Nigeria President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu had debunked the FAKE NEWS making the rounds as far back as 2020 when some section of the media misquoted his statements on the proposed solutions to help stay afloat the challenges of COVID-19.

Of the nine recommendations, none suggested the printing of the naira.

The National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu has clarified that he did not call for the printing of new Naira notes in the message he released through his Tweeter handle.

Tinubu said yesterday that he used the platform to make known his thoughts should it become necessary for the government to act.

“Thankfully, we have not seen the worst of the virus but we must be bold and we must be prepared should the time for action ever arise.

He stated that he recommended the “main-taining (or expanding) present levels of government spending; (ii) focusing expenditure on public infrastructure and transportation (if the virus does not hit strongly) and health care (if it does); (iii) tax reduction and VAT suspension; (iv) food security; (v) lower interest rates; (vi) quantitative easing by the CBN to prop up the financial markets; (vii) exchange rate flexibility; (viii) debt suspension to support individuals and the private sector; and (ix) direct economic support for the poor.

“The core principle underpinning all of the above is that the federal government must adopt a countercyclical fiscal policy and should not be afraid to spend as much naira as is required to protect the economy.

“One thing I absolutely did not call for was the literal printing of new naira notes by the federal government. Such a suggestion is extremely far-fetched and has never been on my mind. It is unfortunate that my prescriptions
were so badly misunderstood and misreported,” he explained.

I was also shocked seeing the fake news being repeated on the frontpage. I could remember Tinubu immediately debunked the news a day after and all his recommendations to the FG was pointed out clearly.
Nairaland has the archives on its server and should have done its due diligence. Or is this a case of negligence of duty or a deliberate act of sabotage?

I knew Tinubu could not have suggested anything like that, he's more vast in the area of macroeconomics. No sensible individual would suggest printing more money in an economy where there was literally no productive activities during the Covid period. It'd only create a mess of inflation and exactly what happened when Emefiele kept printing more. In a bid to reverse the mess, the policy of naira redesign was introduced to mop up the excess liquidity, unfortunately, the implemtation was rather messier and left Nigerians in a more terrible situation.

I can remember PETER OBI AND ATIKU supported printing and redesign of New Notes.

I’m with the president, but printing more notes is correct, he did say so during Bihari’s time, I saw the news myself. Their reasons was to use it for home infrastructures.
