sector. But thats why we have a government, they should sanitize the agriculture system, they should brainstorm and bring out solutions that will get the grassroots, they should share redeemable vouchers instead of cash.
If not all the effort invested into the oil and gas system will just be a waste as the agricultural sector will loot all the money saved from oil and gas subsidy removal

If you see a disabled man ?
or a widow or widower who did not even work enough to receive a pension
You can give them cards to redeem food (only food grown and harvested inside Nigeria by local farmers). Each person has to given on NIN identification basis and only a certain quantity per week (Just enough to eat)
This helps in 2 ways-Prevents looting by state government of these funds, also boost local farmers, produce sales.
Local farmers in turn can trade these vouchers for subsidized fertilizers, seeds, tractor rentals etc

This is just rough algorithm...It can be fined tuned so that their is no leakage and the system runs itself, with minimal corruption or looting.

May Day: Hunger, unemployment, insecurity real— Tinubu

According to him: “The theme demands our collective attention and serves as a stark reminder of the need to create an environment where every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute to the growth and prosperity of our nation. As your President, I assure you that this administration is committed to creating such an environment for the common good.”

On the economic hardship, he noted that while it is a global phenomenon, its effects on Nigerians are particularly severe.

Tinubu said: “I am aware of the peculiarities of the economic hardship Nigerians face—rising living costs, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and the loss of livelihoods. These challenges are real and demand definitive solutions, which I am poised to address as your President.

I live in Kebbi, and this is exactly what they were doing: warehouses everywhere, creating artificial scarcity just to increase the prices of grains and other food items. Now that prices are down, most of them have no option but to count their losses and bring those items out. Beans I used to buy for 3,000 per plate are now 1,800–1,900; just a few days ago, I bought some in the market. Foreign rice that was almost 100,000 here is now 57,000. The same politicians making noise and complaining about high food prices due to government policies are the same ones complaining now that prices are coming down, causing farmers to suffer. grin grin grin
True... Very true

I don't know the cause, but I can confirm even in Lagos, the price of foodstuffs has crashed

If the logic is to compete with imports, then I wonder why Trump for example would renege on the Mexican agreement for Tomatoes.

You think its a joke. Continue until the money your president is using to import food and flood the market becomes so worthless that imported food also comes in at unaffordable prices.

Back in the day, we run to Contonou to buy tokunbo cars because they're cheaper. Now that the CFA is edging so close to the naira, our eyes are opening.

Point of correction CFA is 3 times more valuable than the Naira and this happened because bof bad APC policies like locking borders and imports banning, I believe in the doctrine of comparative advantage where every country should compete and find out what it's economic advantage over the other country is

At least we should give kudos to our govt when they do our positive wishes and knock them when they are in the negative.

All courtesy of President Tinubu,no other Nigerian President dead or alive, has ever done all of these.

Apart from the hardship (we can see that it is easing slowly) which happened because of the fuel and FX subsidies removal,President Tinubu has given more than any Nigerian previous govts within 2 years and I believe, just like other sane Nigerians, that he will do more.
He will surely win easily in 2027 now.

Coupled with massive ongoing infrastructural development, these are what he has given Nigerians in just 2 years...

NELFUND.

CONSUMER CREDIT SCHEME.

KIDNEY DIALYSIS almost free treatment.
(Haemodialysis is expensive, costing approximately N150,000:00 to N250,000:00 every month excluding Erythropoietin injections weekly)

Nigeria Technical institutions are free. They live in school free. They eat free food. They even collect #22,500 every month...so you think these students, their families, friends etc will allow you to vote out Tinubu because of your myopic views?
Dey play!

Old pensioners get free medical treatment in Nigeria.

Nigeria doesn't owe IMF shishi. Tinubu has paid all.

Nigeria has best tech city (Lagos) in the world 2025.
