Man Calls Out African Food Sellers In America Over Expensive Pounded Yam & Egusi by Rebuker(op): 12:45pm On Sep 16, 2025
A Nigerian man has taken to social media to vent his frustration, calling out African food sellers in America for what he described as “outrageous prices.” According to him, he was charged a staggering $140 for just two plates of Egusi soup and small portions of pounded yam.

Expressing his anger, he lamented that African food sellers deliberately inflate prices, especially when selling to fellow Nigerians. “Tell me why I have to pay $40 excluding tax and tips for a plate of Egusi and small pounded yam that can’t even fill me up? Other people sell theirs for less than $15, and you are charging $40,” he complained.

The man explained that during his visit to an African restaurant yesterday, he was billed $140 for two plates of Egusi and pounded yam. When he demanded a breakdown, he was told the actual price per plate was $40, with additional charges for tax and tips.

Shocked, he questioned the sellers: “$40 for a plate of food, not gold?”

Vowing to take action, he declared that he would start exposing Nigerian food vendors who charge above $20 per plate. He added that even the $20 price tag should only apply if the restaurant has a fancy setting and a prime location.

Still venting his frustration, he asked: “Are you people the only ones who need money? Don’t others need money too?”

He further explained that many Africans in America are not eating local dishes simply because they lack options, but because they genuinely want to support their own people and help African-owned businesses thrive.

Join the business and sell at a cheaper rate, if you believe that those sellers overprice their items.

I heard that even fruits are expensive there. So, why won't things imported all the way from Africa be expensive?

Do you know that any Japanese that enters Nigeria and finds out that 2007 model of Toyota Corolla goes for more than 3 million naira will complain that the price is outrageous? He will do so because the car is very cheap and becoming outdated in Japan. But that Japanese does not know the cost of bringing that almost-outdated model of car to Nigeria. It is easy for an African person to complain of the price of pounded yam in a Western country because that African is probably judging by the cost of the same pounded yam in Africa without knowing the cost of providing the same pounded yam in a Western country. So, join the business, pay rent and all the taxes in that country, export yam from Africa and tell us your own price.

It's an outrageous cost.

He doesn't need to go into the business to observe or even critique the fact.

Complaining won't solve the problem. Boycott the goods and the seller will reduce the prices.

Complain from now till eternity without boycotting the goods, the prices won't go down.

Going into the business or not patronising the overpriced items is the solution.

Go to Birmingham UK, the Irish plants 80% of African foodstuffs.
Same with America, go to Chile and see for yourself.

Don't be ignorant.

Those African food sellers too should take it easy, before they totally boycott their food, sending them out of business.
Taking advantage of people's cravings to exploit them is sabotaging yourself.

One who eats all at once does not know how to eat.

Some Nigerian vendors know Nigerians crave all these things; hence sell at exorbitant rates as if in Nigeria. U can observe this behaviour even in Nigeria. We are simply wicked to ourselves. Everything no be politician cause am.

Pondo yam is just $23. What is evn painful is that these restaurants are not selling natural pounded yam o. Its still the artificially processed Pondo yam they're selling, yet so expensive.

Enyin Americans, e pele o! 1 plate + egusi no suppose pass $20. WTF!!!

If Nigerians have their way, they would exploit you. They are another definition of market forces. Forget your knowledge of economics.
i hear even in Lagos airport, they will bill you (collect bribe) before you can carry anything Nigerian food in your own 23 abi 32 kg that you paid for.
